This is general planning preparation. These situations need a qualified professional, and often the relevant authority.

1.Counting what draws power in the room today
An electrician can plan around a list. This section is about producing one that includes the awkward and occasional things, not just the obvious appliances.
Walk the room and list everything currently plugged in, including the things behind appliances and the ones you had forgotten were connected at all.
Most owners are surprised by their own list, and it is the forgotten items that end up sharing an extension lead afterwards.
Record where extension leads or adaptors are in use today, and what each one is powering, because those are the places the existing arrangement has already failed.
An extension lead is a written record of a missing outlet, and it points straight at the position that needs attention.
Note the appliances that only appear for particular occasions or seasonal meals, since they still need somewhere to plug in when they do.
Occasional machines are the ones left off requirement lists, and they are usually the bulkiest and most awkward to accommodate.
Separate the items that stay permanently connected from the ones that are plugged in only while in use, and mark which is which on your list.
The distinction matters because permanently connected items may sit behind cabinetry while portable ones need reachable outlets.
Identify the corners of the room where several machines cluster together, and note how many things you have ever had running there at once.
Clusters are where demand concentrates, and describing them honestly gives an electrician something concrete to plan around.
Note which appliances you cannot unplug without pulling the machine out, and whether that has ever stopped you dealing with a problem quickly.
How an appliance should be isolated, and by what means, is a matter for a suitably qualified electrician to determine for your installation.
2.Where switches are reached from in daily use
Switch position is decided by how people move, not by where it looks neat. Recording the habit is more useful than proposing a position.
Note what you are usually carrying when you walk into the kitchen, and which hand is free to reach for a switch at that moment.
A switch placed where nobody has a free hand gets bypassed, and people leave lights on instead of using it.
Record any switch you currently have to reach across an appliance, a worktop or an open door to operate, and describe the stretch involved.
Where a switch or outlet may be positioned relative to appliances and water is a question for a suitably qualified electrician working to local requirements.
Note which switches you operate in the dark or half asleep, and whether you find them by feel or by memory of where the wall meets a door frame.
Switches found by feel need consistency more than they need elegance, and moving them without thought leaves people groping at a blank wall.
Record whether anyone in the household struggles to reach or operate an existing control, and pass that on as an observation for professional advice.
Adapting controls for someone who finds them difficult should be discussed with a qualified professional who can advise for the individual and the property.
Note where an appliance control or switch currently sits behind the machine it serves, and whether you have ever needed it in a hurry.
Controls sealed behind the appliance they serve are a common outcome of fitted cabinetry, and they are easy to raise before units are ordered.
List any switch in the kitchen that controls something in another room, or vice versa, since those relationships are easily lost during a refit.
Cross-room switching is rarely documented, and it disappears silently when a kitchen is stripped out.
3.Outlets that disappear behind cabinetry
A refit moves the walls of a room without moving the walls. Things that are reachable today can vanish once units are in place.
Photograph every outlet, switch and connection point in the room before anything is stripped out, with something in shot that shows where it sits on the wall.
Photographs taken before demolition answer questions later that nobody thought to ask at the time, and taking them needs nothing but a phone.
Mark on your sketch which existing outlets would fall behind a proposed run of units, and raise each one as a question rather than assuming it can simply be abandoned.
What happens to an existing outlet that ends up behind cabinetry must be decided by a suitably qualified electrician, not left to the fitter or the owner.
Note any position where you want power inside a cupboard, a larder unit or an appliance housing, and describe what will live there.
Concealed power has to be planned in advance because it affects how the unit is built as well as how it is wired.
Record whether you expect to plug anything in at an island, a peninsula or a breakfast bar, and treat how power would reach it as an open question.
Getting power to a freestanding island depends on the floor construction and must be assessed by suitably qualified professionals for your property.
Note where you hope to have an unbroken splashback or wall finish, since that is usually the same stretch where outlets are wanted.
The tension between a clean wall and usable power is a real trade-off, and naming it early lets both sides be considered together.
Record whether a table or seating area in the kitchen ever has something plugged in at it, and how the cable currently gets there.
Cables trailing to a table are a familiar sight, and they usually mean an outlet was never considered for that part of the room.
4.How the lighting gets switched
Lighting control is where most kitchen electrical regret is concentrated, because the switching is decided last and lived with longest.
Note every doorway or route by which people enter the kitchen, including from a garden or utility area, and whether light can be turned on from each of them.
Rooms with more than one entrance need switching thought through, and this is straightforward to raise before wiring is planned.
Record which areas of light you would want to control separately, such as the working surfaces, the eating area and anything decorative.
Grouping is a decision you can make now, and revisiting it once the ceiling is finished is a far larger undertaking.
Describe how you want the room to feel late in the evening compared with when someone is actively cooking, and record the difference in your own words.
A designer or electrician can work with a described mood, but only if it is written down rather than assumed to be obvious.
Note where you currently work in your own shadow, and which surfaces are darkest when the main light is on and you are standing at them.
Shadow problems are the most common lighting complaint in kitchens, and they come from position rather than from the fitting itself.
Decide and record whether you want simple manual switching or something more involved, and note who else has to be able to operate it.
Systems that only one member of the household understands become a source of daily friction, and this is worth settling early.
Note whether any kitchen lighting is currently switched from a hallway, a landing or an open-plan living area, and whether you want that to continue.
In open-plan arrangements the boundary of what counts as kitchen lighting is genuinely unclear, and it should be discussed rather than assumed.
5.Isolation and shutting things off quickly
The moment you need to turn something off is never a convenient one. These prompts are about recording what is currently reachable.
Note where the consumer unit or fuse board is, how you reach it, and whether anything in the proposed kitchen would block the route to it.
Access requirements for a consumer unit and how it should be reached are matters for a suitably qualified electrician to confirm for your property.
Record which appliances currently have a control you can reach without moving the machine, and which do not.
This is an observation an owner can make easily, and it gives an electrician a clear picture of what the existing arrangement lacks.
Note whether the existing circuits are labelled in any way you can understand, and photograph the labelling if there is any.
Existing labelling, even if outdated, is useful context, and it is often destroyed during a refit before anyone reads it.
Ask what labelling and documentation you will be given at the end of the work, so you are not left guessing which control serves which appliance.
What documentation must accompany electrical work varies by location and is for a suitably qualified electrician to confirm and provide.
Record anything that must not lose power during the works, such as a freezer or equipment someone in the household depends on.
Arrangements for keeping any equipment powered during works, particularly anything health related, must be agreed in advance with qualified professionals.
Note whether anything outdoors is fed from the kitchen, such as a garden supply or an outbuilding, and flag it before the room is stripped.
Outdoor feeds routed through a kitchen are easy to sever unknowingly, and identifying them beforehand avoids a great deal of disruption.
6.Charging, data and the non-cooking uses
Kitchens have quietly become the room where everything is charged, watched and worked on. That belongs in the requirements too.
Record where phones, tablets and headphones are currently charged in the kitchen, and whether the cable crosses a worktop that gets wet.
Charging habits are established long before a refit and rarely change afterwards, so they should be designed for rather than ignored.
Note which device you actually follow recipes on, where it is propped, and whether it needs power while it is being used there.
The recipe device position is one of the most-used spots in a modern kitchen and almost never appears on a requirements list.
Record whether anyone regularly works, studies or takes calls in the kitchen, and what they need plugged in when they do.
A kitchen table doubling as a desk changes both the power and the lighting conversation, and it is easy to leave unsaid.
Note whether any network or communications equipment sits in or passes through the kitchen, and photograph it before anything is disturbed.
Cabinets and routers tucked into a kitchen cupboard are regularly discovered mid-strip-out, when options are already limited.
Record which of your appliances expect a network connection, and add a question about what they need to your list rather than assuming it is arranged.
Connected appliances vary widely in what they require, and the manufacturer documentation is the place that answer comes from.
Note whether any future charging need, such as for a vehicle or garden equipment, might be fed from this part of the property.
Any additional charging provision depends on the existing installation and local requirements, and must be assessed by a suitably qualified electrician.
7.Preparing what the electrician will ask for
This section is about assembling the material rather than proposing a solution, so the first conversation is spent on decisions rather than discovery.
Bring a sketch of the room with your appliance positions, working areas and problem spots marked, and label it as your requirements rather than a proposal.
The distinction matters, because a sketch that reads as an instruction invites argument while a sketch that reads as needs invites advice.
Hand over the manufacturer documentation for the appliances you are keeping or have chosen, rather than describing them from memory.
Electricians work from what the manufacturer states, and a paraphrase from an owner introduces errors that are hard to trace later.
Ask what the existing installation allows and what would need to change to support the kitchen you are describing, and record the answer in their words.
Only a suitably qualified electrician can assess an existing installation and say what it supports; nothing an owner observes substitutes for that.
Ask at what point outlet and switch positions have to be final, and what changing your mind after that point would involve.
First fix is a fixed decision point in most kitchen projects, and knowing where it falls prevents rushed choices being made under pressure.
Agree how positions will be marked on site before anything is fixed, and whether you will be able to see them marked out and comment.
Seeing positions marked on the actual wall reveals problems that no drawing makes obvious, and asking for it takes only a sentence.
Ask who is responsible for coordinating between the kitchen fitter and the electrician, and record the answer in writing.
The gap between trades is where outlet positions go wrong, and naming the coordinator in advance closes it.

Having these to hand usually makes the first conversation shorter and more useful.
- Photographs of every existing outlet, switch and connection point taken before anything is stripped out
- Manufacturer documentation for the appliances you are keeping or have already chosen
- Your sketch of the room marked with appliance positions, working areas and problem spots
- A written list of everything currently plugged in, separated into permanent and portable items
- Photographs of any existing circuit labelling at the consumer unit before it is altered
- Any electrical paperwork you already hold for the property, however old it appears to be
Records
Decisions to record before work begins
Write these down in your own words, with the date, so everyone is working from the same version.
- Which positions you want power at, described by what will be used there rather than by counts
- Which lighting areas you want controlled separately from one another
- Whether an unbroken wall finish or reachable power matters more in each stretch of the room
- Where charging and device use should be accommodated rather than improvised
- Whether an island or peninsula needs power, recorded as a question to be assessed
- Who is responsible for coordinating between the kitchen fitter and the electrician
