Overview
What bitumen paint is
Bituminous protective paint is a black, bitumen-based liquid brushed or sprayed onto metal and concrete to leave a thin barrier film. It is a protective coating rather than a decorative one. The colour is a consequence of the binder rather than a choice, and it is used where appearance is secondary to keeping water and air off the surface.
It should not be confused with a liquid-applied roof coating, which is a waterproofing membrane built up across a whole roof area, detailed at upstands and outlets, and expected to accommodate movement. Bituminous paint is a localised protective film for items such as gutter interiors, tanks, cast iron, buried steelwork and the backs of retaining structures. It carries no membrane function.
Its defining practical characteristic is that bitumen bleeds. Solvents in a coating applied over it can redissolve the film and pull a brown or black stain through the new paint, sometimes long after the work appears finished. Anything applied over bituminous paint therefore has to be selected on the basis of the overcoating product's own documentation.

Key properties to discuss
Qualitative topics worth raising. Measured values, classes and grades come from the manufacturer's technical documentation for the specific product, not from a reference page.
- Substrate dependency
- The film is only as good as the metal or concrete beneath it. Rust scale, laitance, dust and residual oil all prevent adhesion, and preparation does more for the outcome than the choice of product.
- Moisture behaviour
- This is a barrier film rather than a tanking system. Whether a structure stays dry depends on the whole assembly, its drainage and its detailing, and no isolated coating should be relied on for that.
- Weathering and exposure
- Exposed bitumen films soften in heat and craze under ultraviolet exposure over time. A coating inside a shaded gutter and the same coating on a sunlit face do not age in the same way.
- Appearance
- The finish is black, with sheen varying by formulation. It is chosen for places where it will not be seen, and changing the colour of the element afterwards is genuinely difficult.
- Repairability
- Local damage can generally be recoated with the same material, which is why it survives in maintenance use. Building a different coating system over it is the difficult case, not repairing it.
- Maintenance
- Gutter interiors and buried items are inspected rarely, so the practical maintenance question is how the coated element will be reached at all, and by whom.
- Documentation
- Ask for the manufacturer's statement of intended service, permitted substrates and overcoating, because products in this family vary far more than the uniform black finish suggests.
Exposure

- Will the coated surface be permanently wet, intermittently wet or buried, and is the product documented for that condition?
- Is the element exposed to sunlight, where softening and surface crazing become relevant over time?
- Does the item ever come into contact with drinking water, food or planting, and what does the manufacturer say?
- Is the work inside a confined space such as a tank or a duct, and what does that mean for those applying it?
- Will backfill, ground water or chemical contact reach the coating once the element is buried?

What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.
- Ferrous metal needs its corrosion products dealt with first, and the coating neither converts nor neutralises rust.
- Fresh concrete and cement render behave differently from mature substrates and may need assessment before coating.
- Where the element forms part of a below-ground damp strategy, the coating is one layer among membranes, drainage and detailing.
- Joints, laps, fixings and edges are where a thin brushed film is thinnest and where problems usually begin.
- If the substrate already carries an unknown coating, that coating governs what can be applied over it.

- The material is black, and that is a consequence of the binder rather than a selectable property.
- Sheen varies between products and can change again as the film ages and weathers in place.
- Brush marks and runs show on flat exposed faces, which is one reason it is kept to concealed elements.

- Does movement in the substrate exceed what a thin brittle film can reasonably follow?
- How will this coating interact with any other protective measure already present on the metal?

- Can the same product be reapplied later, and is that the assumed maintenance route for this element?
- How will anyone know the coating has failed if the element is buried or inside a gutter?
- If the element must eventually be decorated, how is the bitumen going to be dealt with?
- What preparation does a repair need, and does that differ from the original work?
- Who records that this element carries a bituminous coating, so a future trade is not caught out by it?

- Bitumen bleeding through later decoration is the most common complaint, and it can appear long after handover.
- A protective paint is not a membrane, and describing it as waterproofing sets entirely the wrong expectation.
- Splashes on brick, stone and paving are effectively permanent and are rarely masked against.
- Work inside gutters and tanks is confined-space work before it is decorating work.
- The coating often outlives the record of it, leaving a future trade to discover it the hard way.
