This is general planning preparation. These situations need a qualified professional, and often the relevant authority.

1.Where being able to lower the light would actually change something
Dimming is often requested everywhere and used in two rooms. Work out honestly where it earns its place.
List the rooms that are genuinely used in two different ways at different times, since those are the rooms where a range of settings does real work.
A room with a single use rarely benefits from a range, and including it dilutes attention from the rooms that need it.
Note where you currently switch a light off entirely because it is too bright, rather than because you wanted the room dark.
This is the clearest evidence of a room that needs a lower setting, and it is easy to observe over a single evening.
Record which rooms are used in the last part of the evening, and how much light is wanted there compared with earlier on.
The difference between early evening and late evening is one of the commonest reasons owners want a range at all.
Note where a screen is watched and how far the surrounding light would need to come down for that to be comfortable after dark.
How far the light has to come down for comfortable viewing is a question about range rather than about fittings, and it differs between rooms.
Record which rooms change character when people visit, and whether the difference is about the amount of light or about which parts of the room are lit.
Owners often ask for dimming when what they actually want is a different combination of lights, which is a different answer.
Name the rooms where you would never use a range, such as a store or a utility space, and say so explicitly in your notes.
Stating where you do not want something is as useful as stating where you do, and it keeps the arrangement from spreading by default.
2.Questions about whether what you choose can be dimmed at all
Whether a lamp, a fitting and a control work well together is not something an owner can settle. These are questions to carry, not to answer.
Ask whether a fitting you like can be dimmed at all before falling for it, and record the answer alongside the fitting in your notes.
Attachment to a fitting forms quickly, and finding out afterwards leads to compromises made for the wrong reasons.
Whether a given fitting and lamp can be dimmed, and by what, must be confirmed by the supplier and a suitably qualified electrician.
Ask plainly who is taking responsibility for confirming that the lamps, fittings and controls work properly together, and record the answer.
This question falls between the supplier and the electrician more often than any other in a lighting project.
Confirming that particular equipment works together is a matter for the supplier and the electrician, not for the owner to determine.
Note where anything currently buzzes, hums or flickers when dimmed, and raise each instance rather than treating it as normal.
Buzzing, humming or flickering should be raised with a suitably qualified electrician rather than lived with or investigated by the owner.
Ask how far down each arrangement is expected to go, and whether the bottom of the range is likely to be steady or uneven.
The lowest part of the range is what owners care about most and is the part most likely to disappoint.
Ask what happens if a lamp is replaced later with a different one, and what you would need to know to choose a suitable replacement.
Replacement is the point at which a carefully arranged setup quietly stops behaving, usually with nobody remembering why.
What may be substituted for an existing lamp is a question for the supplier and the electrician who set the arrangement up.
Note where you are hoping several different kinds of fitting will be governed by the same control, and flag it as a question rather than an assumption.
Mixed groups behave unevenly, and the mismatch shows up most clearly at the lower end of the range.
3.Deciding how much a single control should govern
Grouping is a decision for the owner to inform, and it determines the daily experience more than any equipment choice.
For each room, write which lights you would always want to change together and which you would want to change alone.
This is typically among the most useful things you can hand over, and it comes from how you live rather than from any technical judgement.
Consider whether a wall of separate controls in one room would actually be used, or whether you would settle on one and ignore the rest.
Fine-grained control is frequently requested and then reduced in practice to two familiar settings.
Note where a single control governing everything in a room would force you to light the whole space to see one part of it.
Under-grouping produces the all-or-nothing complaint that layering was meant to solve in the first place.
Record whether you want any control to govern lights in more than one room, such as switching off a whole floor on the way to bed.
This intention has to be stated early because it affects how everything else is arranged around it.
Ask how each control will be identified, and note whether the arrangement would still make sense to somebody who did not design it.
An arrangement that only its author can interpret quietly becomes one setting that everybody uses and several that nobody touches.
Record how anyone can get full light in a room quickly when something is spilled, dropped or lost on the floor.
Every household needs an immediate way to light a room properly, and it should not depend on remembering a sequence.
4.Preset settings and who is allowed to change them
Fixed settings are convenient until somebody wants something slightly different. Decide in advance how much freedom the household has.
Decide how many stored settings each room genuinely needs, and describe each one by the activity it serves rather than by a number.
Settings named after activities are remembered and used; settings identified only by position on a control are not.
Record whether everyone in the household should be able to adjust a stored setting, or whether that should stay with one person.
Both answers are defensible, but the decision has to be made deliberately rather than discovered after somebody changes everything.
Ask what happens if a stored setting is changed by accident and how it would be restored, then record who is able to do that.
How stored settings are managed and restored is specific to the equipment and should be explained by the supplier or installer at handover.
Note that a setting agreed during works may feel wrong once furniture and finishes are in, and ask when it can be adjusted properly.
Rooms are commissioned empty and lived in full, and the difference is large enough to make every setting provisional.
Consider whether the settings you want in the darker part of the season are the same as those you want when evenings are light.
Owners often set everything up in one season and then find the arrangement unsuitable when the daylight changes.
Plan to record which settings actually get used once the room is in service, so the unused ones can be reconsidered rather than left cluttering the control.
Watching what actually gets used afterwards is usually a far better guide than any prediction to which of your intentions matched your habits.
5.Control by phone, panel or voice, and what happens when it fails
Anything that depends on a device or a connection needs a plan for the evening it does not work. Ask about that before agreeing to it.
Ask what would still be operable if a phone is flat, a connection is down or a device has been taken away by whoever owns it.
The answer to this question decides whether an arrangement is convenient or fragile, and it is easy to ask early.
What remains operable when part of a control arrangement fails is a question for the supplier and installer to answer for the specific equipment.
Record whether you want conventional controls kept on the wall alongside anything more involved, and in which rooms that matters most.
Keeping a familiar control on the wall is a decision to make at the start, because adding one later is disruptive.
Ask what accounts, logins or ownership sit behind any control arrangement, and record who in the household holds them.
Control tied to one person leaves everyone else dependent on them, which becomes a genuine problem if circumstances change.
Ask what happens when the equipment or its software changes, and who would deal with it if the behaviour changed unexpectedly.
Ongoing support arrangements for control equipment should be established with the supplier or installer before anything is agreed.
Consider whether you want anything in the household to be operable by voice, and record where you would not want that at all.
This is a household preference rather than a technical matter, and it is worth stating before an arrangement is proposed.
Note whether visitors would need any access to the controls, and how they would get it without being given anything you would rather keep private.
Guest access is almost never planned for and is discovered on the first evening somebody stays.
6.Lights that switch themselves and how to overrule them
Anything triggered automatically is delightful in the right place and infuriating everywhere else. Say where you would welcome it.
Record the places you would genuinely welcome a light coming on without anyone touching anything, such as a store cupboard or an entrance approach.
Automatic switching earns its place where hands are full or the visit is brief, and rarely anywhere people settle.
Note the rooms where you would find a light switching itself on intrusive, and say so as plainly as you say where you would welcome it.
Unwanted automation is much harder to remove afterwards than it is to leave out at the start.
Ask how an automatically triggered light is overruled by hand when you want it to stay off, and record the answer before agreeing to anything.
Not being able to keep a light off is a frequent complaint about automatic arrangements in homes, and it is easily raised in advance.
Note whether pets move through the property at night, since anything responding to movement will respond to them as well.
This is obvious once said and almost never mentioned before installation.
Record where somebody sits still for a long stretch, such as reading or working, and raise what would keep the light on in that situation.
Sitting still is indistinguishable from absence to many arrangements, which is why people end up waving at the ceiling.
Note any automatic light intended outdoors and consider what it would do to neighbouring windows as well as to your own approach.
Anything that lights itself outdoors, and what it throws beyond your boundary, is for a qualified professional to advise on against whatever applies locally.
7.Anyone who has to operate it without being shown
The real test of a control arrangement is a person meeting it for the first time in the dark with nobody to ask.
Imagine somebody arriving alone in the evening who has never been in the property, and describe how they would light the route to a bedroom.
Describing this journey concretely exposes gaps that no room-by-room discussion reveals.
Note anyone who comes into the property to help, clean or care, and what they need to be able to operate without instruction.
These people use rooms at unusual hours and are rarely present when a system is being explained to the household.
Record whether any control would need to work for a young child or for somebody who prefers a plain switch, and where that applies.
Where a household member has particular needs, the suitability of any control should be discussed with a qualified professional advising that person.
Ask what written explanation you will be given at handover, and whether it will make sense to somebody who was not there.
Spoken handovers tend to evaporate, and a written explanation is often the part that remains usable long afterwards.
Agree how controls will be labelled or identified, and note that this is far easier to settle before the work happens than afterwards.
Labelling is treated as a finishing detail and therefore gets rushed, which is why so few control arrangements have any.
Consider whether the arrangement would be usable by somebody else entirely, and record what they would need to be given.
An arrangement nobody else can operate becomes a liability rather than an improvement, and that is worth weighing now.

Having these to hand usually makes the first conversation shorter and more useful.
- Notes on where you currently switch a light off entirely because it is too bright
- A list of which lights you would always want to change together in each room
- Details of any fittings and lamps you are considering, as supplied by the maker
- Notes on anything that currently buzzes, hums or flickers when dimmed
- A written record of who in the household would hold any accounts or logins
- Whatever written explanation you are promised at handover, requested in advance
