Weeps, Slots and Vents That Are Meant to Be Open

A small number of things in a finished building are supposed to be open, and every one of them looks like something that ought not to be. A gap in a mortar joint. A slot in the underside of a frame. A grille at the eaves. A narrow outlet on a roof that appears to be draining slowly. Each is doing work, none of it is labelled, and each is regularly closed by somebody trying to help.

The published records describe this happening in several different elements and always for the same reason. Weep openings are read as holes in the wall and filled in during repointing or decorating. Sealant applied over a drainage slot is thought to improve a facade. Eaves openings are blocked to stop draughts in a loft. A flow restriction is enlarged in the belief that the roof is draining poorly. In every case the person doing it believed they were correcting a defect.

Why they all look wrong
