Polyester Fibre Insulation Batt

Overview

What polyester insulation is

Polyester fibre insulation is made by opening out polyester fibres — commonly including fibre recovered from recycled bottle stock — laying them into a web and passing the web through heat so that a proportion of lower-melt fibre softens and bonds the rest together at their crossing points. Nothing else holds it together: there is no added resin binder, no formaldehyde-based adhesive and no mineral fibre in it at all. The bond is the polymer itself.

What arrives is a soft, resilient quilt supplied in batts or rolls, cut with shears or a knife, and fitted by compression between studs, joists and rafters in the same way as any other flexible batt. It recovers after being squashed, it does not shed a mineral fibre, and it is generally chosen where handling, itch and fibre release are the governing concerns rather than any other property.

It has to be kept separate from the moulded acoustic panel made from the same polymer. That product is compressed into a self-supporting board, coloured through the fibre, and made to be seen in a room as a wall tile, a baffle or a screen. This is a soft concealed quilt whose job is to fill a stud or joist bay completely and stay there. Same polymer, different product, different decision.
