What wall protection is
Wall protection is a family of surface-mounted components: horizontal rails at handrail or trolley height, flat protection sheets on lower wall areas, and angles or profiles fitted over external corners. They are made in plastics, metals and composites, and are fixed over a wall that has already been finished, so they sit proud of it and read as applied elements.
They are not a wall finish. The finish is whatever is behind them, and the protection is a component of the wider assembly whose job is to take damage instead of that finish. Being sacrificial is the point: a scuffed rail or a dented corner angle can be unfixed and replaced without touching the plaster, paint or lining underneath.
This is the distinction from plaster beads and edge profiles, which are embedded within the plaster and become part of it. A bead cannot be replaced without breaking out the finish around it; a corner guard is removed with its fixings.
