What metal ceiling tile is
A metal ceiling tile is a thin steel or aluminium sheet pressed or folded into a shallow tray, coated on the visible face and made either to a grid module or as a longer plank running in one direction. Hook on and clip in versions attach to carriers rather than laying loose, and open cell arrangements form a field of metal cells through which the zone above stays deliberately visible.
This is the real difference from a mineral fibre tile sharing the same module. Metal is not porous, so where absorption is wanted the tray is perforated and a separate fleece or mineral pad is laid inside it. Take the pad out and what remains is a perforated metal face doing very little. That separation of the visible face from the absorbent material is what makes the format rigid, demountable and wipeable in a way a fibre tile is not. Because the tray is rigid, its visual qualities are different too: crisp folded edges, flat planes, consistent coated colour and the option of long planks or open cell fields. - Acoustic behaviour
- Perforation lets sound reach a pad behind the tray, so absorption is a property of that backing and of the whole tested arrangement rather than of the metal. Anything that has to be relied upon should come from an acoustic professional.
- Appearance
- Coated metal gives even colour, sharp arrises and flat planes, and perforation patterns are visible as texture close to. Plank direction, cell size and the reveal at the edge of each tray are all deliberate design decisions.
- Surface wear
- A coated tray resists marking and wiping better than a porous fibre face, but it records dents and scratches permanently. Where trolleys, ladders and equipment reach the ceiling, that matters more than cleanability.
- Moisture behaviour
- Metal neither absorbs moisture nor sags as a fibre board does, but the steel behind the finish is what corrodes once damp reaches it through a scratch, a cut edge or a fixing, so the coating, the edges, the fixings and any backing pad govern behaviour in a humid or wash down setting. Aluminium behaves differently again, and product specific confirmation is needed either way.
