When it is not sufficient
This is general planning preparation. These situations need a qualified professional, and often the relevant authority.
- Deciding how many devices may be supplied from any point, which a qualified electrical trade has to assess
- Establishing what runs inside a wall, floor or ceiling, which the relevant qualified trades must determine
- Judging whether an existing arrangement is suitable or safe, which only a qualified electrical trade can consider
- Setting out what testing or documentation applies, which follows the relevant local requirements and the trade carrying out the work

1.Counting what actually has to be plugged in
Almost every home working power problem starts with an undercount, so the list is worth making properly before anything is discussed.
List every item at the desk that needs a plug, including screens, a laptop supply, any docking station, a lamp, a phone charger and anything that appears only occasionally.
The count is the first thing anyone planning power will ask for, and owners almost always arrive with a lower number than reality.
Note the items that plug in only now and then, such as a printer, a fan or a vacuum, and record where each is plugged in at the moment.
Occasional items compete for the same outlets as permanent ones, which is why an apparently adequate arrangement keeps running short.
Record how many extension leads and adaptors are in use in this room, including any that are plugged into one another.
How many devices may be supplied from a given point, and whether an existing arrangement is suitable, is for a qualified electrical trade to assess.
Note anything in the room that draws heavily, such as a heater or a device with a motor, and mention it whenever power is discussed.
Whether the existing electrical arrangements can serve the equipment you intend to use has to be assessed by a qualified electrical trade.
Note what else in or near the room is plugged in around the same area, such as a television, a cleaning appliance or something the household uses daily.
Working equipment rarely has the room to itself, and the competition for outlets is easier to see once it is written down.
Consider what you may add later, and record it as a possibility rather than leaving it out of the conversation altogether.
It is far easier for a trade to allow for a stated possibility at planning stage than to return to a finished room.
2.Where power and switching already arrive here
The existing arrangement is the starting point for every conversation, and most owners have never written it down in one place.
Mark every socket, switch, isolator and data outlet in the room on a sketch, including any hidden behind furniture or inside a cupboard.
A sketch of what exists turns an open-ended discussion into a conversation about specific positions.
Note whether each outlet sits above or below working surface height, and which of them would become unreachable once furniture is in place.
Reachability rather than the number of outlets is what decides whether an arrangement works day to day.
Record which outlets are genuinely in use and by what, since some are usually blocked, forgotten or serving something nobody remembers.
An outlet that exists but is permanently behind a bookcase is not available to the plan.
Note where the consumer unit sits and whether anybody would have to reach it during a working day.
Anything to do with the consumer unit or fixed wiring is for a qualified electrical trade, and it should not be opened or altered by an owner.
Note where the light switches sit relative to the intended desk position, and whether the room light can be changed without crossing the room.
Switch position is normally settled at the same time as power, and it is the element most often left exactly as it was.
Ask a qualified electrical trade what else may be served by the same arrangements as this room, and write down what you are told.
How circuits are arranged in a home can only be established by a qualified electrical trade, and never inferred from which outlets stop working.
3.The journey a cable makes from desk to wall
Cabling is decided by the gap between the working surface and the nearest outlet, and that gap is a design problem rather than a tidying problem.
Note every cable that currently crosses a floor, a doorway or a walking route, and photograph the room as it is rather than after tidying it.
A photograph of the untidy version is the most honest description of the problem anyone can bring to a conversation.
Note roughly how far the intended desk sits from the nearest outlet, and whether that gap is crossed in the open or behind furniture.
The answer decides whether this is a cable management question or a question about moving where power arrives.
Decide whether cables should be concealed inside the desk, behind it, or left openly accessible, and record the choice before joinery is drawn.
Concealment has to be built in rather than added afterwards, and it changes how the surface itself is made.
Treat any idea of running a cable through a wall, a floor or a ceiling as a question for the relevant qualified trade rather than a small job.
Any cable route through building fabric is for the relevant qualified trades to assess and carry out, and what sits inside a wall must never be assumed.
Consider how the floor under and behind the desk would be cleaned, and whether anything has to be unplugged or moved before that is possible.
The area behind a desk becomes permanently inaccessible when cabling is planned without cleaning in mind.
Note where a cable would be pulled tight or bent sharply, such as behind a moving drawer, under a chair route or at the edge of a surface.
Cables strained by a moving part tend to fail in ways that get blamed on the equipment rather than on the layout.
4.How the connection behaves in this particular room
Connection quality is a property of the room and the household rather than of the equipment, and it is worth describing before anything is bought or run.
Record where the router or main connection point sits, which floor it is on and how far the working room is from it.
This single fact explains most home connection complaints and is the first thing anyone will ask about.
Note how the connection behaves in the working room at different points in the day, and whether it differs from other rooms in the home.
A pattern across the day points at household use, whereas a constant problem points at the room.
Ask what would be involved in bringing a wired connection to this room, and record the answer before deciding it is impractical.
Any data cabling through building fabric is for the relevant qualified trade to assess and carry out.
Note what else in the household uses the connection during your working hours, and whether calls become difficult when it does.
Household use is a far more common cause of poor calls than anything in the working room itself.
If any network equipment has to sit in the working room, note where it would go, whether it needs a permanent outlet and whether it hums or gives off warmth.
Equipment that has to stay powered and ventilated is easy to forget until there is nowhere sensible for it.
Ask your employer or client whether they have any requirement about how the home connection is used for work, and record the answer.
Requirements differ between organisations and occasionally decide whether a wired connection is worth pursuing.
5.Charging, docking and equipment that travels
Much of the clutter around a desk comes from things that move, because moving items rarely have a settled home for their supplies.
List what is charged overnight in this room and where each item sits while it charges, including anything belonging to the rest of the household.
Overnight charging occupies outlets and surface at exactly the hours nobody is watching, which is why it goes unplanned.
Note which devices move between rooms or leave the home, and where their supplies live when they are not in use.
Travelling equipment is the main source of cable clutter, because nothing in the set has a permanent place.
Consider whether you want a single connection to the working machine, and note everything that would have to run through it for that to work.
A one-cable arrangement is a real requirement with consequences for the equipment list, so it should be stated rather than hoped for.
Decide whether charging equipment should be visible, kept inside a drawer or moved elsewhere entirely, and note what each option would need.
Ask the equipment supplier or manufacturer what conditions their power supplies need, particularly if anything is to be enclosed in furniture.
Record where spare cables and power supplies are kept, and whether anyone else in the household borrows them without saying so.
A named home for spares removes a surprising amount of the daily searching around a desk.
Consider whether power is wanted at working surface level, and treat the way it would be provided as a matter for the relevant qualified trade.
How power is brought to a work surface, including any outlet built into furniture, is for a qualified electrical trade to specify and carry out.
6.What happens when power or connection drops
Interruptions are worth thinking about calmly in advance, because the middle of a working day is the worst moment to work out what depends on what.
Write down what stops working when power goes off in this room, and which of those things actually matters during a working day.
The list is usually shorter than expected, and knowing it prevents an overbuilt response to a small risk.
Note whether your work depends on being reachable during an interruption, and what you would realistically do instead if the room went quiet.
This shapes whether the answer is a technical one or simply a different place to sit for a while.
Record any occasion when something in the home interrupted the electrical supply, what was running at the time and how often it has happened.
Repeated tripping should be investigated by a qualified electrical trade rather than managed by unplugging things until it stops.
Note whether mobile signal in this room is usable as a fallback, and where in the home it tends to be better.
Knowing the better spot in advance turns an interruption into an inconvenience rather than a lost session.
Consider what light there would be at the desk if the room lost power during darker hours, and where a torch is actually kept.
This is the one part of an interruption that belongs to the room rather than to the equipment.
Agree with the household how you would be told about anything likely to interrupt power or connection, including work planned elsewhere in the building.
In a flat, planned interruptions to supply are usually notified by the building owner or manager, who should be asked how notice is given.
7.Preparing what a qualified trade will ask you for
The conversation about power moves much faster when an owner arrives with observations and an equipment list rather than a general wish for more sockets.
Bring the equipment list, the sketch of existing outlets and photographs of the current arrangement to the first conversation about power.
Those three things answer most of the opening questions and often remove the need for a second visit.
Describe what happens rather than what you think is wrong, including any outlet that feels warm, hums or holds a plug loosely.
Anything unusual at an outlet, switch or fitting should be reported to a qualified electrical trade and never opened or tested by an owner.
Gather any paperwork you hold about electrical work previously carried out in the home, and bring it to the conversation.
Earlier work explains the arrangement in front of you and saves time that would otherwise go into investigation.
Ask what is achievable in this room with least disturbance to decoration, and what would involve more, before deciding what to request.
Owners often ask for a position that is far more disruptive than one close by that would have suited almost as well.
Ask at what point in the work the power positions have to be settled, and record that against the rest of the plan.
Power positions are usually fixed earlier than owners expect, which is why late changes are so painful.
Ask who will provide a record of any electrical work carried out, and keep whatever documentation you are given with the home records.
Testing, documentation and record keeping for electrical work are matters for the qualified trade carrying it out and the relevant local requirements.

- Occasional equipment such as a printer or vacuum competing for the same outlets
- Outlets that exist but sit permanently behind furniture and cannot be reached
- How the floor behind the desk would ever be cleaned once cabling is in place
- Overnight charging, which occupies outlets at the hours nobody is watching
- Network equipment that needs a permanent outlet and somewhere to give off warmth
- The light switch position, which is usually left exactly as it was found

- Nothing here states how much equipment any outlet or arrangement can serve; that is entirely a matter for a qualified electrical trade to assess on site.
- Owners should observe and describe electrical arrangements, never open, test or alter them, and anything unusual belongs with a qualified trade immediately.
- What runs inside a wall, floor or ceiling cannot be assumed from the outside, so cable routes through building fabric are questions and not decisions.
