Overview

What a deck joist is

Deck joists span between bearers or supports and carry the decking boards. Structurally they do what a floor joist does: span, carry, and deliver load to supports.

What makes them a distinct element is the environment. They are outdoors, wetted repeatedly, and their top surface sits directly beneath a gapped deck through which water passes onto them and then sits there. That single condition governs almost everything about how they are specified and how long they last.
