Overview

What a subgrade is

The subgrade is the ground that a construction ultimately relies on: the soil or rock beneath the formation, extending down through whatever depth the loads above influence. It is not placed by the works; it is found by them.

Because it is found rather than made, it is the part of a build-up that is understood through investigation rather than specification. Its composition, water content and variability across a site are properties to be established, not chosen.

  • It is not the formation level. The formation is the exposed surface at the top of the subgrade; the subgrade is the body beneath, and it continues to matter well below the surface.
  • It is not engineered fill. Fill is placed and compacted deliberately to known conditions; a subgrade is pre-existing and is characterised rather than built.
  • It is not a sub-base. A sub-base is a constructed load-spreading layer above; the subgrade is what that layer spreads load onto.

Moisture

Water content is one of the strongest influences on how ground behaves, and it is not constant through a year or through a construction programme.

Movement

Some soils change volume with moisture, and structures founded on them have to take that into account. Which soils, and what to do about it, is investigation and design work.

Durability

Ground conditions that were acceptable when a building was constructed can be altered later by drainage changes, vegetation or neighbouring works.

Documentation

Ground investigation reports are the record of what the subgrade actually is, and they are the document worth asking for.
