1.What you want the warm floor to do
Comfort underfoot and heating a room are two different requests. Being clear about which one you are making changes the whole of the conversation that follows.
Write down whether you want the floor to feel warm underfoot, to heat the room, or both, and say which matters more.
These are different requests and a professional can only answer well once they know which one you are actually making.
Note when the bathroom is used across the day, and at which of those moments a cold floor is actually noticed.
The pattern of use decides how an arrangement would be run, and it is information only the household can supply.
Ask whether the existing heat source would remain, be reduced or be removed, and write down the answer you are given.
Owners often assume a warm floor replaces what is already there, and that assumption belongs with a heating professional.
Whether a heated floor could serve as a heat source in this room must be established by a qualified heating professional.
Consider whether a heated towel rail is already doing part of this job, and what it would be expected to do afterwards.
A rail dries towels and warms a small room, and the two subjects are usually decided as though they were unrelated.
Note how the room feels when somebody steps out of the shower, since that is the specific moment being solved here.
The particular moment matters more than the general complaint, and describing it precisely sharpens the whole discussion.
Write down whether the room ever needs to warm quickly from cold, or is used at fairly predictable times instead.
How responsive the floor needs to be is a genuine requirement to state, and it points towards quite different arrangements.
2.Build-up, thresholds and added height
Anything added below a floor finish has to come from somewhere. The doorway is almost always where that becomes visible to everyone.
Look at how much room there is beneath the door now, before it would catch on a floor that has been raised.
Door clearance is the first casualty of a new floor build-up and it is easy to look at before anything at all is decided.
Note the level of the bathroom floor relative to the landing or hall immediately outside it.
The threshold is where a level change shows, and the existing relationship is the starting point for that discussion.
Ask what the whole build-up would be from the existing floor upwards, rather than asking only about the heating layer.
Insulation, adhesives and the finish all add to the total, and owners frequently ask about a single part of it only.
What the floor can take, and what build-up is appropriate, must be established by a qualified professional on site.
Ask what insulation beneath the heating would involve, and what difference it is expected to make in this room.
The layer beneath decides how much heat travels downwards, and it is often the first thing dropped when depth turns out to be tight.
Consider what a raised floor would do to the skirting, the door frame and anything already fixed down at floor level.
These are the details that make a raised floor look considered or improvised, and they are settled before work begins.
Walk slowly across the floor and note anywhere it gives, creaks or feels different, marking those areas on a sketch without concluding why.
Movement underfoot matters to anything laid over a floor, and describing where you felt it is more useful than guessing at the cause.

3.Which parts of the floor would be heated
A heated floor rarely covers the whole floor. Where it stops is decided by fixtures that are usually being chosen at exactly the same moment.
Mark on a sketch where people actually stand barefoot, including at the basin, beside the bath and stepping out of the shower.
Coverage is worth arguing for where feet genuinely go, and that is not spread evenly across the floor of a bathroom.
Ask whether the area beneath a vanity unit, a bath or a fixed cupboard would be heated or deliberately left out.
Areas under fixtures are commonly excluded, and knowing that changes how much of the floor is genuinely going to feel warm.
Note that fixture positions have to be settled before the heating layout is set out, and ask by when that must happen.
A vanity moved after the layout is agreed can end up standing over an area that was never meant to be covered by it.
Ask a qualified professional by when fixture positions must be final so that the heating layout can be planned.
Ask for a drawing of the proposed layout and keep a copy of it with the rest of your household papers.
The layout drawing is what makes later drilling or repair possible, and it is easy to obtain now and impossible to reconstruct later.
Consider whether a bath mat, a rug or a laundry basket would sit permanently over part of a heated area.
Anything left standing permanently traps heat, and the makers of both the heating and the finish tend to have views about it.
Ask the manufacturer and the installer what may be left standing on a heated floor and what should not be.
Note whether a freestanding bath or a shower waste position would interrupt the heated area, and where those gaps fall.
Wastes and bath feet break up the heated area, and those interruptions are far easier to plan for than to discover afterwards.
4.Sensors, thermostats and controls
The control is the part you touch. The sensor is the part you never see and depend on most, and its position is decided while the floor is open.
Ask where the floor sensor would sit and how that position was decided, since it governs what the arrangement thinks the floor is doing.
A sensor in the wrong part of the floor produces a room that never feels right and a fault that nobody can locate.
Ask whether a spare route is being left so that a failed sensor could be replaced without lifting the floor finish.
This single question separates a small later repair from a large one, and it has to be asked before the floor is covered.

5.The floor finish over the heating
The finish and the heating are really one decision. What the maker of the finish allows is the constraint that quietly settles several of the others.
Ask the supplier of the floor finish what they state about use over a heated floor, and get that answer in writing.
Finishes differ enormously in what their makers allow, and the answer must come from the manufacturer rather than from a showroom.
Whether a floor finish suits a heated background must be confirmed in writing by the supplier and the manufacturer.
Ask what limit the finish maker places on surface temperature, and how that limit would be respected in practice.
Almost every heated floor question about a finish comes back to this, and it is answered by the manufacturer information.
Note whether a timber or resilient finish is being considered, and raise movement as a specific question about it.
Materials that move with warmth and moisture behave differently over heating, and that question belongs early in the discussion.
Ask what the adhesive and any levelling material would need to be over a heated background rather than an ordinary one.
The layers between the heating and the finish are chosen for that particular situation and are easy to overlook completely.

Bathrooms accumulate electrical items gradually, and a complete list lets the right professional answer the question properly.
What supply arrangement a heated floor needs must be established by a qualified electrician and confirmed locally.
Ask where the connections and any cold ends of the heating would sit, and whether they could be reached later.
Connections that disappear beneath a finish are the hardest part of any repair, and their position is decided during the work.

7.Recording the layout before it is covered
There is a short moment when the whole arrangement is visible and will never be visible again. What is captured then is what makes later work possible.
Ask to be told before the floor is covered, so that photographs can be taken while everything is still exposed.
That moment passes without any announcement, and asking to be warned is the only reliable way of catching it in time.
Photograph the whole floor systematically, working across the room rather than taking one general view from the doorway.
A single wide photograph is almost useless later, while an overlapping sequence lets a position be worked out properly.
Note where the sensor, the connections and the edges of the heated area sit, and mark each of them on your sketch.
Those are the three things anyone drilling or repairing will want to know, and only you will have thought to record them.
Keep the photographs and the layout drawing together with the household papers rather than only on somebody phone.
Records living in one place on one device are lost when that device is, which tends to be exactly when they are needed.
Write down who installed the arrangement and what information they were asked to leave behind at the end.

Controls and sensors sit at very different levels of accessibility, and knowing which is which is genuinely useful later.
Ask what the household should notice that would suggest something has started to go wrong.
Slow failures go unnoticed for a long time, and knowing the signs is more useful than any assurance would be.
Note what the household would do for warmth in this room if the floor were out of use for a while.
A bathroom relying entirely on one arrangement has no fallback, which is worth deciding on rather than discovering.
Ask what conditions the manufacturer attaches to the arrangement, and what would put those conditions at risk.
Conditions usually concern how it is run and what is placed on the floor, and both of those are things a household controls.

Write these down in your own words, with the date, so everyone is working from the same version.

- The floor finish chosen and the written confirmation that its maker allows this use
