About this category

Concrete is a published material, but the things that decide how a concrete element behaves are mostly not material choices: they are positions. Where one pour stops and the next begins, how far reinforcement sits from the surface, where bars overlap, and what the concrete was cast against all shape the result, and none of them is a property of the mix.

These entries explain each position and what it depends on. They state no cover, lap length, pour sequence, bar size or strength: every one of those is a structural design value, and this library sets none of them.

What this category covers, and what it does not

  • Covers positions within cast concrete work: joints between pours, reinforcement laps, the cover zone, cast-in starters and kickers, the forming face, and tendon anchorage positions.
  • Does not cover the concretes, reinforcement, admixtures or waterstops themselves, which are published material entries.
  • Does not cover concrete SYSTEMS — frames, rafts, slabs, insulating formwork and water-resisting construction are building systems.
  • States no cover, lap length, bar size, pour size, strength class or striking time, and makes no structural determination.
