Overview

What baffles and rafts is

Baffles and rafts are separate suspended elements rather than a continuous ceiling. A baffle hangs as a vertical fin, usually in parallel rows and often quite deep, with both faces open to the room. A raft or cloud hangs horizontally as an island, frequently with a folded or framed edge, floating below the structure with a gap all the way around it.

Unlike a closed suspended ceiling or a panel fixed flat against a wall, these cover only part of the soffit on purpose. That is the reason they exist: exposed concrete, exposed steel and visible services can be kept on show and reachable while absorbent elements are introduced above head height. Both faces of a baffle are working surfaces, which is never true of something laid into a grid or fixed against a wall.

They are built in several ways, from mineral wool cores with fabric or fleece facings to pressed polyester felt, perforated metal trays with pads inside, and timber framed panels. Because each element hangs individually, the design conversation is about how much of the soffit is covered, how the elements are spaced and oriented, and how they read from below, rather than about a ceiling module.

Every element is hung individually from the soffit, so fixing positions, hanger type and levelling across a field of many elements are the practical heart of the job and are set out on a drawing.
Maintenance
Horizontal rafts collect dust on their upper faces where nobody sees it, and fabric or felt facings mark. Access equipment is usually needed for any cleaning, which is worth planning rather than discovering.
Substrate dependency
What the elements hang from is the governing constraint. A concrete soffit, a metal deck and a timber structure each demand different fixings, and confirmation belongs with a qualified professional.
Repairability
Individual elements can be taken down and replaced without touching the rest, which is a genuine advantage. Matching facing fabric and colour after a period of use is the harder part.
