1.Exposure already written into the plot
An exposed site has been telling you about itself for years. These prompts collect the evidence before anyone has to guess at how windy it is.
Note any existing planting that leans, grows one-sided or is bare on one face, and write down which direction the bare side looks towards.
Growth shaped by wind is the most reliable exposure record a plot can offer, and reading it asks nothing more than a walk round.
Record where foliage browns at the edges or dies back on one side after a blow, and note whether it happens across the plot or only in certain positions.
Damage limited to one area points at a local effect that a designer can work around rather than a whole-site condition.
Write down which fence panels, posts or boundary structures have failed before, how often and in which spots.
Repeated failure in one position usually marks where the wind concentrates, which matters as much for planting as for fencing.
Whether a boundary structure can withstand the conditions here is a question for a qualified professional, not something to judge from past survivals.
Note any gap, thin patch or dead length in an existing hedge, and mark whether the gap faces the direction the weather usually arrives from.
A gap in shelter funnels wind through at speed, and it often explains losses some distance downwind of it.
List what has been planted here before and failed, along with where it stood and roughly when in the year it went, as far as anyone can recall.
A history of losses is genuine site evidence, and it saves a professional from proposing something that has already been tried.
Ask longer-standing neighbours what they have watched fail and survive on their side, and record it as their observation rather than as fact.
Local experience covers a longer stretch than yours does, and it is the closest thing to real data an exposed site offers.
2.Where salt, grit and blown sand actually reach
Exposure and salt are separate conditions that often arrive together. Recording where each one lands stops the whole garden being treated as the worst part of it.
Note where salt or a fine film settles on windows, glass and cars, and how far inland or uphill from the boundary that reaches.
Deposits on hard surfaces mark the reach of spray far more accurately than any assumption based on distance from the shore.
Record whether spray reaches the garden only during storms or throughout the windy part of the year, described plainly from what you have watched.
Occasional exposure and constant exposure are different briefs, and lumping them together produces an unnecessarily bleak scheme.
Write down whether anything applied to a nearby road, path or drive in cold weather can splash or drain onto your beds.
Road treatments concentrate along the beds nearest the edge, and this is invisible to anyone visiting the plot in fine weather.
What is applied to a public road, and what it means for planting alongside it, is a matter to raise with the local authority.
Note where blown sand or grit collects on the plot, since abrasion at low level is a different problem from wind pressure higher up.
Scouring at ground level damages young planting in a way that has nothing to do with how tall or strong it is.
Mark which beds are shielded from spray by a building, bank or existing planting, even if they are still fully exposed to wind.
Separating salt exposure from wind exposure opens up positions that would otherwise be written off along with the rest.
Ask a qualified professional how salt reaching the ground here would be established and what that would mean for planting into it.
This is a soil question rather than a planting one, and it belongs with someone who can test rather than estimate.
Soil condition, salinity and contamination are matters for a qualified professional to establish on your plot rather than to infer from the location.
3.The sheltered pockets your plot already has
Nearly every exposed garden has calmer corners. Finding them before designing new shelter usually changes where the good planting should go.
Walk the plot on a windy day and mark every spot where you can stand comfortably, however small, since those pockets are the plot telling you where shelter exists.
Comfort on foot is a rough but honest measure of shelter, and it is one an owner can take repeatedly through the year.
Note what creates each sheltered spot, whether a wall, a bank, an outbuilding or existing planting, and whether it stands on your land.
Shelter provided by something you do not control can disappear without warning, and the risk is worth writing down.
Record where wind accelerates through gaps, gateways, side passages or the space between buildings, and mark those lines on your sketch.
Funnelled wind is often stronger than open exposure, and beds placed in those lines fail for a reason nobody looked for.
Note whether the ground immediately behind a solid wall or fence is actually calm or unexpectedly turbulent when the wind gets up.
Solid barriers do not always give the shelter people assume, and this is something you can feel long before you design around it.
Ask what any proposed shelter planting would have to withstand here and what it would need while it establishes, before treating it as a solution.
Shelter planting is itself the most exposed planting on the site, which is the part owners usually skip over.
Whether planting can shelter an exposed position, and what would be involved in establishing it, is for a qualified professional who has visited the site.
Note where you are considering a screen, fence or built shelter, and record that as a question for a qualified professional rather than a decision.
Anything raised in an exposed position takes wind pressure, and that is a matter for someone qualified to work it out.
The design and fixing of any screen or shelter structure in an exposed position is for a suitably qualified professional, with local requirements confirmed.
4.Drying wind, watering and getting planting to take hold
On an exposed site, wind takes water out of new planting faster than anyone expects. Establishment is the stretch where most schemes are won or lost.
Write down where the nearest outside tap is and how far a hose would have to reach to serve the most exposed new beds.
The most exposed bed is usually the furthest from water, and that combination is what quietly kills new planting.
Consider who would water while wind is drying the ground out, and whether that person tends to be away at exactly the point it would matter.
Losses trace back to absences far more often than to poor choices, and the gap is easy to plan around once admitted.
Ask what watering new planting will need here while it establishes, and get the answer in writing rather than relying on anyone to remember it.
The regime for an exposed site differs from a sheltered one, and a written answer survives changes of contractor and season.
Watering regimes for your conditions, and any irrigation to deliver them, are for a qualified professional to set out rather than a general rule.
Note whether loose material on the beds would simply blow away here, and ask what would be used instead before assuming mulch is straightforward.
Mulch that migrates is both a waste and a nuisance, and on exposed sites it ends up against the nearest wall.
Ask at what point in the year planting would be least demanding to establish here, and record the answer as their judgement rather than a rule.
Timing on an exposed site carries more weight than elsewhere, and it is the sort of judgement that should come from someone local.
Record any limitation on water use that applies where you live, and raise it before a scheme that depends on watering is agreed.
A scheme designed around watering that cannot happen is worse than one designed for the restriction from the outset.

5.Support and temporary protection while planting takes hold
Young planting on an exposed site often needs help early on. What that help is, and who removes it later, belongs in the agreement rather than in anyone's head.
Ask what support or temporary protection is proposed for new planting here, what it is fixed to and how long it is intended to stay.
Support that nobody planned to remove becomes a problem of its own, and the intention should be recorded at the outset.
Staking, tying and any support for trees is for a qualified professional to specify and for a qualified arborist to review as a tree matures.
Agree in writing who checks and eventually removes stakes, ties and guards, since the person who fitted them is rarely the person still around.
Forgotten ties are one of the most common causes of avoidable damage to established planting.
Any support fixed to a tree should be reviewed and released by a qualified arborist as the tree puts on growth.
Note whether temporary screening is proposed while planting establishes, and ask what it is fixed to and what happens to those fixings afterwards.
Temporary structures in wind carry real forces and often leave permanent marks on whatever they were tied to.
Record whether newly planted stock rocks visibly in the ground during a blow, and raise it promptly rather than waiting to see whether it settles.
Movement at the base is something an owner can see and a visitor cannot, and it is worth reporting while it can still be addressed.
Ask where plants would be held before going into the ground, and who is responsible for keeping them alive while they wait in the wind.
Stock left standing on a hard surface in an exposed spot deteriorates quickly, and responsibility for it is rarely stated unless asked.
Storage and handling of plant stock on site is the responsibility of the qualified professional supplying it; agree that before delivery is arranged.
Write down what else in the garden can be lifted or moved by wind, including furniture, covers, pots and stored materials near new planting.
Damage to young planting frequently comes from something that blew into it rather than from the wind itself.
6.Trees, boundaries and what has to be confirmed locally
Exposed sites often sit where extra local requirements apply. These prompts route those questions rather than answering them.
Note any existing tree that has lost limbs, leans further than it used to or shows a change at its base, and arrange for it to be looked at.
Trees on exposed sites accumulate damage that only becomes obvious after a storm, and owner observation is what triggers a proper look.
Tree condition after storm damage is for a qualified arborist to assess, with the local authority confirming what applies to that tree.
Ask what has to be confirmed with the local authority before any tree here is cut back, thinned or removed, and record who is doing the asking.
Assuming that exposure justifies tree work is a common and expensive mistake, and the check is straightforward to make first.
Write down whether your boundary adjoins a shoreline, dune, cliff, watercourse or open land, and raise what that means before planting or building anything there.
Boundaries of this kind frequently carry local requirements that have nothing to do with the garden itself.
What applies to planting or works near a shoreline, dune or watercourse is for the local authority and the relevant governing body to confirm.
Consider whether anything proposed could spread beyond the boundary into open ground, and raise it as a question before it is planted.
Spread into neighbouring land is far easier to prevent at the planning stage than to deal with once established.
Whether a plant may spread into adjoining habitat, and what restrictions apply, is a matter for a qualified professional and the local authority.
Record whether any shelter planting would block a view the household values, and settle that conflict before heights are proposed.
Shelter and outlook pull against each other on exposed sites, and the trade-off is better made deliberately than by accident.
Note whether your shelter depends on planting or structures belonging to a neighbour, and consider what your garden would face if it went.
Borrowed shelter is common and rarely acknowledged, and the exposure it hides is the exposure your planting would actually meet.
7.Losses, replacement and the honest expectation
Exposed sites lose plants. Agreeing in advance how that is handled keeps the relationship with a professional workable when it happens.
Ask directly what losses would be considered normal here and what would not, and record the answer in the words the professional used.
An honest answer given before planting is a far better guide than an explanation offered afterwards.
Ask on what basis anything lost to wind or salt would be made good, and what aftercare on your part that would depend on, then record the answer.
Arrangements usually depend on aftercare being carried out, which makes the aftercare instructions worth having in writing too.
Keep a dated note of what fails, where it stood and what the weather had been doing, since a pattern is only visible if it is written down.
A record of losses turns repeated disappointment into evidence that a professional can actually use.
Walk the garden after a hard blow and note movement at the base of plants, lifted edges and anything that has shifted, before tidying anything away.
Evidence disappears during clearing up, and the walk round is the only chance to capture what actually happened.
Agree who deals with storm damage to planting, who deals with structures and who is called for anything involving a tree.
Confusion about who to call is what leaves damage unattended, and the answer is easier to set down calmly in advance.
Damaged trees and any work at height are for a qualified arborist; damaged structures are for a suitably qualified professional.
Consider planting shelter before the planting it is meant to protect, and ask whether the scheme should be split that way here.
Order of work matters more on exposed sites than elsewhere, and it is a question owners rarely think to raise.

- Any record of past fence, structure or tree damage and where it happened
- Whatever you can gather about water use restrictions that apply where you live

Write these down in your own words, with the date, so everyone is working from the same version.
- Which beds are treated as fully exposed and which as sheltered enough to plant differently
- Whether shelter is being planted, built or both, and in what order the work happens
- How new planting is kept watered through a drying wind, and who was named to do it
- How the household balances shelter against a view it does not want blocked
- What level of loss you are prepared to accept before the approach is reconsidered
- At what point temporary protection gets reviewed, and who was named to review it

Blind spots
Commonly overlooked items
- Wind funnelled through a side passage or gateway rather than arriving across open ground
- Turbulence immediately behind a solid fence where people assumed there would be calm
- Shelter that belongs to a neighbour and could be removed without any warning
- Mulch and loose material blowing off the beds and piling against the nearest wall
- Guards and ties biting into stems on the most wind-battered planting of all
- Furniture and stored items lifted by wind into the newest and weakest planting
- Road treatments splashing onto the beds nearest the edge during cold weather
