1.Listing the equipment and where each item is used
Cleaning storage is usually planned around a vacuum cleaner and then meets everything else. Write the full list, including what lives on other floors.
List every piece of cleaning equipment you own, including the ones kept in other rooms, since these are the items that never appear in a cupboard drawing.
Most households own more cleaning equipment than they can name from memory, and the extras end up behind doors.
Note where each item is actually used, and mark anything used on a different floor from where it is currently kept.
Carrying a heavy machine up and down stairs is the reason it ends up parked on a landing permanently.
Decide whether some equipment is duplicated by floor rather than carried, and note what that means for how many stores you are planning.
Two smaller stores often work better than one large one, and that changes the brief completely.
Mark which items are reached for constantly and which are used rarely, such as a carpet cleaner or a window kit, so the good positions go to the right things.
Rarely used machines are bulky and usually occupy the most convenient spot in the cupboard.
Note the consumables you buy in quantity, such as cloths, refills, bags and rolls, and measure the space that stock actually takes.
Bulk stock is the category that overflows first and is almost never included in a cupboard brief.
Note any equipment shared with a neighbour, a relative or a cleaner, and say whether it needs to be reachable without going through the house.
Shared items need a location decided by access rather than by tidiness.
2.Upright machines, hoses and attachments that will not fold
The machine is easy to measure. The hose, the head and the attachments are what actually decide whether a cupboard works.
Measure each machine standing as it is stored, with the handle in the position it stays in, rather than measuring it collapsed for the box.
Machines that fold for packaging rarely stay folded in daily use, and the stored height is what matters.
Note how the hose and cable sit when the machine is put away, since a hose that will not stay wrapped needs depth that nobody allowed for.
Trailing hoses are the reason cupboard doors will not shut, and they are invisible in any specification.
Count the attachments, brushes and heads that go with each machine, and decide whether they hang, sit in a tray or stay clipped to the machine.
Loose attachments migrate around the house and are the first things to be lost after a move to new storage.
Measure the longest handled items, such as brooms, mops and a window pole, and note whether they can stand upright in the height available.
Long handles leaning in a corner are the usual failure, and they knock everything else over when moved.
Note which items nest inside each other, such as buckets and bowls, and which have to stand alone because of what is stored in them.
Nesting saves real space, but only when the contents are not stored inside the container.
Mark the genuinely heavy machines, and raise with the maker where they can sit, since a heavy item on a high shelf is awkward for whoever uses it.
Weight usually wants to be low and near the door of the cupboard rather than deep inside it.
Where a heavy machine may sit within a fitted store is for the maker to answer for that piece rather than something to settle by eye.
3.Wet cloths, mop heads and anything that must dry
Almost every cleaning cupboard smells because something wet was shut in it. Drying has to be provided for rather than hoped for.
List everything that goes away damp, including mop heads, cloths, sponges, brushes and buckets, and note what happens to each of them now.
Naming them makes it obvious that a closed cupboard cannot be the answer for all of them.
Decide where wet items dry before they are put away, and note whether that place is in the way of anything else in daily use.
Drying space competes with kitchen and utility surfaces, which is why wet items get put away damp.
Whether a cupboard can be given any air movement, and what that would involve, should be put to a qualified professional for your building.
Ask whether the proposed cupboard has any air movement at all, and raise it with the joiner or supplier before the doors are decided.
A ventilated detail is part of how a cupboard is made, and it cannot be added convincingly afterwards.
Note what would share the cupboard with damp items, such as paper goods, textiles or spare bedding, and decide whether that is acceptable.
Damp transfers to whatever is stored beside it, and paper goods show it first.
Note what the floor of the store is, and whether it copes with a wet bucket, a dripping mop or a machine brought in from outside.
Cupboard bases are often made of the same material as the shelves and are not intended to sit wet.
Note where cloths are washed and dried, and whether the store is anywhere near that route or on the other side of the house.
The distance between the store and the washing machine decides whether cloths get laundered at all.
4.Household products and what they must be kept away from
Cleaning products carry their own instructions. Your part is to note what you hold and where those instructions say it cannot go.
List the household products you actually keep, and read what each container says about how and where it should be kept.
The guidance is already printed on the products and is more reliable than any general storage principle.
How and where a particular product may be kept is set by its manufacturer and the relevant local requirements, confirmed locally.
Decide where products are kept relative to food, crockery and anything that goes near a mouth, and record that separation as a requirement.
Shared cupboards in kitchens are the usual arrangement and the one people most often want to change.
Note whether small children use the rooms concerned, and decide what that means for where products sit and whether the store needs to fasten.
Height alone is a weak arrangement once children climb, so this is worth deciding deliberately.
Any decision about restricting access to household products should follow the product guidance and, where needed, advice from a suitably qualified professional.
Note whether anything has been moved out of its original container, and treat returning it to a labelled container as part of tidying the store.
Unlabelled decanted product loses the very instructions that tell anyone how to handle it.
Note what would happen if a container leaked on the shelf where it sits, and decide whether it should stand in a tray rather than directly on the shelf.
Leaks are slow and usually found when the shelf below is already marked.
Note the products you no longer use, and take the question of how to dispose of them to your local waste service rather than deciding here.
Old products accumulate at the back of every cleaning cupboard because nobody knows what to do with them.
Disposal routes for household chemicals are set locally and must be confirmed with the relevant waste service.
5.Machines that live plugged in or on charge
Cordless equipment turned a cupboard into a charging point. That has to be planned with an electrician rather than solved with an extension lead.
List everything that charges, including a cordless vacuum, a window device, a robot machine and any handheld, and note where each one charges now.
The charging points that already exist tell you where the store realistically needs to be.
Raise with a qualified electrician whether an outlet inside the store is possible, rather than assuming a socket can simply be added there.
This is the single decision that determines whether cordless equipment can live in the cupboard at all.
Whether power can be brought into this store at all is for a qualified electrician to answer for your home before the cupboard is designed.
Note how each machine sits while charging, since some sit on a floor dock and some hang on a bracket, and the two need entirely different provision.
A wall bracket needs a wall that will take it, which is a separate question from where the socket goes.
If a robot machine is in use or planned, note where its base sits and what has to stay clear around it for the machine to come and go.
These bases need permanent floor space in a room rather than a place in a cupboard.
Keep the manufacturer instructions for battery equipment with the storage notes, and follow what they say about where and how charging happens.
Battery guidance often names conditions that rule out a warm or enclosed cupboard.
Battery equipment carries its own conditions from its maker, and those take precedence over whatever a cupboard layout would find convenient.
Note how cables are dealt with when a corded machine is put away, since a loose cable is what stops a door closing and gets damaged in the hinge.
Damaged cables are a reason to stop using a machine, so how it is put away matters.
6.Getting the machine out and putting it back again
Cleaning storage is judged on the moment of retrieval. Walk through that moment before agreeing to any arrangement.
Decide whether the machine can be taken out in one movement, or whether something else has to be moved first, and treat the second as a failure.
Anything requiring two movements is why the vacuum ends up living in the hall instead.
Note which way the store door opens and how much corridor it takes, since a door that blocks a passage is opened less often than one that does not.
In tight halls the door swing decides whether the cupboard is usable when someone else is passing.
Note any step, lip or threshold at the store, since a wheeled machine has to be lifted over it every single time.
Small thresholds are the difference between rolling a machine away and carrying it.
Note whether you can see into the store with the door open, and raise lighting with the electrician before the joinery is decided.
Deep cleaning cupboards are usually dark at the back, which is why the back is never used.
Consider how the machine goes back rather than how it comes out, since the return is where storage fails and the hallway parking begins.
Putting away is done in a hurry and with less patience than fetching.
If a machine has to be used on stairs, note where it is set down while working and whether the store makes that easier or harder.
Stairs are where cleaning is hardest, so the location of the store affects whether they get cleaned.
7.Who cleans, what they can lift, and where they start
Cleaning storage suits a particular person doing a particular routine. Describe that person rather than an idealised user.
Note who actually does the cleaning, including anyone who comes in to help, and design the brief around their reach and their routine.
A store arranged by someone who does not use it is the most common reason equipment migrates elsewhere.
Note whether the person cleaning can comfortably lift each machine, and mark anything that is currently dragged rather than carried.
Dragging damages both the machine and the floor, and it usually points at the wrong storage height.
Note where a cleaning routine begins and ends, and decide whether the store sits on that path or requires a detour at the start of every session.
A store on the route gets used, and a store off it becomes a place for things nobody wants.
Decide what is stored above comfortable reach, and be honest that a machine up there will not be brought down for an ordinary tidy up.
High storage suits refills and spares far better than it suits equipment.
Decide where machine instructions, spare filters and bags are kept, and note that keeping them with the machine is what makes them get used.
Filters go unchanged mainly because nobody can find the spares or the instructions.
Note whether anyone else, such as a family member or someone helping, needs to find the equipment without being shown, and label accordingly.
A store that only one person understands stops working the moment they are unavailable.

Having these to hand usually makes the first conversation shorter and more useful.
- A written list of cleaning equipment with the floor each item is used on
- Measurements of each machine as it is stored, including handle position and hose
- Measurements of the longest handled items such as brooms, mops and poles
- Manufacturer instructions for battery equipment and any machine that charges
- A note of the household products kept, with the guidance printed on each
- Photographs of where equipment currently ends up when it is not put away

Write these down in your own words, with the date, so everyone is working from the same version.
- Whether cleaning equipment is duplicated by floor or carried between them
- Where wet items dry before they are put away
- Whether the store needs an outlet for charging, to be raised with an electrician
- How household products are separated from food and from other stored goods
- The one item that must be retrievable in a single movement, and where it therefore sits
- Who the store is arranged for, and what they can comfortably lift and reach

Blind spots
Commonly overlooked items
- The hose and cable, which decide the depth far more than the machine body does
- Attachments and heads, which scatter through the house once they lose their place
- Bulk stock of cloths, refills and bags, which is rarely counted in a brief
- A step or lip at the cupboard, which means lifting the machine every time
- Where the mop head dries between uses rather than being shut in damp
- Spare filters and instructions, which are needed together and stored apart
