Overview
What profiled metal decking is
Profiled metal decking is thin steel coil, normally zinc-coated before forming, roll-formed into a ribbed profile so that a light sheet gains stiffness from its shape rather than from its thickness. The profile is what does the work: folding the sheet gives it depth, which is the same principle that lies behind profiled roof sheeting and cold-formed framing sections. How far a particular deck will span, and what it carries while it does, are engineering decisions rather than properties of the profile.
In floors it usually acts as permanent formwork to a concrete slab. In composite decking the ribs carry embossments or shaped folds so that the steel and the hardened concrete act together rather than as two separate layers. In roofs it is more often a structural deck carrying insulation, a vapour control layer and a covering above it, with the underside sometimes left visible as the ceiling below.
Two things distinguish it from a plain sheet. The coating goes onto the coil before profiling, so every cut end and site-drilled hole is bare steel and needs the specified treatment. And the underside is frequently the finished ceiling, so handling marks, fixings, concrete splashes and service penetrations all remain on view. Whether temporary propping is needed while concrete cures follows from the design rather than from the product.

- Substrate dependency
- Decking is only half of a floor. What sits above it, whether a concrete slab or insulation and a covering, and how the two are connected, is what actually determines how the finished assembly behaves.
- Installation dependency
- Sheets are set out, fixed down to the supporting beams and joined along their side laps, and the sequence matters because the first sheets set the line that everything after them follows.
- Moisture behaviour
- The coating on the coil is intended for a defined range of environments. Persistent condensation on the soffit, or an aggressive internal atmosphere below, are the situations that need reviewing before the deck is chosen.
- Appearance
- Where the underside is left visible, the profile, the fixings, the side laps and the edge trims all become part of the ceiling, and untidy work at that stage cannot be hidden later.
- Acoustic behaviour
- Sound behaviour depends on the complete floor or roof build-up, including any concrete, insulation, ceiling and services zone, rather than on the deck profile considered by itself.
- Repairability
- Deck is not readily replaced once concrete has been cast on it, so damage is dealt with before the pour. A roof deck can be more accessible, but is normally covered by the roof build-up above.
- Documentation
- Layout drawings, fixing schedules and the coating specification tell you what has actually been supplied and what conditions it was selected for, which a generic description of decking cannot.
Exposure
Exposure and environmental conditions
- Is the space below humid, such as a pool hall, commercial kitchen or wet process area?
- Could condensation form on the soffit in cold weather with the planned build-up?
- Will the deck be open to weather during construction before the slab or roof is complete?
- Is the deck near an external edge where wind-driven rain could reach the underside?
- Are there chemical or salt-laden atmospheres in the space beneath the deck?

What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.
- The supporting frame layout sets the span, and the frame and the deck are designed together.
- The concrete slab above, its reinforcement and its depth are part of the same element.
- Edge trims, closures and stop ends contain the pour and shape the visible perimeter.
- Roof build-ups above the deck depend on it as their base and as their fixing substrate.
- Service hangers and penetrations are coordinated with the profile and with the design.

- An exposed soffit shows the profile shape, the fixings, the side laps and any site damage.
- Coil coatings intended for visible soffits differ from those used on concealed decks.
- Cut lines at edges and around penetrations need trims if they are to look intentional.
