Excavating Beside an Existing Foundation

A strip foundation does not only rest on the ground beneath it. It relies on the ground beside it as well, and the reference entry says so plainly: later trenching alongside a strip removes support the strip was relying on. The drainage entry repeats the point from its own side.

This is the most ordinary way a building gets damaged. Nobody touches the wall. A trench is dug for a drain, a soakaway, an electricity supply, a garden wall footing or a new extension, and it goes past the corner of the house because that is where the route happens to run.

A footing leans on the ground around it, not only under it
