PVC Single-Ply Roofing Membrane

What pvc single-ply membrane is
A PVC roofing membrane is a sheet of polyvinyl chloride that has been made flexible by plasticiser, normally carried on a reinforcing scrim between two layers of the compound. Like the thermoplastic polyolefin membrane already published, it is welded rather than bonded: hot air softens the facing surfaces of two overlapping sheets so that they fuse and cool as one material, and the completed weld can be probed once cool. To that extent the two behave alike on site.
What separates them is the plasticiser, and it is not a detail. Plasticiser is a mobile constituent: it can migrate out of the sheet into materials in direct contact with it, and it can be drawn out by materials that absorb it. Bitumen, expanded and extruded polystyrene, some sealants and some preservative-treated timber are the contacts most often named in system documentation. Where the membrane would meet any of them, a separating layer is the normal arrangement rather than an optional precaution, and that single fact shapes most of the build-up decisions around the sheet.
The same chemistry has an advantage that the roofing trade uses constantly. PVC laminates readily onto thin metal sheet, so coated metal flashing material in the same compound is a standard part of the family: drip edges, gutter and kerb trims, and formed corners are made from it and welded into the covering rather than sealed to it. Preformed corners, pipe collars and internal and external angles are welded in the same way.
The finished covering is a continuous welded surface, commonly light in colour on the exposed face, secured to the build-up by adhesive bonding, by mechanical fixing at the laps, or by ballast over it. Which of those is used is a design decision for the particular roof, taken from the deck upwards, rather than a property of the material.

- Seams are made with heat, so the welder, the settings and the conditions on the day are part of the result. Welds are commonly probed once cool, which gives a means of checking the joint that a bonded seam does not offer.
- Moisture behaviour
- The field is a continuous welded surface, so risk concentrates at the terminations, the outlets and anything passing through the covering. The complete assembly, not the sheet, is what keeps water out of the building.

- Repairs are welded into the covering over a cleaned and prepared surface, so a patch joins the sheet rather than sitting on top of it. Weathered surfaces need cleaning before they will weld, and that step is easy to underestimate.
- Weathering and exposure
- The exposed face weathers under sunlight and the compound and any surface treatment vary between products. How a particular membrane behaves over time belongs to the manufacturer's documentation rather than to a general statement.
- Maintenance
- Debris around outlets, damage from later work on the roof, and the condition of terminations and welded flashings are the recurring subjects. Light-coloured surfaces show soiling and biological growth far more plainly than dark ones.
- Appearance
- Welded seams, laminated metal trims and welded flashings read as lines across the surface when the roof is looked down upon, and the membrane follows whatever it is laid over.
- Documentation
- The system documentation covers the sheet, the accessories, what it may be laid over, the separating layers it calls for, the materials it should be kept apart from, and how seams are made and then checked.

- This is not the same material as the other welded single ply in the library: the plasticiser is the difference and it changes what the sheet may touch.
- Separating layers over bitumen and over certain insulations are routine here, not an unusual extra to be negotiated away.
- A sealant or adhesive brought in from outside the system is a compatibility question, and it is asked before it is used.
- A weld can be probed and checked, which is an advantage only if somebody actually does it.
- Light-coloured roofs look markedly different after a few seasons of dirt and growth have settled on them.
