Limits
When it is not sufficient
This is general planning preparation. These situations need a qualified professional, and often the relevant authority.
- Deciding which material is suitable for your use, which should be established with the supplier and fabricator
- Determining what any surface can tolerate in terms of heat, staining or impact, which comes from the manufacturer
- Deciding how thick or how high the finished surface should be, which is agreed between you, the designer and the fabricator
- Specifying support for heavy surfaces or long overhangs, which is a matter for the fabricator and installer
- Confirming what is acceptable around a hob or sink, which must come from the appliance and surface manufacturers

1.How the surface is treated in this household
Suppliers can only advise usefully if they know how the surface will be used. Describe the household honestly rather than aspirationally.
Note whether hot pans and trays are routinely set straight down on the surface, and whether trivets are genuinely used or simply owned.
Heat handling differs enormously between materials, and an honest description avoids choosing a surface that the household will not respect.
What any surface tolerates in the way of heat must be confirmed with the manufacturer and supplier for the specific product.
Record whether anyone cuts directly on the worktop, and how many boards are actually in use during a normal meal.
Cutting habits are hard to change after the fact, so the surface should be chosen with them in mind rather than against them.
List what routinely gets spilled in your kitchen, such as oil, wine, turmeric, beetroot, coffee or strongly coloured sauces.
Staining behaviour varies by material and by finish, and a supplier can only advise if they know what the surface will meet.
Note which cleaning products you currently use on kitchen surfaces, and ask whether they would be acceptable on the options you are considering.
Some cleaning routines have to change with the surface, and it is fairer to know that before choosing than after.
Ask the surface manufacturer which cleaning products are acceptable, since using the wrong one can affect the finish.
Consider who else uses the kitchen, including children and visitors, and whether the surface will realistically be treated carefully by everyone.
A surface that depends on careful treatment behaves differently in a busy household than in a careful one.
Note how much standing water tends to gather around the sink and whether the surface there is wiped promptly or left.
The area around the sink is wet for more of the day than any other part of the run, and how your household treats it is entirely observable in advance.
2.Seeing samples in the room they are meant for
Surfaces look different in a showroom from how they look at home. Handle samples in the actual room before deciding anything.
Ask for the largest sample the supplier can provide, since a small piece rarely shows how a pattern or a variation reads across a run.
Patterned and veined materials can look entirely different at full size, and a piece judged from a small offcut is one of the more frequent causes of disappointment on delivery.
Look at each sample in the room at several points of the day, and again after dark under whatever light the room will actually be used with.
Surface colour shifts noticeably between daylight and artificial light, and both matter because the kitchen is used in each.
Hold the surface samples against the cabinet door, flooring and wall samples together rather than judging any of them separately.
Materials are chosen in combination and read very differently when seen side by side rather than in sequence.
Ask the supplier whether you may mark, wet or wipe a sample, and if permitted, see how it behaves with something you actually spill.
A sample test on your own terms is more informative than any general description of a material's behaviour.
Ask how much variation is normal between the sample and the delivered material, and whether the final piece can be viewed before it is cut.
Natural materials vary by their nature, and knowing the expected range prevents a dispute later.
Note how each finish feels under the hand and how visible fingerprints, dust and water marks are on it.
Finish affects daily satisfaction as much as colour does, and it is only assessable by touching a real sample.
3.Templating, joints and where a seam will fall
Joints are decided by the fabricator but they are lived with by you. Raise them before the template is taken, not afterwards.
Ask where any joints are expected to fall in your layout, and ask to see them marked on a drawing before fabrication.
A joint in the middle of the main preparation surface is a different proposition from one tucked at the end of a run.
Ask how a joint in the material you are considering typically appears once made, and whether you may see an existing example.
Joint appearance varies between materials and fabricators, and expectations should be set before ordering.
Ask what has to be finished and present in the room before a template can be taken, and write the list down.
Templating usually requires the cabinetry in place and certain appliances on site, and a missing item stops the visit.
The conditions required for templating are set by the fabricator; confirm the list with them rather than relying on a general expectation.
Point out to the fabricator any wall you know to be bowed, leaning or out of square, and ask how it will be dealt with.
Fabricators can scribe to an irregular wall, but only if they are told about it while they are still measuring.
Ask what can and cannot be changed after templating, and agree in writing how any change would be handled.
Templating usually locks the design, and the moment at which that happens should be explicit to both sides.
Ask how the finished pieces will be brought into the room, and point out any tight turn, stair or narrow doorway on the route.
Large rigid pieces cannot be flexed around a turn, and access sometimes dictates where a joint has to be.
4.Edges, overhangs and where the surface meets the wall
The edge detail is small on a drawing and constant in daily life. Decide it deliberately rather than accepting a default.
Decide and record the edge profile you want, and consider how it feels when leaning against it and how easy it is to wipe.
The edge is touched constantly, so comfort and cleaning matter at least as much as appearance.
Ask what apparent thickness is achievable in the material you are considering and how that is formed.
Apparent thickness is often built up rather than solid, and the method affects both appearance and the joint detail.
If you want an overhang for seating, ask what support it would need and raise it before the layout is finalised.
Support arrangements affect legroom and appearance, and retrofitting support is rarely satisfactory.
How far a surface may overhang and what support it requires must be determined by the fabricator and installer for the specific material.
Note any exposed corner that people will walk past, and ask whether it can be softened or rounded.
Sharp exposed corners at the end of a run are a persistent nuisance in a busy circulation route.
Decide whether the junction with the wall is to be an upstand in the same material, a tiled surface or something else, and record why.
This junction determines how easily the back of the worktop is cleaned and how the wall finish is terminated.
Ask who seals the junctions between the surface, the wall and any splashback, and what maintenance that sealing will need.
Sealed junctions are a shared responsibility that frequently falls between the fabricator and the fitter.
5.Cut outs for sink, hob and anything set into the surface
Cut outs are permanent. Every item to be set into the surface has to be known and available before fabrication begins.
List everything that will be set into the surface, including sink, hob, tap, soap dispenser, waste opening and any socket module.
A single forgotten item means either a compromise or a new piece, so the list has to be complete before fabrication.
Ask which of those items must physically be on site before templating or fabrication can proceed.
Fabricators often need the actual sink and hob rather than the published information, and this affects ordering order.
Confirm with the fabricator which items must be present, since requirements differ between materials and workshops.
Note that the way the sink is mounted affects which surfaces are possible, and raise the two decisions together rather than separately.
Undermounted and inset arrangements place different demands on the surface, and deciding one in isolation limits the other.
If you want grooves or a drainer formed in the surface, ask whether the material allows it and how it performs in practice.
Formed drainers are attractive and behave differently between materials, so the question belongs with the fabricator.
Ask what the appliance manufacturer requires around a hob cut out and whether the surface you are considering satisfies it.
Requirements around a hob come from the appliance and surface manufacturers together, and they are not interchangeable.
Requirements around a hob cut out must be confirmed with the appliance manufacturer, the surface supplier and a qualified installer.
Note any socket or module to be set into the surface and raise it early, since it involves both the fabricator and an electrical professional.
Coordination between two trades on a single cut out is a frequent source of delay when it is discovered late.
Ask the fabricator and a qualified electrical professional together how a module set into the surface would be provided for, rather than assuming either can arrange it alone.
6.Maintenance, damage and what happens afterwards
Every surface needs something of its owner. Understanding what that is before choosing is far more useful than discovering it once the kitchen is in daily use.
Ask what routine care each option needs, how often, and whether it is something you would realistically keep doing.
A surface requiring regular attention is fine if the household will do it and disappointing if it will not.
Ask what happens if the surface is chipped, scratched, burned or stained, and whether repair is possible and how visible it would be.
Repairability varies widely and is rarely discussed at the point of choosing, yet it shapes long term satisfaction.
Ask who would carry out a repair, whether the fabricator offers it, and what would be needed to arrange it.
Knowing the route to a repair before it is needed removes a great deal of frustration later.
Ask what the warranty covers, what conditions attach to it, and what use would fall outside it.
Warranty conditions often describe expected use, which is itself useful information about the material.
Consider what replacing a single damaged piece would involve, particularly if the material is naturally variable.
Matching a replacement piece to an existing run is difficult with variable materials, which is worth knowing in advance.
7.What must be settled before the template is taken
Worktop decisions sit in the middle of a sequence. Knowing what has to come first prevents an avoidable pause in the work.
Ask the supplier and the fitter in what order the sink, hob, cabinetry and surface decisions have to be made.
The order is not obvious and differs between suppliers, so it is worth asking rather than assuming.
Ask what normally happens between templating and fitting, so that the interval can be planned for rather than discovered part way through.
There is usually an interval between template and fitting, and the kitchen is only partly usable while it lasts.
Ask what the household can and cannot use during the gap, and agree what temporary arrangement is acceptable.
Knowing whether water and cooking are available during that period is the practical question owners most often forget.
Agree in writing who is responsible for measuring, fabricating, delivering, fitting and sealing the surface.
These responsibilities are frequently split between parties, and gaps between them are where problems appear.
Ask at what point you are asked to confirm the drawing, and make sure you understand what is fixed at that moment.
A confirmation point is the moment after which changes become difficult, and treating it as such avoids late requests that cannot be accommodated.

Documents and information to gather
Having these to hand usually makes the first conversation shorter and more useful.
- Samples of every surface option you are considering, in the largest size the supplier can provide
- Samples of the cabinet doors, flooring and wall finishes to view alongside the surface options
- Manufacturer information for the sink, tap and hob that will be set into the surface
- The kitchen drawing showing runs, corners and where any overhang or seating is proposed
- Written care and cleaning information for each surface option under consideration
- Notes on which walls in the room are visibly bowed, leaning or out of square
Records
Decisions to record before work begins
Write these down in your own words, with the date, so everyone is working from the same version.
- How the household actually treats a work surface, described honestly rather than aspirationally
- Which surface options remain on the shortlist and what each is being judged against
- The edge profile and apparent thickness you want, and the reason for the choice

Bring these to the relevant qualified professional, supplier or authority. Requirements vary by project and location.
- Given how we have described our use of the kitchen, which of these options would you be cautious about?
- Where would the joints fall in this layout, and can you mark them on a drawing before fabrication?
- What has to be finished and present in the room before you can take a template?
- What support would an overhang of the size we are discussing require in this material?
- What does the appliance manufacturer require around the hob cut out, and does this surface satisfy it?
- What happens if this surface is chipped, burned or stained, and who would carry out a repair?
- How much variation should we expect between the sample and the material actually delivered?
- What is the sequence from decision to fitting, and what can we use in the kitchen during it?
Blind spots
Commonly overlooked items
- A joint falling across the main preparation surface because nobody asked where joints would go
- The sink mounting decision, which quietly limits which surfaces remain available
- Sockets or modules set into the surface, needing both a fabricator and an electrical professional
- The gap between templating and fitting, during which the kitchen is only partly usable
- Sealing at the wall junction, a responsibility that often falls between two trades
- How visible fingerprints and water marks are on a chosen finish, which only a sample reveals
- Access for large rigid pieces, which sometimes dictates where a joint has to be placed
What this checklist does not do
- This checklist does not state what any surface material can tolerate. Heat, staining, impact and cleaning behaviour must come from the manufacturer.
- Support for heavy surfaces and long overhangs is a matter for the fabricator and installer, and nothing here should be treated as a specification.
- Requirements around hob and sink cut outs come from the appliance and surface manufacturers together and must be confirmed by a qualified installer.
- Anything electrical set into a work surface must be specified and installed by a qualified electrical professional.
