Ceiling Perimeter Trim

Explains the ceiling perimeter as a designed junction between two surfaces built by different trades to different tolerances, rather than as the place a ceiling simply stops.

What a perimeter trim is

A ceiling perimeter trim is the length fixed along the wall at ceiling level that closes the edge of the ceiling. In a demountable ceiling it also provides the bearing that the edge tiles and the ends of the grid members sit on. It is met as an angle, a channel, a shadow-gap section or a concealed bearer, and the choice between those is what determines how the junction reads from the room.

Its significance is that the perimeter is where a ceiling meets a surface built by someone else, to different tolerances, and commonly out of line with the ceiling module. The trim is what absorbs that difference. It is also where the ceiling plane is either sealed to the wall or deliberately held clear of it, and that decision matters wherever the ceiling forms part of a separating or fire-resisting arrangement.

  • It is not a ceiling grid tee. A tee is a bearer within the field of the ceiling and carries tiles on both sides; the perimeter trim closes that field at the wall and carries the edge on one side only.
  • It is not a cornice or coving. Fibrous plaster mouldings are a published material entry and are a decorative treatment applied over the wall-to-ceiling junction; the perimeter trim is the element that forms and closes the junction itself.
  • It is not a plaster bead. Plaster beads and edge profiles are a published material entry that terminates a plastered surface and gives it an arris; they answer the same edge in a jointless ceiling rather than in a modular one, and they carry nothing.

Clarifications

Commonly misunderstood

  • That the perimeter is a trim in the decorative sense. It is commonly the bearing for the edge of the ceiling, and where the ceiling is sealed it is part of what makes that ceiling continuous.
  • That any perimeter detail suits any ceiling. A shadow gap leaves the edge deliberately open, which is a different decision from closing the ceiling tight against the wall.
