Construction Joint

Overview
What a construction joint is
Concrete is placed in pours, and a pour has to end somewhere. A construction joint is the plane at which one pour was stopped and against which the next was cast. It exists because work is carried out in stages — by day, by bay, by lift, by what can be placed and finished in one continuous operation — and not because the design wanted a break at that point.
What makes it significant is the intention attached to it: the finished element is meant to behave as though the joint were not there. Force, and often water resistance, has to carry across a plane where fresh concrete met concrete that had already hardened. That is why the position of a construction joint is a matter for the designer rather than only for the programme, and why the treatment of the surface, and the reinforcement crossing it, are part of what the joint is.

- It is not a movement joint. A movement joint is a deliberate discontinuity provided so parts of a construction can move relative to each other; a construction joint is where work stopped and restarted and is intended to act as continuous. The two are opposite intentions at a similar-looking line, and treating one as the other is the error this entry exists to prevent. The physical tell is the reinforcement: a construction joint is normally crossed by continuous reinforcement because it is meant to act as one member, while a movement joint is deliberately free of anything restraining the movement it exists to permit. This also covers the sawn or formed contraction joint in a slab, which is a movement joint under a third name and not a pour break.
- It is not a waterstop. A waterstop is a procured product placed within a joint through concrete that has to resist water; the joint is the position it sits in. A joint may be formed with no waterstop at all, and a waterstop that has been displaced during the pour does not stop the joint from existing.
- It is not a crack, and not the unintended joint that forms when concrete is left too long between layers. Those are conditions that arose; a construction joint is a location chosen in advance, prepared, and cast against.

Force does not recognise the programme. Whatever the element was carrying across that plane before the break still has to be carried across it afterwards, which is why the position is a design decision and not purely a site one.

Joint positions are commonly where the programme and the design negotiate. A break that fits the plant and the working day may not be a break the designer has allowed, and the resolution belongs to the designer.
A joint intended to act as continuous still sits where the concrete each side was cast at different ages, and differential shrinkage across that plane is one of the reasons a construction joint can become visible on a finished face without having failed.

- That a construction joint is a weakness to be avoided. Every element larger than a single pour has them; what matters is that they fall where the design allows and are formed as the design assumed.
- That a joint visible on a finished surface is necessarily a movement joint. A visible line can be either, and the difference is what it was intended to do rather than what it looks like.
