1.The route from the street to the work area
Walk the route rather than picturing it. Almost every access surprise on a garden project is visible to anybody who takes the walk with a barrow in mind.
Walk the full route a loaded wheelbarrow would take from the kerb to the far end of the garden, noting every obstacle on the way.
Walking it reveals thresholds, corners and soft ground that never appear when the route is described from memory at a kitchen table.
Note whether the only route to the rear runs through the house, and write down what that would mean for floors, doorways and furniture.
Through-house access changes protection requirements, working arrangements and what can realistically be carried in, and it is assumed far more often than it is checked.
Record the surface of each part of the route, whether soft ground, gravel, decking, lawn or a drive that may not take weight.
Different surfaces behave very differently under repeated loading, and mixed routes are where damage tends to concentrate.
Whether a drive, cover or structure can carry machinery or a loaded barrow is a matter for a qualified professional to establish.
Note every step, threshold, gate rebate and raised kerb along the route, and photograph each one for reference.
A single step can rule out wheeled plant entirely, which changes how the whole job would need to be approached.
Write down whether the route crosses anything fragile such as a drain access cover, a light fitting or a surface drainage channel.
These are the items most often broken during outdoor works and the easiest to protect once somebody has noticed them.
Consider whether the route can be kept clear throughout, or whether it doubles as the way the household comes and goes.
A shared route means constant clearing and re-securing, which affects how work is organised and should be discussed openly.
2.Pinch points that stop machinery
One narrow point decides whether a garden is a machine job or a hand job. Measuring it is quick and changes the whole conversation.
Measure the narrowest gate or passage on the route, and note whether the gate itself can be lifted off its hinges to gain a little more.
The narrowest point governs what plant can reach the garden, and it decides between machine and hand working more often than the design does.
Measure the height of any archway, canopy, low branch or overhead structure along the route between the street and the work area.
Headroom is regularly forgotten because people look down at the ground rather than up at what they are ducking under.
Record whether the route has a corner too tight to turn a long load such as a sleeper, a beam or a full-size sheet material.
Length matters as much as width, and a route wide enough to walk through may still not allow long items to be turned.
Check whether the gate opening is genuinely square, or whether posts, overgrown hedging or a step reduce the usable clear width.
The clear width at the tightest moment is what counts, not the nominal width of the opening as it was built.
Write down whether any part of the route could be opened up temporarily, such as by removing a fence panel or a section of hedge.
Temporary widening often makes machine access possible, but it needs establishing early rather than assumed on the first working morning.
Removing a boundary panel or a section of hedge may need the neighbour's agreement; take suitably qualified advice before relying on it.
Consider what happens if plant cannot reach the work area at all, and note whether hand working throughout is acceptable to you.
Being clear about this in advance avoids a proposal being reshaped late once the access limitation becomes obvious to everybody.
3.Parking, loading and the public edge
What happens at the kerb is often outside your control entirely. These are things to confirm locally rather than assume from what neighbours do.
Note where a vehicle can stop near the property and write down any restrictions marked on the street outside.
Loading arrangements shape the whole approach to a project, and the constraints are often specific to the street rather than the area.
Parking, loading and any use of the highway or footway must be confirmed locally with the relevant authority.
Record whether a container or material store could stand on your own land, and if not, where else it might possibly go.
Somewhere to put materials and waste is a physical prerequisite, and plots without it need a different way of working.
Placing a container or materials on a public road or footpath must be confirmed locally with the relevant authority and never assumed.
Write down whether the property sits on a busy road, a bend or a school route that would affect when deliveries could be taken.
Street conditions can limit when a vehicle may unload, which affects how a project is organised from the outset.
Ask whether deliveries would need a smaller vehicle rather than a large one, and whether there is anywhere at all for one to turn.
Access for the delivery vehicle is a separate question from access for the barrow, and it is often the more restrictive of the two.
Consider whether materials can be stored on the plot at all, or whether everything would have to arrive as it is needed.
Sites without storage need more deliveries and more coordination, which is worth flagging before anybody plans the work.
Record where a neighbouring drive or parking space sits relative to any position a vehicle would use for loading.
Blocking a neighbour in is one of the fastest ways to turn a straightforward project into a difficult one.
4.Protecting what the route passes over
Damage arguments almost always come down to what nobody recorded beforehand. Ten minutes with a camera prevents most of them.
Photograph the condition of the drive, path and lawn before any work starts, including cracks, stains and marks that are already there.
A dated record of pre-existing damage prevents a later argument about what the works caused and what was there all along.
Note which surfaces would need protecting and agree in writing who provides that protection and who keeps it in place.
Protection is frequently assumed to be included by the owner and assumed to be extra by the contractor, which is a familiar source of friction.
Record where an underground service or drain is thought to run beneath the access route, as far as you know from covers and paperwork.
Loading over a shallow service is a genuine risk on domestic plots and is worth flagging even when the information is uncertain.
Only a qualified professional can establish what runs under an access route; assume nothing from the position of a cover.
Note whether tree roots lie under the route and whether repeated loading over that ground would be a concern.
Root zones extend much further than most people expect, and compaction from an access route can cause harm that shows only later.
Loading over tree roots may be restricted; ask a qualified arboricultural professional and confirm locally what protection applies.
Write down which planting along the route you would be upset to lose, and whether anything should be lifted and held before work starts.
Plants worth saving can usually be moved in advance, but only if somebody identified them before the first delivery arrives.
Consider whether pets or young children use the route, and how it will be secured whenever nobody is working on site.
An open gate on a working route is a routine hazard, and how it is managed should be agreed rather than left to chance.
5.Getting waste and spoil out
Everything that comes out of a garden has to leave by the same constrained route everything else came in by. That symmetry is often forgotten.
Think about how much material is likely to leave the site and whether it has to travel the same tight route as everything coming in.
Removal is usually the larger movement on a landscape project, and access limits bite harder on the way out than on the way in.
Record where a full barrow can actually be turned and tipped, and whether that place is on your own land or on the street.
A tipping point on public land raises questions that need answering before it is relied on as part of the method.
Write down whether green waste, soil, rubble and packaging would be separated, and ask who is responsible for each stream.
Different materials are handled differently, and clarity about responsibility avoids waste accumulating in the garden.
Ask who carries responsibility for waste handling and disposal here, and confirm locally with the relevant authority what applies.
Note whether existing surfaces or buried material coming up might contain anything requiring special handling.
Older outbuildings, sheds and made-up ground occasionally contain materials that must not be broken up casually.
Any suspicion of hazardous material in an existing surface or structure must go to a suitably qualified specialist before it is disturbed.
Consider whether a container could stand on the plot for the whole of the works or only at intervals, and note the consequence either way.
Intermittent container availability changes how material is stockpiled, which in turn affects how much of the garden is occupied.
Record where tools and equipment would be washed out on site, and where that water and residue would end up.
Wash-out water carries fines and residues, and an agreed position for it protects both planting and drainage.
7.Living on site while work is under way
Outdoor works happen around a household that carries on living there. These prompts cover what the household still needs to be able to do.
Decide how the household will get in and out while the route is occupied, particularly when carrying shopping or pushing a buggy.
Arrangements that seem obvious in fine weather often fail once the route is muddy, stacked with materials or partly dug up.
Work out where bins will be presented for collection if the usual route through the side passage is blocked.
Collections continue regardless of the works, and an unworkable arrangement becomes obvious in the least convenient way.
Write down whether a working toilet, tap and power point are available on site, and who is expected to provide each of them.
Assumptions about facilities differ widely between owners and contractors, and settling it early avoids awkwardness later.
Consider whether pets can be kept away from open excavations, materials and gates left temporarily unsecured.
A garden under works is a very different environment for animals, and the arrangement should be agreed rather than improvised.
Agree in writing how the site will be left secure whenever work stops, including gates, excavations and stacked materials.
The state a site is left in matters most on the plots where the household and neighbours share the space around it.
Decide whether any part of the garden has to stay usable throughout, and say so before the sequence of work is planned.
A requirement stated at the start can usually be accommodated; the same requirement raised mid-project rarely can.

- Notes recording the narrowest gate and the lowest headroom on the route
- Any property paperwork mentioning shared access or rights over land
- Contact details for the neighbours affected by the access route
- Notes on parking or loading restrictions marked on the street outside
Records
Decisions to record before work begins
Write these down in your own words, with the date, so everyone is working from the same version.
- Whether access through the house is acceptable to the whole household
- Where materials and spoil may stand on your own land during the works
- Who provides and maintains protection for surfaces along the route
- Which planting or fencing may be removed temporarily to widen access
- What arrangement covers gates, excavations and stacked materials when work stops
- Which parts of the garden must remain usable throughout the project

Bring these to the relevant qualified professional, supplier or authority. Requirements vary by project and location.
- What is the largest piece of plant that could realistically reach the work area?
- How would the work change if everything had to be moved by hand?
- Who is responsible for protecting the drive, the path and the lawn?
- How will waste be separated and removed, and who carries that duty?
- What would need confirming locally before anything stands on the street?
- How is it established what runs under the route before it is loaded?
- What access do you need to a neighbouring plot, and at what stage?
- How will the site be left secure when nobody is working here?

Commonly overlooked items
- The side gate that cannot be lifted off because the hinges are seized
- Headroom under a canopy or a low branch on the only available route
- A drain access cover sitting directly on the barrow run
- Where a full barrow can actually be turned and tipped
- Bin collections continuing while the side passage is blocked
- Existing cracks in the drive that nobody photographed beforehand
What this checklist does not do
- No observation in this checklist tells you what a drive, a cover or a structure can carry.
- Nothing here settles what may stand on a road, a footway or a verge; that is for the relevant authority.
- A route used informally for years is not evidence of a right to bring works traffic along it.
- Waste duties and any suspected hazardous material belong with qualified specialists from the outset.
