1.After-dark use and the routes you actually walk
Lighting conversations go better when they start from how the space behaves at night rather than from a wish list of fittings.
Walk the whole plot after dark on an ordinary evening and write down where you slow down, hesitate or reach for a phone torch.
The places you instinctively find awkward in the dark are usually the ones worth raising first, and they are easy to forget in daylight.
Note which outdoor tasks happen after dark through the year, such as reaching bins, unlocking a store or loading a car, and where each one starts and ends.
Task points often sit well away from the areas people assume need light, such as the far end of a side return.
Record where people habitually stand and talk outdoors, which is often not where the seating has been arranged.
Groups tend to gather near doors and steps, so a scheme planned only around furniture can leave those spots dim.
Write down which windows overlook the garden and which rooms are in use during the evening, because light entering the house is part of the scheme.
A fitting that looks pleasant from the garden can be uncomfortable when it is viewed from a sofa or from a bed.
Consider whether the space is ever used after dark by children, older visitors or anyone with limited mobility, and note where they move.
Who uses the space changes which routes matter, and it is information a designer cannot obtain by visiting once in daylight.
Anything to do with safe movement, step visibility or level changes belongs in a conversation with a qualified professional rather than in your own conclusions.
Note the parts of the plot you would rather keep dark, and say so explicitly when you brief anyone.
Owners usually describe only what they want lit, and end up with a scheme that leaves nowhere restful or genuinely unlit.
2.Existing supply, switch positions and cable evidence
Before anyone can discuss what is possible, it helps to record what is already there and where it appears to run.
Photograph every existing outdoor socket, fitting and junction box, including the ones that no longer work, and note which wall or post each sits on.
Fittings that have stopped working still show where a supply once reached, and that is useful evidence for whoever advises you.
Note where cables appear to enter or leave the building outdoors, and where any visible conduit runs across a wall or under an eaves line.
Visible routes hint at how the outside was originally served and often explain why fittings are grouped where they are.
Do not open, test or trace anything yourself; describe only what is visible and let a qualified electrician establish what the arrangement actually is.
Find out which internal switch controls each existing outdoor fitting, and write that mapping down before anything is removed.
This mapping is lost the moment fittings come down, and rebuilding it later usually means guesswork on site.
Ask whoever holds the property paperwork whether any drawing, service record or earlier works note shows buried outdoor cabling.
Even an incomplete record narrows down where somebody has dug before, which is far better than starting with nothing.
Note every part of the garden where you know something is buried, such as an old pond supply, a store feed or an irrigation line, even if nothing is visible.
Buried unknowns shape where new routes can go, and raising them before any digging is planned avoids awkward surprises.
Ask a qualified electrician what they need to see or test to establish whether the existing outdoor supply could serve anything more.
Knowing what they need in advance shortens the first visit and keeps the discussion on what is genuinely possible.
Whether an existing circuit can take additional outdoor fittings is an electrical judgement; record the answer you are given rather than assuming one.
3.Light spill towards neighbours and the street
Outdoor light rarely stops at the boundary. Recording where it would land makes for a far more useful first conversation.
Stand at each boundary in turn and note which neighbouring windows, gardens or footpaths have a clear view of the areas you want lit.
Standing where the neighbour stands is the quickest way to understand what a scheme would look like from outside your plot.
Note whether any part of the plot faces a road, lane or shared access, and whether light aimed that way could reach drivers or passers-by.
What is acceptable near a highway or a shared access is a local matter; confirm the position with the relevant authority and with a qualified professional.
Consider whether to raise the idea with neighbours before design work starts, and write down what you would want to tell them.
Conversations held early tend to be about preferences, while the same conversation after installation tends to be about complaints.
Write down which of your own bedroom windows face the areas being lit, and whether anything would still be lit once the house is asleep.
Light entering a bedroom is a common reason a new outdoor scheme quietly stops being switched on at all.
Note any pond, mature hedge, tree canopy or rough grass that wildlife uses, and flag it as something to discuss rather than to decide.
Effects on protected species or habitats are matters for an appropriately qualified ecologist or for your local authority, not for an owner checklist.
Ask what can be adjusted after installation, such as aim, shielding or brightness, so that spill problems can be dealt with without rewiring.
Adjustability is worth knowing about before fittings are chosen, because it decides how recoverable a mistake will be.
4.Fixing surfaces, mounting points and planting growth
Where a fitting can be attached shapes the whole scheme, and planting that is small now will not stay that way.
Note what each wall, fence or post you imagine using is actually made of, and whether it is yours, shared or the neighbours.
Fixing anything to a shared or boundary structure is an ownership question; take it to a suitably qualified adviser before planning around it.
Write down which fences, posts or trellis panels are loose, leaning or clearly nearing the end of their useful life.
Mounting new fittings on a structure due for replacement means the same work has to be undone and repeated.
Photograph the plants near each position you have in mind and note their likely mature spread as far as you can establish it.
A fitting that reads beautifully at planting time can be swallowed by growth, and pruning to suit lighting rarely suits the plant.
Consider which fittings would sit where people brush past, where mowing happens, or where furniture is dragged, and mark those positions as vulnerable.
Damage tends to happen in predictable places, and moving a position slightly at the planning stage takes no effort at all.
Note whether any position sits over paving that is due to be lifted, relaid or extended as part of other work.
Sequencing matters here: cable routes under new paving are straightforward before it is laid and disruptive afterwards.
Ask a qualified professional what fixing into your particular wall or surface would involve before assuming a position is available.
Fixings into masonry, render, cladding or any structure holding back ground are technical judgements to be established on site by someone qualified.
5.Controls, zoning and how the scheme is switched
Most dissatisfaction with outdoor lighting comes from how it is switched rather than from the fittings themselves.
Decide and record which areas you would want to light independently of each other, and which would always come on together.
Zoning is the single decision that most shapes whether a scheme feels flexible or clumsy in daily use.
Note where you would naturally reach for a switch when stepping into the garden, and where you would want to turn everything off from indoors.
Switch positions follow habits that already exist, and those habits are easier to observe than to predict.
Consider whether you want anything to come on automatically, and write down what would be unwelcome if it triggered at the wrong moment.
Automatic switching that responds to a passing animal or a swaying branch becomes a nuisance very quickly.
Decide whether other people in the household need to be able to change the scheme, and how simple that has to be for them.
A control arrangement only one person understands tends to be abandoned by everybody else.
Write down whether you want any part of the scheme to work independently of a phone, an app or a network connection.
Control choices are hard to reverse once cabling and fittings are chosen, and some households find app-only control a real nuisance.
Ask what happens to the scheme if a controller fails or a network connection drops, and record the answer you are given.
How a control system behaves in a fault condition is a question for the installer and the manufacturer; record what they state rather than assuming.
6.Coordination with paving, planting and other outdoor work
Lighting is usually designed last and installed first. Recording the overlaps early is what prevents rework.
List every other outdoor change under consideration, such as paving, steps, a store, a fence or new beds, and mark which would sit over a likely cable route.
The overlap between trades is where outdoor schemes usually unravel, and it is visible as soon as everything is on one list.
Ask who is responsible for coordinating between whoever lays the hard surfaces and whoever carries out the electrical work.
Ducting left in the wrong place, or not left at all, is one of the most common outdoor lighting regrets.
Write down whether you would want spare ducting left for future additions, and where you would want it to run to.
Spare routes are far easier to include while the ground is already open than to add at any later point.
Note which parts of the garden a machine would have to cross to reach the work area, and whether cabling would be at risk while that happens.
Protecting buried or newly laid services during works is a matter for the contractor to plan and to confirm in writing.
Consider whether irrigation, drainage or a water feature are also planned, and flag the points where those routes might meet lighting routes.
Where services cross, the separation and protection required is for the relevant qualified trades to establish on site.
Agree in writing who reinstates turf, planting or paving disturbed by cable routes, and to what condition.
Reinstatement is regularly assumed by the owner and excluded by everyone else, which only becomes clear at the end.
7.Cleaning, replacement and long-term access
A scheme you cannot reach, clean or repair tends to fade out one fitting at a time.
Ask how each fitting is opened, cleaned and relamped, and whether that is something you could do or something needing a qualified electrician.
Knowing this before choosing changes which fittings are realistic for a household that would rather not call anybody out.
Note which positions sit behind planting, above head height or over water, and mark them as harder to service.
Positions that are awkward to reach tend to be the ones that quietly stay broken.
Write down how you would feel about visible fittings in daylight, since most outdoor fittings are seen far more often unlit than lit.
The unlit appearance is what you actually live with, yet it is almost never discussed when a scheme is being chosen.
Consider how leaf fall, mowing debris, frost and coastal salt behave in your particular garden, and note the corners that stay wet or dirty.
Local conditions decide how often anything needs cleaning, and they vary enormously between plots on the same street.
Ask what the supplier states about the service life of the light source and whether it can be replaced separately from the fitting.
Service life and replacement parts vary by product; take the answer from manufacturer documentation rather than from general expectation.
Decide and record who you would contact if a fitting stops working after the work is finished, and what information they would need from you.
Writing this down while everyone is still involved is far easier than reconstructing it long afterwards.

- A rough sketch of the plot showing buildings, boundaries, paving and planted areas

- Evening photographs showing how the space actually looks and behaves after dark
- Any plan of the property showing which walls, fences and posts you own
Records
Decisions to record before work begins
Write these down in your own words, with the date, so everyone is working from the same version.

Blind spots
Commonly overlooked items
- The route between the back door and the bins, walked in the dark far more often than the terrace
- Views out from the house at night, which most schemes are designed without ever checking
- Ducting under new paving, straightforward while the ground is open and disruptive afterwards
- Mature plant spread, which swallows fittings that looked perfectly placed at planting
- Where the scheme gets switched off from at the end of an evening, often from a bedroom
- How fittings look in daylight, when they are unlit for most of the time anyone sees them
