Furring Channel

Overview
What a furring channel is
A furring channel is a light folded metal section — commonly a shallow top-hat profile — fixed across a wall or across ceiling framing so that boards are screwed to the channel rather than to the background behind it. Like a batten it creates a fixing plane in front of that background and a gap behind, and it is brought into plane with packers or with adjustable brackets.
What separates it from a timber batten is form rather than purpose. A folded profile is dimensionally consistent and does not move with moisture, it is fixed by screwing through its flanges rather than into its body, and the gap it leaves is set by the profile and by whatever holds it out rather than by the thickness of a member. Equally, it cannot be planed, notched or packed the way a timber section can, and a fixing driven through the finished lining meets thin metal rather than solid material.

- It is not a lining batten. Both form a fixing plane and a gap in front of a wall, and in many linings either could be used; the batten is solid timber that can be planed, notched and fixed into along its length, while the channel is a folded profile fixed through its flanges and adjusted with packers or brackets. The separation is one of form and of what each can accommodate, not of performance.
- It is not a resilient bar. Resilient bars and isolation channels are a published material entry whose defining purpose is to make the fixing flexible; a furring channel is a plain rigid fixing plane and does nothing to interrupt a connection.
- It is not a ceiling grid tee. A grid tee carries loose tiles on exposed flanges in a demountable ceiling and is seen from the room; a furring channel is concealed behind a lining that is screwed to it.

Metal sections are dimensionally consistent and unaffected by moisture, which is commonly why they are used on backgrounds and in buildings where timber battens would be a liability.
A channel screwed hard back to the wall is a rigid connection between wall and lining, which is exactly what a decoupled lining has to avoid; a different component addresses that, and it is not this one.
The zone behind the lining is shallow, and whatever runs in it is only reachable by taking board off.

Commonly misunderstood
- That a metal channel is automatically better than a timber batten. They are close alternatives, and the choice turns on the background, the moisture conditions and what the lining has to carry rather than on one being superior to the other.
- That a furring channel isolates a lining acoustically. It is a rigid fixing plane; the sections designed to soften that connection are a separate published material entry and a separate decision.
