Soft Distemper and Glue Bound Interior Paint

Overview

What distemper is

Soft distemper is whiting, finely ground chalk, bound with animal glue size and carried in water, sometimes tinted with earth pigments. The binder is weak by design. The dried coating is a loosely bound layer of chalk sitting on the surface, which is why it gives a soft, powdery, light scattering white unlike anything a modern paint produces.

It is regularly assumed to be an old word for emulsion, and it is not. Emulsion leaves a plastic film that resists water and is meant to stay put. Distemper is not washable, marks readily, and can be softened and taken off again with water. That reversibility is the whole reason it survives: successive schemes can be removed rather than accumulated, so cornices, ceiling roses and modelled plaster stay crisp instead of slowly clogging.

Two related materials share the name and should not be confused with it. Oil bound water paint, sometimes called hard or washable distemper, contains an oil or resin component and behaves quite differently. Limewash is a lime binder that carbonates. Soft distemper has neither, and any decision about overcoating depends on knowing which of the three is actually on the ceiling.

Key properties to discuss

Appearance
The finish is exceptionally matt and slightly grainy, scattering light in a way that flattens shadows on modelled plaster. It is the reason the material is still specified for enriched ceilings and cornices.
Surface wear
The coating marks, burnishes and rubs off in ordinary use. This is inherent to a weak binder and is not a defect in the product, but it does decide which rooms it belongs in.
Moisture behaviour
The dried film is softened by water. That is the mechanism behind its reversibility and also the reason it has no place in rooms that see splashing, steam or wiping down.
Substrate dependency
It is applied over absorbent plaster surfaces. What is already there governs everything, because distemper over a modern film paint, and modern paint over distemper, are two different problems.
Repairability
Local repairs rarely disappear, since the surface reflects light so evenly that a patch shows. Whole surface redecoration after removal is the usual approach in conservation work.
Maintenance
There is no washing regime for this material. Upkeep is a matter of removing the existing coating and recoating, which is exactly what its reversibility is for.
Documentation
What is on the ceiling should be established and written down, because the next decorator will otherwise assume emulsion and prepare the surface accordingly.

  • Does the room suffer condensation, and has the cause been dealt with before decoration is considered?

What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.

  • The existing coating must be identified, because emulsion applied over soft distemper is a known route to adhesion failure.
  • Absorbent lime or gypsum plaster in sound condition is the usual background, and loose or friable surfaces change the picture.
  • Fibrous plaster enrichment and run cornices have deep undercuts where accumulated paint changes the profile.
  • Ceilings with a history of movement or cracking need their repairs finished before any decorative decision is made.

  • The white of whiting is a soft warm white rather than the bright white of modern titanium based paint.
  • Pigmented versions sit in a restrained earth range, which suits period schemes and frustrates modern colour cards.
  • Because the surface is so matt, small differences in plaster texture show more than they would under emulsion.
  • Sheen contrast with adjacent oil painted joinery is strong, and that contrast is usually the intended period effect.

  • Is anyone expecting this finish to survive handling and cleaning, and has that expectation been corrected?
  • How long is the surface expected to look acceptable before it is redecorated, and who decides?
  • What will happen at the junction with walls that carry a modern washable finish?
  • If the room changes use, is there an agreed plan for changing the finish with it?

Upkeep

Maintenance and repair considerations

  • Is removal before redecoration understood as part of the cycle rather than an unexpected extra?
  • Who holds the record of what coating is present, and where is that record kept?
  • How will accidental marks be handled in the meantime, given that touching in tends to show?
  • If a later occupier applies emulsion over it, what is the likely consequence and how is that warned against?
  • Is a specialist decorator needed here rather than a general painting contractor?

What the installation depends on — not how to do it. Method belongs to the manufacturer's instructions and the trades carrying out the work.

  • Removal of the previous scheme, where that is intended, is a specialist operation that belongs with the conservation approach.
  • Working conditions and the sequence of application vary by product and preparer, and belong in their own documentation.
  • Protection of floors and fittings matters because the material is watery and the removal process wetter still.
  • The condition and dryness of plaster repairs governs when decoration can sensibly follow them.

Commonly overlooked points

  • Modern film forming paint applied over soft distemper is a recognised cause of adhesion failure, and it is discovered late.
  • The word distemper is used loosely in the trade for at least three different materials with different behaviour.
  • Occupiers reasonably assume any painted ceiling can be wiped, and nobody tells them otherwise.
  • The soft warm white does not match a modern brilliant white, which surprises people at the junction with new work.
  • Removing an old scheme can reveal plaster defects that were being held together by the paint layers.
