Overview

What a structural deck is

A structural deck is the continuous surface spanning across joists, beams or purlins. It carries the load applied to it into those members, and it distributes point loads so that one joist does not take everything applied above it.

It is also the base for everything above: screeds, insulation, waterproofing and finishes all rely on it being continuous, adequately flat and stiff enough that they are not asked to bridge movement.

  • It is not a floor finish. The finish is what is walked on; the deck is the structural plane beneath it.
  • It is not a joist. Joists span in one direction at intervals; the deck spans across them and makes the surface continuous.

  • It is not profiled metal decking as a product. That is a published material entry; the deck is the position it can occupy.

Acoustic

A deck fixed rigidly to joists transmits impact sound into the structure, which is why separating floors introduce isolation above it.
