Overview
What drylining framing is
Drylining framing is a family of thin steel profiles, roll-formed from galvanised strip, that create the skeleton a board lining is fixed to. The usual pieces are a U-shaped track fixed to floor and soffit, C-shaped studs that drop into it, and channel or bracket systems that hold a lining away from an existing wall.
It is an assembly component, not a finish. Nothing about the framing is seen once the lining is complete, yet the frame decides where boards can be fixed, how deep the cavity behind them is, and what can be run inside that cavity. Service holes are usually pre-punched in the stud web so cables and pipes can pass through without cutting.
The confusion worth clearing up is with structural cold-formed steel framing. That product is made to carry building loads. Drylining framing carries only the boards, the fixings driven into them and whatever a wall-hung item transfers back into it, so any question about supporting something heavy is a separate one for an engineer.

- The frame is the substrate the whole lining depends on. Its plumb, line and level are inherited by every board, skirting and reveal fixed to it, and errors there cannot be corrected by decoration.

- Setting out has to work back from the finished room, and first-fix services have to be complete before boarding, because the frame is closed in permanently once the boards go on.
- Moisture behaviour
- Steel standing in a damp cavity raises corrosion questions. Whether that risk exists at all depends on the existing wall and the room, and it is assessed by the professionals designing the build-up.
- Acoustic behaviour
- Sound behaviour belongs to the complete tested assembly and the room, not to a frame, so any expectation of it has to come from a specified system and its documentation.
- Fire-related questions
- Fire performance is a property of a tested assembly rather than of a profile. Any requirement is settled from the manufacturer's documentation and with the relevant authority, not from a reference page.
- Maintenance
- Once decorated, the frame is invisible. Future fixing, alteration and service access all depend on somebody having recorded where the studs and the services actually are.

- Nothing of the frame is visible, so the perceived quality of the finished wall comes from setting out and board work.
- A frame set out of plumb shows up in the line of skirtings, architraves and reveals rather than in the wall face itself.
- Wide flat surfaces reveal any waviness in the frame under raking light, which is worth checking before decoration.
- Junctions where a framed lining meets original plaster usually need a designed detail rather than a butt joint.
- Shadow gaps and recessed details have to be planned into the frame, not added to the surface afterwards.
