- A freestanding structure and one tied into the building are two different structures rather than two ways of building the same thing, and which it is has to be settled at the start
- The gap is the idea, so a later lining, skirting or screed run across it makes a connection nobody designed
- The insertion gathers its loads into a few column positions on a floor never asked about concentrated load, so what lies beneath each one becomes design work
- Reversibility is a claim about how the thing is built, which is why what is fixed to what is worth recording as the work proceeds

- Set the gap wide enough to be seen and cleaned rather than only nominally open
