Overview

What plaster beads is

A plaster bead is a thin formed profile fixed to the background before the wet finish goes on, so that the finish is worked up to it and it disappears into the surface. Angle beads form external corners, stop beads give a clean termination where plaster meets another material, and movement profiles let a large area of finish break at a controlled line rather than wherever it chooses.

They are made in galvanised steel, in stainless steel, in PVC, and in mesh-winged forms for lightweight work. The wings are perforated or expanded so the finish passes through and locks around them, while the nose or the return forms the visible line. The nose is also the part that takes the knocks, which is why the material of the profile is the decision that matters most.

The confusion worth clearing up is with decorative trim. Skirtings, architraves and panel mouldings are joinery fixed over a finished wall, and they can be removed and replaced without touching the plaster. A bead sits inside the finish. Once the plaster has set around it the profile can only be changed by cutting the surface open, and a corroding bead will stain and blow the finish from behind long before anyone sees the metal itself.

Substrate dependency
The bead is fixed to the background and then buried, so the background decides how it is held and whether it stays where it was set. A profile bedded into a lightweight or friable surface will move, and the line moves with it.
Moisture behaviour
Water reaching a buried ferrous profile corrodes it from behind, and the expanding corrosion product pushes the finish off the wall. This is why the metal specified matters far more than the shape of the nose.
Weathering and exposure
External profiles work in a wetting and drying cycle and often at the base of a wall where splash and salts collect. The exposure of the specific position is what should drive the choice, rather than a general habit of specification.
Surface wear
The nose of an angle bead is the part of a room that gets hit, by trolleys, luggage, furniture and shoulders. How that nose behaves after repeated impact is a fair question to ask before it is buried in plaster.
Appearance
Bead choice sets whether a corner reads as a crisp arris, a softened radius or a deliberate shadow line. It is one of the few components that is entirely hidden yet completely determines what the finished room looks like.
Installation dependency
Beads are set out and levelled before the finish is applied, so their line is the finished line. There is no later opportunity to correct a profile that was fixed out of plumb or out of true.
Documentation
Ask for the profile material and grade in writing along with a schedule of where each type occurs. Once the wall is finished nobody can tell a galvanised bead from a stainless one by looking at it.

  • Is the surface internal, external, or in a location that will be regularly wetted or washed down?
  • Is the building near the coast or otherwise in a corrosive atmosphere that would change the metal specified?
  • Will the beaded edge be exposed to salts from a de-icing or cleaning regime at low level?
  • Is the wall a cold surface where condensation could form and sit behind the finish?
  • Does the position take impact from trolleys, luggage, doors or furniture in normal daily use?

What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.

  • How the bead is held matters, whether fixed mechanically, bedded in a dab of the finish or both, and the background decides that.
  • The bead sets the finished plane, so any error in its line is repeated along the whole length of the arris.
  • Where two different backgrounds meet, a bead does not remove the movement, and a profile made for the break is a different product.
  • Bead depth has to suit the intended build-up of the finish, which is a matter for the person specifying the system.
  • External render profiles depend on what happens at the base of the wall and where water is meant to leave the surface.

  • The nose of the bead defines the crispness of the corner, and a sharper profile reads very differently from a softened arris.
  • PVC and metal noses take coatings differently, and a visible line can appear where paint sits over the profile.

  • A bead that has been over-filled disappears, while one that has been under-filled shows as a hard ridge under raking light.

  • How will the profile behave if the background moves seasonally with heating and humidity?

  • If a corner is chipped, can it be filled locally, or does the profile itself need to be replaced?
  • Is rust staining appearing along a corner line, and has anyone opened up the finish to see why?
  • Are spare profiles of the same type available so a later repair matches the rest of the building?
  • Who will be responsible for touching up the coating over a repaired arris so the line is not visible?
  • How much of the surrounding finish has to be disturbed in order to change a single length of bead?

  • Beads are set out and levelled before any finish is applied, so setting-out errors cannot be corrected afterwards.
  • Lengths, joints and mitres at corners are planned in advance, because a joint in the middle of a visible arris is permanent.
  • Fixings must suit the background, and the wrong fixing in a lightweight background will simply not hold the line.

  • A bead cannot stop a crack caused by movement in the background; it can only form and tidy an edge.
  • Mixing profile materials in one building makes later repairs harder, because the replacement never quite matches.
  • The line of a bead is the line the eye follows down a corridor, so alignment matters more than the size of the component.
