Why Fire and Acoustic Behaviour Belong to a Tested Assembly

Every published envelope record in this library stops at the same place. Each of them describes how an assembly is organised, and each of them declines to state fire or acoustic performance, in almost identical language: performance of that kind is a property of a tested assembly, of the complete tested arrangement and its flanking construction, and of the relevant authority having jurisdiction. That is not a disclaimer appended to the end of a page. It is a statement about where the answer lives.

For a reader that has a practical consequence, because the difference between a question a description can answer and one it cannot is usually invisible. How to recognise a question a description cannot answer

The tell is the shape of the answer being asked for. A description can answer questions about arrangement: what is the structure, where is the nominated air line, which way do the laps run, what crosses the insulation, where does water leave. It cannot answer questions that ask for a period, a class, a rating or a level, because those are outcomes of a test carried out on a particular arrangement rather than properties of a layer order.
