1.Describing how you actually cook and work
A worktop is chosen for a household, not for a room. These prompts describe the household honestly.
Describe what you put down straight from the hob or oven and where you put it, since direct heat contact is one of the most common causes of worktop damage.
Almost every household has one landing spot beside the hob, and that spot decides how the surface will look over time.
Note whether you cut directly on the surface, or would want to, and ask what that does to each of the shortlisted materials.
Honesty here matters more than intention, because the habit rarely changes once the new surface is in.
Say how much of the surface stays permanently covered by appliances, jars, boards and utensil pots, because that changes how much of the finish is actually seen.
A material chosen for its appearance can end up largely hidden, which is worth knowing before the decision is finalised.
Note where you genuinely prepare food, which is usually a small area between the sink and the hob rather than the whole run.
Identifying the working zone focuses the durability conversation on the part of the surface that matters most.
Describe how the surface gets cleaned at the end of cooking and which product you would instinctively reach for.
The product already in the cupboard is the one that will be used, so its compatibility is a real question rather than a theoretical one.
Mention who else uses this kitchen, including children, visitors and anyone who is unlikely to follow rules about hot pans and cutting boards.
A surface that only works when everyone is careful is a poor choice for a busy household.
2.Sink, tap and drainage decisions the material drives
Water is where worktops most often fail, and the sink decision is inseparable from the material decision.
Decide whether the sink sits on top of the surface, is set flush into it, or is fitted beneath it, and ask which of those options each material allows.
Mounting method is one of the first questions a fabricator asks, and it rules some materials in or out immediately.
Find out what happens at the cut edge around an undermounted sink, since that edge is exposed to water continuously and is where problems often begin.
The exposed cut edge is the least protected part of many surfaces and is hidden from view until it fails.
Decide whether you want drainer grooves cut into the surface, and ask what that means for water standing on the material.
Grooves are convenient but they hold water in contact with the surface for longer, which suits some materials more than others.
Note the tap position and whether it needs a hole through the material, and whether a filter tap, boiling tap or soap dispenser adds further openings.
Each opening is a cut, and cuts affect both the fabrication and where the surface is most vulnerable.
Discuss with the supplier how the material behaves where water stands, such as immediately beside the sink and behind the tap where drips collect.
Behind the tap is the area owners see least and clean least, and it is where marking usually starts.
Ask a qualified professional what the sink and tap arrangement requires of the surface and the cabinet beneath it before the material is ordered.
Support, sealing and plumbing arrangements all interact, and they are settled much more easily before fabrication.

3.Heat sources and what sits near the surface
Heat reaches a worktop in more ways than through a pan. These prompts cover all of them.
Note whether the hob sits on the surface, is set flush into it, or stands as a separate appliance, since the cut and the material choice both change with it.
Flush installation demands more of both the material and the fabrication than a hob dropped into a simple opening.
Ask what clearances the appliance manufacturer and the installer require around the hob, and confirm them with the installer rather than assuming from a drawing.

Note where an oven, dishwasher or washing machine vents heat and steam towards the underside or the edge of the surface.

The cut edge exposes the core of many surfaces, and heat reaches it directly during cooking.
Consider whether you want a heat-tolerant area built into the layout, and ask which of your options can provide one.
A deliberate landing area beside the hob solves the problem that damages most worktops.
Check what this material does with a sudden change of temperature rather than with sustained warmth, since the two behave quite differently.
Thermal shock and general heat tolerance are separate properties, and a supplier answering one may not be answering the other.
4.Joins, seams and where the surface has to break
Joins are decided by material size and by layout, and they are far easier to discuss before ordering than afterwards.
Ask where joins would fall in your layout and mark them on a rough plan, rather than discovering their position when the surface arrives.
A join in the middle of the preparation area is a very different proposition from one tucked into a corner.
Find out what a join looks like in each material, whether it can be made close to invisible, and what sits between the two pieces.
Some joins are barely detectable and others are a permanent line, and owners react very differently to each.
Ask the fabricator why a proposed join is placed where it is, since joins are often positioned near corners or cutouts for reasons worth understanding.
Understanding the reason lets you weigh a different position rather than simply accepting or rejecting the proposal.
Check whether the length of your longest run exceeds what this material can be supplied in, and what that would mean for the number of joins.
Supply size is a hard constraint that quietly shapes the appearance of an entire kitchen.
Find out how a join behaves over time, including whether it can collect water, discolour or open slightly with movement in the units beneath.
Joins are the parts of a worktop most likely to change appearance, particularly near a sink.
Ask what happens where the worktop meets a wall that is not straight, and how that gap would be closed.
Older walls are rarely straight, and the chosen solution affects both the appearance and the cleaning.
5.Edges, overhangs and what holds them up
The edge is the part of a worktop people touch, lean on and read the thickness from.
Decide what edge shape you want and ask which edge treatments this material can actually be worked to.
Edge options differ considerably between materials, and the choice affects both appearance and how the edge wears.
Note where the surface is intended to overhang for seating and ask what would support it beneath, without assuming an overhang is achievable.
Overhangs are one of the most common late disappointments in kitchen planning.
Whether an overhang or unsupported span is achievable must be established by a qualified professional and the fabricator, not assumed.
Consider what happens at the exposed end of a run, since the end is where the thickness and the construction of the material are read.
Return ends and exposed ends are often forgotten in drawings and then improvised on site.
Consider whether an upstand, a separate splashback or a continued surface is wanted behind the worktop, and in which material.
This decision affects the tiling, the fixings and the point at which the wall finish stops.
Ask whether a thicker appearance is achieved by the material itself or by an applied edge, and whether the joint in an applied edge is visible.
Built-up edges are common and perfectly acceptable, but only when the owner knows that is what they are getting.
Note where the worktop meets a tall unit, a fridge housing or an appliance, and ask how that junction is finished.
These junctions are where gaps appear, and they are usually resolved on site unless they are raised earlier.
6.Measurement, access and what cannot change afterwards
Worktop fabrication follows a strict order of events. Knowing that order prevents a run of late and awkward surprises.
Establish at what point in the work the surface is measured, and what must already be in place and fixed before that measurement can happen.
Measurement is a fixed point in the sequence, and everything that has to precede it needs to be understood early.
Ask what access the material needs to reach the room, including door openings, staircases, turns and floor protection, and describe the route honestly.
Large rigid pieces cannot always reach the kitchen, and the constraint sometimes changes the layout or the join positions.
Ask who is responsible if the delivered piece does not fit the space, and record the answer in writing before ordering.
Responsibility for measurement varies between suppliers, and the distinction only becomes visible when something goes wrong.

Check whether the cabinets have to be level and permanently fixed before the surface is measured, and who confirms that they are.

Sink position, tap holes and hob placement typically stop being adjustable at this point.
7.Marking, repair and sourcing the material again
How a worktop behaves after the first accident tells you more than how it looks when it is first fitted.
Ask which everyday substances mark this material, naming the ones your household genuinely uses such as turmeric, oil, wine or beetroot.
Specific questions produce specific answers, and kitchen surfaces meet a small and predictable set of aggressive substances.
Find out whether a scratch or a chip can be repaired in place, and whether the repair would remain visible once it has been carried out.
Edge chips near a sink or a hob are the most common damage, and the repair options differ sharply between materials.
Ask whether this material needs sealing, and what visible sign would tell you that the sealant has stopped working.
A sealed surface that is no longer sealed looks identical until something is spilled on it.
Ask what would be involved in replacing a single section of a run rather than the whole surface, and whether a later piece would sit comfortably beside the original.
Colour and pattern move between production runs, so a replacement section can be perfectly sound and still read as an obvious patch.
Ask the fabricator to write down the identity of the slab or sheet used in your kitchen, and hold your own copy of it rather than relying on the supplier keeping theirs.
Supplier records change hands, and the owner's copy is the one that survives a change of ownership.

Having these to hand usually makes the first conversation shorter and more useful.
- A rough plan of the kitchen layout showing the sink, hob and appliance positions
- Manufacturer information for the sink, tap and hob you are considering
- A note of who cooks here, how often, and what habits the surface has to tolerate
- Samples and references for each worktop material still under consideration
- Notes of the access route into the room, including door openings and turns
Records
Decisions to record before work begins
Write these down in your own words, with the date, so everyone is working from the same version.
- Which worktop material is preferred and which is the fallback if it is unavailable
- How the sink is mounted and whether drainer grooves are wanted
- Where joins are accepted to fall within the layout

- Where would the joins fall in this layout, and why in those positions?
- Is the overhang I am hoping for achievable, and what would support it?
- At what point is the surface measured, and what must be finished and fixed before then?
- Can a chip or a scratch in this material be repaired in place, and would it show?
- Who is responsible if the delivered piece does not fit the space as measured?
Blind spots
Commonly overlooked items
- The exposed cut edge around an undermounted sink is in constant contact with water and is never seen until it fails.
- Steam vented from a dishwasher or an oven reaches the underside of a worktop, where damage is invisible until it lifts.
- Join positions are set by material supply sizes and layout, not by preference, unless they are discussed early.
- Overhangs for seating are drawn long before anyone establishes what would support them.
- Sink and tap positions stop being adjustable once the surface has been measured.
- A built-up edge that gives the appearance of thickness has a joint, and owners are often unaware of it.
What this checklist does not do
- This checklist prepares a conversation. It does not establish that a material suits your kitchen, which is a matter for the fabricator, the supplier and qualified professionals.
- Clearances around hobs, ovens and other appliances come only from the manufacturer and the installer for the specific appliance being fitted.
- Overhangs, unsupported spans and the support beneath a sink must be established by a qualified professional before they are relied upon.
- Two worktops that look alike can behave very differently towards heat, standing water and blades, so rely on the fabricator and manufacturer information for the piece actually supplied.
