1.Where water actually sits, and for how long
Wet is not the same everywhere on a surface. The parts that stay wet longest are the ones worth describing carefully to anybody advising you.
Go out after heavy rain and note where water lies, how long it stays and which parts of the surface never seem to dry at all.
Standing water marks the low points and the shaded corners at the same time, and it does so more reliably than any inspection on a dry day.
Record which areas are still damp late in the day when everything else has dried, and mark those areas on a sketch.
The strip that dries last is where growth establishes, and it is usually the same strip year after year.
Note where water arrives on the surface from something other than rain: a downpipe, an overflow, an outside tap, a hose reel or splashing from a pool.
A surface kept wet by something else behaves as though it rains there constantly, and the cause is often easy to move.
Write down where the ground appears to fall towards a doorway or a step, and raise it with a professional rather than working out a remedy.
Where water is allowed to go, and how ground is shaped to send it there, is designed by qualified professionals rather than judged on site by an owner.
Consider whether run-off from a roof, a slope or a neighbouring plot crosses the area, and photograph it while it is actually happening.
Water arriving from outside your plot changes the whole conversation, and it is hard to describe convincingly without a photograph.
2.What settles on the surface across the seasons
Very few outdoor surfaces are slippery in themselves. Most difficulty comes from what has landed on them and been left there.
Note which trees, shrubs and climbers overhang the area and what they drop, whether that is leaves, blossom, berries, needles, sap or fruit.
Crushed berries and wet leaves are the usual cause of a surface turning treacherous, and the plant responsible is often on a neighbouring plot.
Record whether the surface greens up in shade, and note which part of the year you first begin to notice it.
Growth that returns on schedule is a maintenance question rather than a material fault, and knowing when it starts helps plan for it.
Consider what gets spilled where people eat and cook outdoors, including cooking oil, fat, drinks and sun cream.
Cooking residue and sun cream reach surfaces near seating far more often than owners expect, and both change a finish underfoot.
Write down whether soil, bark, gravel or grass clippings migrate onto the surface from beside it, and where they come in from.
Loose material arriving from an adjacent bed or path is a design problem at the edge, not a cleaning problem on the surface.
Record who grits or clears this area in freezing weather and what they reach for, since that habit is usually established long before a surface is chosen.
Ask the manufacturer what may go on this surface in freezing conditions, since some winter products mark or degrade a finish permanently.
3.Asking a supplier what information they actually hold
Suppliers hold more information than they usually volunteer. Asking for it in writing, about the exact finish, is the part owners skip.
Ask each supplier what information they hold about how the surface performs underfoot in wet conditions, and ask for that in writing.
Only the manufacturer and a qualified professional can advise on how a surface performs underfoot, and the answer depends on the setting.
Ask whether the information applies to the exact finish you are considering, since the same material is often sold in several finishes.
Two panels of the same stone or board can behave quite differently once the surface treatment differs, and the name on the sample rarely says so.
Ask what changes with age, wear, cleaning and the treatments they recommend, rather than assuming a surface stays as it starts.
A finish that relies on texture can smooth in the places people walk most, which is exactly where the behaviour matters.
Ask whether the surface is intended for the kind of area you have in mind, and record their answer as they give it.
Materials sold for outdoor use are not all sold for the same outdoor use, and the distinction is usually clear only when you ask directly.
Ask what they would expect to happen to this surface in a shaded position like yours, and whether they have anything to show for it.
A supplier who has seen their product in shade will say so plainly, and one who has not is worth knowing about too.
4.Looking at a sample without fooling yourself
Almost every regretted surface was chosen from a dry sample under indoor lighting. A fairer test is easy to arrange and asks only for a little patience.
Ask for a sample large enough to stand on, since a small piece held in the hand tells you very little about a surface underfoot.
Texture that feels pronounced under a fingertip can be barely noticeable under a shoe, and the difference only shows at full size.
Wet the sample and look at it outdoors in daylight, rather than judging it dry under the lighting of a showroom.
Colour, sheen and texture all read differently once a surface is wet, and wet is the condition you are actually asking about.
Leave a sample outside in the position you have in mind and look at it again after a spell of proper weather.
A sample left in place picks up the shade, the drips and the leaf fall of that exact spot, which no showroom can reproduce.
Note that the texture giving a surface its grip also holds dirt, and ask how it is cleaned without wearing that texture away.
Grip and cleanability pull against each other, and understanding that trade is more useful than choosing the roughest option available.
Compare samples in the same light and in the same condition, since a fair comparison is impossible once one is wet and the other is dry.
Side-by-side comparison is only meaningful when the conditions match, and it is surprisingly easy to get this wrong without noticing.
5.Who uses the surface, and in what footwear
The same surface serves a person in boots and a child running barefoot quite differently. Whoever advises you needs to know which it is.
Note who is barefoot here, who runs and who is unsteady on their feet, since the same surface serves each of them quite differently.
Whether a surface suits a particular person is for a qualified professional to advise on, taking account of their needs and of this setting.
Note what people have on their feet here: bare feet near water, socks stepping straight out of a door, work boots, or nothing much in warm weather.
Footwear changes how a surface behaves more than most owners realise, and it varies hugely between one part of a garden and another.
Consider whether anything is wheeled across, such as a barrow, a bin, a pram or a mobility aid, and note where those wheels turn.
Wheels behave differently again, particularly where they turn on the spot, and turning points wear a surface unevenly.
Record where people carry things with both hands and cannot see their feet, such as the run between a kitchen and an outdoor table.
The carrying route is where a change underfoot is least likely to be noticed, so it deserves the most thought.
Note whether dogs run and turn on the surface, since claws behave quite differently from shoes on some finishes.
A surface that suits people can be poor for an animal running on it, and the marks left by claws matter to some owners as well.
6.Shade, shelter and the parts that never dry
Drying depends on sun and moving air together. A sheltered corner can be the most attractive part of a garden and the slowest to dry.
Note which parts of the area sit in shade for most of the day and which see direct sun, and how that changes as the seasons turn.
Shade patterns move a long way through the year, and a spot chosen in high summer can be in shadow for much of the rest of it.
Record where air moves freely and where it does not, since a sheltered corner may look inviting and stay damp far longer.
Still air is the reason two areas with the same material behave differently, and it is easy to feel on a breezy day.
Consider what a canopy, pergola or wall does to drying, both by keeping rain off and by keeping sun and moving air away.
Any overhead structure above an outdoor area is a design matter for a qualified professional, particularly where it is fixed to the house.
Note the strip immediately beside the house where roof run-off, dripping and shadow tend to coincide.
That narrow band is often the worst-performing part of a terrace and the part people walk on most, because it runs past the door.
Write down whether the area is used at hours when it will be covered in dew, such as first thing or late in the evening.
Dew is easily forgotten in planning and is present on the surface at exactly the times a garden is quietly used.
7.Thresholds and the change from one surface to another
Difficulty underfoot concentrates where surfaces meet. These points are worth listing individually rather than treating as detail.
Note every point where somebody steps from one surface onto another, and whether the two feel noticeably different underfoot.
A change in feel is a warning to the person walking, and an unnoticed change is the one that catches them out.
Record what happens at the door between inside and outside, including how much water is carried in on shoes.
The floor just inside the door is where wet shoes actually arrive, so the outdoor surface question does not stop at the threshold.
Consider whether a mat, grid or covered strip has a place in the route, and where it would sit without becoming something to trip on.
Anything laid loosely on a route needs a home that does not create a new edge, and that is a layout question rather than an accessory one.
Write down where a surface changes at the same moment the level changes, since two changes at once ask a great deal of someone carrying things.
Where a change of surface coincides with a step, ask a qualified professional what applies and confirm the position with the local authority.
Note where a smooth surface meets loose material, since gravel carried onto smooth paving behaves quite unlike either surface on its own.
Loose grit on a smooth finish is one of the commonest complaints in gardens with both, and it is a question of edges and routes.
8.Cleaning, sealing and what they do to grip
How a surface is looked after changes how it behaves. Both parts of that belong in the choice, not in a conversation after the work.
Ask what may and may not be used to clean each surface, and record it before choosing rather than after the first mark appears.
Cleaning methods and products come from the manufacturer alone, and a surface that is already damaged should be looked at by a qualified professional.
Ask what a sealant or treatment does to the way a surface behaves underfoot, since some finishes change considerably once treated.
Treatment is often presented purely as protection, and its effect on the feel of the surface is worth asking about directly.
Note whether an existing surface has been cleaned under high pressure before, since heavy cleaning can wear away the very texture that gave it grip.
Whether a surface tolerates pressure washing is for the manufacturer to state, and damage caused this way is rarely reversible.
Write down who would clear leaves and growth, and how often that would realistically happen through the wetter part of the year.
Clearing is the single most effective thing done to an outdoor surface, and it only happens if somebody has agreed to do it.
Note whether an existing surface has already been sealed or treated by somebody else, and gather whatever record of that you can find.
An unknown previous treatment affects what can be applied next, and a professional will ask about it before advising.
