Mastic Asphalt Roof Waterproofing

Overview
What mastic asphalt roofing is
Mastic asphalt is a dense mixture of bitumen binder and graded mineral matter that is heated until it flows and is then spread by hand with a wooden float. It is not rolled out, not bonded with adhesive and not welded: it is poured and worked, and when it cools it is one continuous body of material with no seams anywhere in the field of the roof. That is the property everything else follows from.
The roofing grade is laid over a loose-laid sheathing felt isolating layer rather than directly onto the deck. The purpose of that layer is separation: the deck may move, shrink and deflect, and the asphalt is deliberately not stuck to it, so movement below is not transmitted straight into the waterproofing above. It is applied in successive coats with the joints in each coat staggered against the one beneath, which is how a poured material achieves continuity.
The perimeter is where the trade shows. Upstands and skirtings are formed in the material itself and dressed up against parapets, kerbs and walls; an angle fillet is worked into the internal corner so the material is never asked to turn a sharp angle; and the top of a skirting is tucked into a chase or held under a flashing. Outlets, pipes and kerbs are dressed rather than flashed with a separate accessory.
Exposed asphalt is normally finished rather than left bare: a reflective surface treatment, a mineral dressing, or a separate protective layer of paving, ballast or a deck laid over it. That protection is part of the design of the roof, not an optional addition, because the surface is soft when warm. This is also the point at which the roofing grade parts company with the flooring grade of the same material, where the trowelled surface is itself the thing walked on.
