1.The front door and the first surface it faces
Everything a hall has to do begins in the moment the door opens, usually with both hands already full.
Open the front door fully, mark the floor it sweeps, and treat everything inside that arc as unavailable.
In a narrow hall the door arc frequently accounts for most of the free floor, and it is rarely drawn.
Write down what the door would strike if it opened fully, such as a radiator, a newel post or a handle, and whether it is already stopped short.
A door that cannot open fully changes how everything else in the hall has to be arranged.
Record what happens to the mat when the door opens, and whether it rides up, moves or has to be straightened regularly.
Mat behaviour is a daily irritation that gets solved at the design stage or lived with permanently.
Any recessed mat arrangement affects the floor construction, so what is possible here is for the relevant trade to advise on.
Watch where keys, post and a bag are put down within reach of the door, and record whether that place is a surface or the floor.
If there is no surface, the floor becomes one, and the hall never looks clear however much storage is added.
Record whether cold air is felt in the hall when the door is used, and which rooms off the hall notice it as well.
Comfort in a small hall shapes whether it can hold anything more than circulation, such as a seat or a workspace.
Consider what can be seen through any glazing in or beside the front door, and whether that affects what may be left in the hall.
Visible storage in a glazed entrance is a security and privacy question rather than a tidiness one.
Security arrangements for an entrance should be discussed with a suitably qualified professional rather than assumed.
2.Wet coats, outdoor shoes and the overflow they create
Halls are given the wettest, dirtiest and bulkiest clothing in the home and almost never the space to deal with it.
Count the coats actually hanging in the hall at present and note how many belong to the household and how many are visiting.
A counted number turns a vague wish for coat storage into something a joiner can design to.
Look at where wet coats and umbrellas currently drip, and whether anything beneath them has been damaged by it.
Wet outdoor clothing needs air around it, which enclosed hall storage usually removes.
Separate the shoes worn most days from those stored, and note how many pairs are genuinely in circulation at the door.
Only the shoes in circulation need to be at the entrance, and the rest can be stored elsewhere entirely.
Consider whether anyone needs to sit down to put shoes on, and note where they do it at the moment.
A perch changes what the hall has to provide and is often the reason a bench appears where storage was planned.
List what appears in the hall in colder or wetter conditions and disappears again, since storage sized for the quiet season overflows in the busy one.
Hall storage is judged on its worst day, not its average one, and the worst day is predictable.
Record the things children leave in the hall, such as bags, boots and sports equipment, and whether they can reach their own hooks.
Storage placed out of a child reach transfers the tidying to an adult and quietly stops being used.
3.The most walked strip of floor in the home
A hall is crossed more often than any other space and is expected to hold things at the same time.
Describe the busiest moment of the day in the hall, including how many people are in it and what each is carrying.
The busiest moment is the honest test of a hall, and it is what a designer should be given rather than an average day.
Walk the hall carrying shopping in both hands and note where you have to turn sideways or set something down.
The two handed walk finds the pinch points that an unobstructed walk forgives entirely.
Note in rough terms how much depth one side of the hall could give up before passing becomes awkward, and mark it with tape to test it.
Tape on the floor answers this in a way no plan can, and it can be left in place while normal life continues.
Decide whether storage should occupy one side of the hall only, and record which side and why.
Storage on both sides of a narrow hall rarely works, and choosing the side early prevents an unusable arrangement.
Identify the largest things that regularly pass through the hall, such as a pushchair, a bicycle or laundry baskets.
The largest regular item sets the clear width the hall has to keep, whatever else is planned.
Watch what happens where the hall meets the stairs, and whether people gather there or simply pass through.
The junction with the stairs is usually the tightest part of a hall and the place storage most often should not go.
What has to be kept clear on an escape route or near a staircase is for a qualified professional and the local authority to determine.
4.Doors off the hall and the swings that meet
A small hall is defined less by its walls than by the number of doors trying to open into it.
Count the doors opening onto the hall and mark on a sketch which way each one swings.
The sketch usually shows immediately why the hall has less usable wall than it appears to.
Mark any two doors that could strike each other, and record whether that actually happens in daily use.
Colliding swings are a permanent nuisance that hall storage will make worse if it is not accounted for.
Measure roughly the wall left between doors and note which of those pieces is long enough to be useful for anything.
Short pieces of wall between doors are where hall storage either fits or does not, and they are easy to check now.
Record which internal doors are usually left standing open, since an open door takes wall rather than floor.
An open door parked against a wall rules out that wall as firmly as any piece of furniture would.
Work out which single door, if it opened the other way, would release the most usable wall, then ask what changing it would involve here.
Naming the one door worth changing turns a vague wish into a specific question a professional can answer.
Altering a door, its frame or its opening is for a qualified professional to assess before it is planned.
5.Light in a space that may have no window of its own
Many halls are lit entirely by borrowed daylight, and hall storage tends to take that borrowing away.
Trace where daylight reaches the hall from, including glazing in the door, a fanlight, a landing window or an open room door.
Knowing the source shows immediately what a proposed piece of storage would block.
Stand in the hall in the middle of an overcast day and record whether the light has to be switched on then.
A hall that already needs artificial light in daytime will need more of it once storage lines a wall.
Record where the light switches are and whether any of them sit on a wall you are considering covering with joinery.
Switch positions are easy to overlook in a hall drawing and awkward to resolve once units are made.
A switch or socket cannot be moved on the strength of a drawing, and only a qualified electrician should assess it.
Consider how much of the light the hall has would be absorbed by a dark finish on a long run of joinery.
In a hall with borrowed light, the finish of the largest surface has a disproportionate effect.
Note whether a mirror is wanted, where it would sit and what it would reflect from the front door position.
A mirror in a hall is worth placing deliberately rather than hanging on whichever wall is left over.
6.Wear, marks and the surfaces that take the punishment
The hall takes grit, water and shoulder height contact that no other part of the home receives.
Look at where the walls are already marked, and at what height, since that shows exactly where people and bags make contact.
Existing marks are free evidence of how the hall is used, and they are usually more accurate than memory.
Follow where the floor shows most wear, and consider whether that path matches the route you thought people took.
The worn path is the real route, and any storage plan has to leave it alone.
Ask the supplier how a proposed floor or wall finish handles grit, water and repeated cleaning in an entrance.
Entrance conditions are harsher than the rest of the home, and finishes behave differently there.
Only the maker or supplier of a finish can say how it copes with grit, water and repeated cleaning in an entrance.
Find the corners that are knocked most often, and consider whether anything projecting into the hall would suffer the same way.
A projecting corner in a busy hall becomes damaged quickly, so it is better identified before joinery is drawn.
Consider whether the floor under any proposed storage could be cleaned, or whether grit would collect underneath it.
Hall storage that cannot be cleaned under collects exactly the material a hall generates most of.
7.The utility items a hall has to hide and still reach
Halls often carry the equipment the rest of the home depends on, and none of it can simply be built over.
List everything in the hall that belongs to the building rather than the household, including meters, an alarm panel, a consumer unit or a stopcock.
This list decides which walls are genuinely available for storage before any design begins.
How much room has to stay clear in front of meters and electrical equipment is for the relevant qualified trade to state.
Record how often each item is actually reached and by whom, including anyone who may need access without being let in first.
Frequency and who needs it changes whether an item can sit behind a door or must stay open.
Record whether the hall cupboard also holds a boiler, a meter or the vacuum cleaner, since it is rarely as free as it looks.
The hall cupboard is usually counted as storage in a plan and is usually already occupied.
Whether anything may be stored around a boiler or similar equipment must be confirmed with the relevant qualified trade.
Ask a qualified professional before any of these items are enclosed or covered, and record what you are told rather than deciding it yourself.
This is the point at which hall projects most often go wrong, and it is easily avoided by asking first.
Mark the position of any smoke or heat alarm in the hall, and confirm locally what applies before anything is planned near it.
Alarm positions are decided by others and are not something a storage layout should be allowed to shift.
Alarm positions and anything to do with getting out of the home safely are set by qualified professionals and the relevant local authority.
Write down which walls are ruled out by these items so the joiner is not asked to draw something that cannot be built.
A clear statement of what is unavailable saves an entire round of drawings in a small hall.

Having these to hand usually makes the first conversation shorter and more useful.
- A sketch of the hall showing every door and the way each one swings
- Photographs looking along the hall in both directions, including the stair junction
- A note of where meters, alarm equipment, the stopcock and any boiler sit
- A count of the coats, bags and pairs of shoes the hall currently holds
- Notes on where wall marks and floor wear already appear
- A note of which internal doors have already been rehung or altered, if you know

- How much depth the hall can give up while still working as a route
- Whether coats and shoes are stored open or behind doors

- The short pieces of wall between doors, which are the only usable ones
- Grit collecting under storage that cannot be cleaned beneath
- Whether children can reach the hooks intended for their own things
What this checklist does not do
- A hall is often part of the way out of a home, and nothing on that subject should be settled by a storage plan or by this checklist.
- Meters, consumer units, stopcocks and boilers cannot be enclosed on the strength of a storage plan, and the relevant qualified trade must be asked first.
- How a floor or wall finish behaves in an entrance should be confirmed with the supplier, since conditions there are harsher than elsewhere in the home.
- This checklist records how a hall is used and prepares questions about it, and it does not settle widths, clearances or what may be altered.
