Raised Floor Panel

Overview

What a floor panel is

A raised floor panel is one of the discrete units that make up the deck of an access floor. Each panel spans between the supports at its corners or edges and is laid rather than fixed, so it can be lifted out to reach the void below. Panels are commonly supplied with a finish already bonded to them, or are laid and then covered with a loose-laid finish that lifts with them.

The two duties pull against each other, and that tension is the whole of what makes the panel interesting. It has to behave as a floor — carrying what is put on it without noticeable deflection and without rocking — and it has to stay removable, which means it cannot be fixed down and is only as stable as its supports and the accuracy of its fit.

  • It is not a structural deck. A structural deck is a continuous spanning plane belonging to the building's structure and is never intended to be lifted; a raised floor panel is a discrete unit laid on supports above such a deck.
  • It is not raised access flooring as a product. That is a published material entry covering the proprietary panel and support assemblies; the panel is the position within such a floor, and what fills it varies in core, edge and finish.
  • It is not a floating floor layer. A floating layer is continuous and is separated from the structure by a resilient material to control impact sound; a raised floor panel is discrete, liftable, and sits on rigid supports over an open void.

Tolerance & fit

An access floor is a grid of loose units, so lipping, rocking and uneven joint widths are its characteristic defects and they are decided at setting-out rather than at installation.

Maintenance & access

The reason for the floor is that panels lift, so anything that stops one lifting — a partition landing on it, a bonded finish across the joints, a fixed item — removes access at that point.

Structural transfer

Everything on a panel is carried to its supports at the edges or corners, which is a different load path from a continuous deck bearing on the structure throughout.
