Thermally Modified Timber

Overview
What thermally modified timber is
Thermally modified timber is ordinary timber that has been heated to high temperatures in a chamber with the oxygen largely excluded, usually with steam or another shielding medium present, following a controlled schedule of heating, holding and cooling. Nothing is added to the wood; the process changes the wood itself.
The heating alters the sugars and other components within the cell walls, which reduces the wood's tendency to take up moisture from the surrounding air. Boards therefore move less as humidity changes, and the material becomes less attractive to the organisms that decay untreated timber. The colour darkens right through the section, so it is not a surface coating that can wear off.
The trade-off is the part that gets forgotten. The same changes that reduce moisture uptake typically make the timber more brittle and less tolerant of bending and impact, and fixings can split it if it is handled like unmodified wood. That is a completely different mechanism from preservative treatment, where chemicals are introduced into the timber and the wood substance itself is left as it was.

- Positions exposed to knocks and impact, such as low-level cladding beside a path or next to a busy doorway.
- Ground contact or permanently saturated situations, which the process is generally not intended to address.
- Uses where the fixing pattern and the detailing would follow habit rather than the supplier's guidance.
- Situations where an eventual weathered grey appearance would be unacceptable and no maintenance is planned.

Qualitative topics worth raising. Measured values, classes and grades come from the manufacturer's technical documentation for the specific product, not from a reference page.
- Moisture behaviour
- Reduced moisture uptake is the whole point of the process: boards swell and shrink less with humidity than the same species untreated. That does not make the timber impervious, and the detailing still has to let water drain away and let the boards dry.
- Appearance
- The colour change runs through the section rather than sitting on the surface, so cut ends and machined faces show the same tone. Left outdoors without a finish, the surface still weathers towards grey while the interior stays dark.
- Installation dependency
- Because the material is more brittle, pre-drilling and the choice and placing of fixings follow the supplier's guidance rather than habit. Splitting at board ends is the usual sign that it has been handled like unmodified timber.
- Weathering and exposure
- Ultraviolet light changes the surface regardless of the modification, and coatings are used where the original tone is to be retained. How often that needs refreshing depends on orientation, exposure and the product chosen.
- Repairability
- Individual boards can usually be replaced, though a replacement will not match weathered surroundings for some time. Splits and impact damage are not readily repaired in a way that becomes invisible.
- Maintenance
- Cleaning and renewal of any finish are the recurring tasks. What is appropriate varies between products and processes, so the supplier's guidance is the reference rather than general timber practice.
- Fire-related questions
- Whether thermal modification changes fire behaviour, and in which direction, is a product-specific question for the manufacturer's documentation and for the project's fire strategy rather than a general one.
Exposure
Exposure and environmental conditions
- Is the timber fully exposed, sheltered under an overhang, or internal, and has the product been chosen for that?
- Will any part of it be in contact with the ground, with paving, or with water that stands after rain?
- How does the detailing shed water off the boards and allow the back face to dry between wettings?
- How much direct sun does this elevation receive, since that largely drives the pace of surface weathering?
- Is the material going anywhere it is likely to be kicked, knocked, leaned on or climbed over?
Assembly
Substrate and system dependencies
What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.
- Battens, cavities and ventilation behind cladding matter here just as much as with any other timber boarding.
- Fixings are chosen for compatibility with the timber and with the exposure, and are specified rather than assumed.
- Movement at board ends and at junctions still has to be allowed for, even though overall movement is reduced.
- How far apart the supports behind the boards sit is a design question, because the bending behaviour differs from untreated timber.
- Where the boards meet other materials, run-off and staining in either direction are considered at the detailing stage.
Appearance
Appearance and finish considerations
- The initial dark, even tone is one of the main reasons the material is chosen, and it will change once outdoors.
- Whether the surface is allowed to silver naturally or kept dark with a finish is a decision made at the outset.
- Depth of colour varies between products and processes, so samples of the actual product are the only reliable guide.
- Cut ends match the face because the colour runs through the section, which is a genuine practical advantage.
- Machining marks and surface texture read strongly on a dark board under raking light across an elevation.

Questions to raise rather than a service life to expect. No material has a universal lifespan — it depends on the assembly, the exposure and the upkeep.
- What has the supplier said about the situations and exposures this particular product is made for?
- How is the timber kept out of prolonged contact with water at its most vulnerable points?
- What does the supplier say about brittleness, and how has the design allowed for it?
- How will the material behave where it is fixed through, given that splitting is the usual failure?
- What happens at the base of a cladding run, or at the end of a deck board, where wetting is worst?
Upkeep
Maintenance and repair considerations
- What cleaning is appropriate for this product, and what does the supplier say should be avoided?
- If a coating is used, how often will it need attention and how is access to it arranged?
- Are spare boards from the same batch being kept for later replacement of damaged pieces?
- How would a split, an impact mark or a broken board edge be dealt with once the work is complete?
Installation

What the installation depends on — not how to do it. Method belongs to the manufacturer's instructions and the trades carrying out the work.
- The supplier's fixing guidance is central here, because the material tolerates less than unmodified timber does.
- Handling and storage on site matter, since more brittle material is easier to damage before it is ever fixed.
- Cutting and machining produce fine dust, and the supplier's handling guidance covers what that means.
- Board layout, end fixings and support positions are set out in the design rather than resolved by the fixer.
- Compatibility between the fixings, any metal trims and the timber is checked before anything is ordered.

Ask for these in writing, for the specific product being proposed, and keep them with the project record.
- The supplier's description of the process used and the situations the product is intended for.
- Fixing guidance, including anything the supplier says about pre-drilling and about fixing positions.

- Information on the species used and its origin, where the project has requirements about that.

- Is this material being used anywhere it carries load or takes impact, and is that appropriate here?

- Is the design allowing the timber to weather naturally, or is a finish going to be maintained instead?

Commonly overlooked points
- Thermal modification is not a preservative treatment, yet the two are frequently discussed as though interchangeable.
- Brittleness is the practical consequence people meet first, usually as splitting around fixings near board ends.
- The dark colour will not stay dark outdoors unless a finish is applied and then kept up over time.
- Reduced movement is not the same as no movement, and the detailing still has to allow for it.
- Off-cuts and dust behave differently from untreated timber, and the supplier's guidance covers handling and disposal.
