Noggin

Overview

What a noggin is

A noggin is a short piece fixed between two parallel members — studs in a wall, joists in a floor. Depending on where it is, it does one of three things: it stops slender members twisting, it gives an edge of a board something to fix to, or it provides a solid backing for something to be attached later.

The three jobs are unrelated to each other, which is why a wall can have plenty of noggins and still lack one where a heavy fitting needs support.
