1.Sun and shade at the hours you would actually eat
Seating areas are usually placed where the sun is at midday and then found to be in shadow at the times people eat. Observe before deciding.
Go outside at the times you would realistically eat, not at midday, and note exactly which part of the garden is in sun and which is in shadow.
Evening and late afternoon shade patterns differ sharply from the middle of the day, and the difference decides whether a table gets used.
Write down what casts the shadow across your preferred spot, whether it is your own house, a boundary, a neighbouring building or a tree.
The source determines whether anything can be done about it, and whether the conversation involves a neighbour or an arborist.
Any reduction of a tree, including one on a neighbouring plot, must be assessed by a qualified arborist, and you should confirm locally whether any protection applies.
Repeat the observation in a cooler part of the year, since a lower sun angle can leave a summer-perfect spot in permanent shadow.

Planting alongside an eating area behaves differently from planting anywhere else, and the question is better asked before it is chosen.

4.Wind, rain and the question of cover
Shelter extends the season more than any other change, and it is also the element most likely to raise questions you must confirm locally.
Note where wind funnels through the garden, often between buildings or along a side passage, and whether your preferred table position sits in that line.
A funnelled draught can make an otherwise sunny position unusable, and it is easy to observe over a few breezy days.
Observe where water runs off the house, a gutter or an overhanging structure, and note whether it lands where people would be sitting.
Run off points are invisible in dry weather and obvious in wet, so the observation has to be made deliberately.
Decide and record whether you want the seating area to be usable in light rain, because that single answer determines whether cover is part of the scheme.
Stating this clearly changes the whole design conversation and stops cover being added as an afterthought.
Consider what an overhead structure against the house would do to the light in the room behind it, and check that from inside before committing.
Covered outdoor areas next to a rear window frequently darken the room more than owners expect.
Ask a qualified professional where water shed by any cover would go, and what that means for the surface and the ground below it.
A cover concentrates rainwater at its edges, which has to be dealt with rather than left to soak in beside the seating.

5.Cooking outdoors, heat and where the smoke goes
Cooking outdoors changes the position of the whole seating area. Treat every heat and clearance question as one for a professional or supplier.
Write down how you cook outdoors at present and how often, distinguishing between something portable and something you would want built in.
Built in cooking is a large commitment, and honest current behaviour is usually a more reliable guide than how you imagine using it.
Note which way smoke drifts in the usual wind, and whether that carries it towards your own doors, windows or a neighbouring property.
Smoke drift is a frequent source of complaint about outdoor cooking, and a few evenings of observation usually tell you more than a plan does.
Consider whether the person cooking would be facing away from everyone seated, and decide whether the arrangement should be changed so they are not.
Where the cook stands relative to the table is one of the most noticeable qualities of an outdoor cooking area.

6.Light, power and how the evening ends
Outdoor evenings are extended or ended by light and warmth. Plan the routes for both, and leave the electrical work to those qualified to do it.
Decide whether you want light on the table itself, on the route to it, or both, and record where each would come from.
Lighting the surface and lighting the approach are different jobs, and conflating them produces glare at the table.
Consider where any outdoor light would spill, including into your own bedrooms and towards neighbouring windows, and note the directions involved.
Light spill is easier to design out than to retrofit, and it is a frequent cause of neighbour friction.
Note whether you would want power near the seating area for anything at all, and ask a qualified electrician what providing for it would involve.
Even a single outdoor point changes what the area can be used for, but it must be planned rather than improvised.

Write down where you would want to switch outdoor lighting from, and whether that means from inside the house, from the table, or from both.
Switch position is decided early in electrical planning and is very awkward to change afterwards.

Heating changes how late the area is used, but every practical question about it belongs with people qualified to answer.

Note how sound carries from the seating position towards neighbouring properties, particularly in an enclosed backyard where walls reflect it.
Enclosed gardens can be much louder to neighbours than they feel from inside them.
Record what has to be brought in or covered at the end of an evening, and how far that is from where it is stored.
If packing up is tedious, the area gets used less often regardless of how well it is designed.
