1.What the island is actually being asked to do
Islands fail most often because nobody wrote down what they were for. Name the tasks before anything is drawn.
Write down the tasks you expect to happen at the island, and check whether each one is currently done somewhere that works badly.
An island that solves a named problem is easy to design around; one that exists to fill the middle of the room rarely satisfies.
Decide whether the island is primarily for preparation, for eating, for storage or for the look of the room, and say which comes first.
Naming the leading purpose settles many later arguments, because it is what decides depth, height and services.
Note whether the island is meant to be a place people gather while somebody cooks, since that changes almost every other decision.
A social island and a working island are different pieces of furniture, even when they look similar in a photograph.
Consider whether the island is being asked to absorb work the rest of the room cannot do, or simply to add more surface.
If the perimeter is short of preparation surface, an island may be the answer, but so might a rearranged run.
Record what would be lost if the island held no services at all and was only a surface with storage beneath it.
This question separates the islands that genuinely need plumbing from the ones that acquired it by habit.
Note who in the household wants the island and what they picture it doing, since two people rarely picture the same thing.
Unspoken disagreement about the island tends to surface late, usually after a drawing has been produced.
2.The space that has to stay clear around it
The island itself is easy to imagine. The space around it is what decides whether the room still works.
Mark out the footprint of the island on the floor with tape and live around it for a while before deciding anything.
Nothing else tells you as much for as little effort, and most doubts about an island resolve themselves once you are living around it.
Walk between the sink, the cooking area and the fridge with the outline in place, carrying something in both hands.
Carrying something is the test, because an island that is fine when you are empty handed can be tiresome when you are not.
Open every nearby appliance door and cupboard door with the outline in place, and note exactly what collides with what.
Collisions with the island are the most common regret, and they can be found now with a roll of tape.
Ask the designer and the appliance manufacturer what clearances doors and drawers need around an island in your room.
Note whether two people can pass each other on each side of the outline, and which side becomes the pinch point.
Islands are almost never surrounded by equal space, and the tight side is the one you will notice every day.
Consider what happens when a dishwasher or oven door is open and somebody needs to get past, which is the moment most islands fail.
This single scenario reveals more about an island than any general discussion of walkways.
Ask what clearance the designer and the installer would want around the island for the appliances you intend to use.
Clearances vary with the appliance and the room, so this belongs with the people who will be responsible for it.
Clearances around appliances and islands must be confirmed with the appliance manufacturer and the installer rather than assumed.
3.Services in the middle of the room
Anything that needs water, waste, power or extraction in the centre of a room raises questions that only qualified trades can answer.
Decide whether you want a sink, a hob, both or neither in the island, and record the reason rather than only the preference.
The reason survives the conversation with a designer; a bare preference tends to be traded away without anyone noticing.
Ask what would be involved in bringing water and waste to the middle of the room before assuming a sink can go there.
Drainage is the constraint that most often decides whether an island sink is straightforward or awkward.
Where drainage can run under a floor is for a qualified plumber or drainage professional to establish on site.
Note what the floor appears to be built of, as far as you can tell, and ask what taking services through it would involve.
The floor construction changes the answer completely, which is why the question is asked before the island is drawn.
Whether a floor can be opened up for services must be assessed by a qualified professional on site.
Ask how power would reach the island and where outlets could sensibly sit on or in it.
Sockets on an island are used constantly, and their position is easier to get right before anything is manufactured.
Positions for electrical points in an island are for a qualified electrician to advise on.
Consider whether a hob in the island means people would be seated close to cooking, and record how you feel about that.
This is a matter of how the household actually uses the room, and it is worth deciding openly rather than discovering later.
Anything involving a hob, gas or extraction close to seating should be discussed with the relevant qualified trades.
Note whether any appliance placed in the island would need a door that swings into a walkway or towards a seated person.
Appliances in islands are often positioned for the drawing rather than for the way the door actually opens.
Record whether you would still want the island if the answers about services turn out to be difficult or unwelcome.
Deciding this in advance stops the project drifting into an arrangement that nobody actually chose on purpose.
4.Sitting at an island and what that displaces
Seating at an island is popular in pictures and awkward in practice unless the arrangement is worked through.
Decide whether seating at the island is for quick meals, for company while cooking, or for working, since each needs something different.
The purpose decides the height, the overhang and whether the seats face the cook or the room.
Note how many people would sit there in practice rather than at the largest gathering you can imagine.
Designing for the rare occasion tends to produce a run of seats that are unusable in ordinary use.
Consider whether a seated person would be sitting in the route between the cooking area and the sink.
Someone sitting in the working triangle is a permanent obstruction, and this only becomes obvious once people are there.
Ask what overhang the worktop material will take where people sit, and what support it would need underneath.
Overhang is a material and fabrication question, and the answer often changes what the island can look like.
The overhang a worktop can carry depends on the material and its fabricator and must be confirmed with them.
Note where knees and feet would go under the island, and whether storage on that side is being given up to make room.
Knee space quietly removes a whole side of storage, which is rarely mentioned when seating is added to a drawing.
Consider where stools go when the island is being used for work, and whether they can be pushed fully out of the way.
An island loses much of its value as a work surface if the seats cannot be cleared away from the side you need to stand at.
5.Storing things inside an island and getting at them
Island storage is often treated as spare capacity. It works far better when it is planned around specific contents.
Decide what would actually live inside the island rather than treating it as extra room to be filled later.
Islands filled with whatever was left over become the place things go to be forgotten.
Note which side of the island each stored item would be reached from, and whether that side stays accessible in use.
A drawer on the seating side is unreachable whenever anybody is sitting there.
Consider whether storage is wanted on both sides, and ask what that means for the depth available on each of them.
Back to back storage halves the depth on each side, which suits some contents and defeats others.
Note anything you would want kept at the island itself, such as a bin, boards or the utensils used there.
Storage placed where the task happens is the main practical argument for an island in the first place.
Consider whether a deep island leaves a dead centre that nothing can be reached into from either side.
The unreachable middle is a real loss of space and is easier to design around than to discover afterwards.
Record whether you want any part of the island to read as furniture rather than as cabinetry, and accept that this reduces storage.
The furniture look and maximum storage pull in opposite directions, so choosing openly avoids disappointment.
6.What happens in the space above the island
The ceiling over an island carries lighting, extraction and sometimes storage, and all three compete for the same place.
Decide whether anything is intended to hang above the island, and note what that does to sightlines across the room.
Anything hanging over an island is at eye level for anyone standing, which is not how it appears in a photograph.
Ask what extraction would be needed if a hob went into the island, and what it would look like in the room.
Extraction over an island is usually the single most visible element of the whole kitchen.
Extraction requirements depend on the appliance and the property and must be settled with the installer and a qualified professional.
Note the ceiling above the island, including any slope, beam or fitting that would restrict what could hang there.
The ceiling above the island is rarely as plain as it appears once something has to be fixed to it.
Whether anything can be fixed to or run through the ceiling above the island is for a qualified professional to establish.
Consider how the island would be lit when the rest of the kitchen lighting is switched off.
The island is often the last surface in use in the evening, and it needs light of its own.
Note whether a hanging rack or shelf above the island would sit in the eyeline of anyone seated at it.
Seated eye level is lower than standing eye level, which is how racks end up blocking conversation across the island.
Consider the noise an extraction unit makes if people are seated directly beneath it, and ask to hear one running.
Noise directly above seating is the complaint most often reported after an island with a hob is finished.
7.What the rest of the room gives up in exchange
An island always takes something from the perimeter. It is worth naming what, before the drawing makes it look free.
Note what would have been on the wall the island now serves, and check whether that storage has actually gone somewhere else.
Islands frequently replace wall units, and the storage is quietly lost rather than relocated.
Consider whether the island pushes the perimeter runs shorter, and identify what drops off the plan as a result.
Something always comes off the plan, and it is better to choose what than to have it decided by the drawing.
Record whether a table would still fit in the room alongside the island, and mark on the plan where it would go.
Wanting both an island and a table is common and often only becomes impossible once both are drawn.
Note whether the island blocks a route people currently take through the room, particularly to a door or to the garden.
Habitual routes are strong, and an island placed across one is resented long after everything else is forgiven.
Consider whether the island makes the room harder to clean around, including the floor beneath and behind it.
Four sides of plinth and a floor that cannot be reached from one direction add up over a long period.
Note what happens to daylight and to the sense of the room when a solid block occupies its middle.
The island changes how the room reads as much as how it works, and both deserve to be considered.
8.Testing the island against the honest alternatives
The most useful thing you can bring to a design conversation is a fair comparison you have already made yourself.
Draw the same kitchen with a peninsula instead of an island and compare what each arrangement takes from the room.
A peninsula gives up one side of access and gains a great deal of layout freedom, which suits many rooms better.
Consider a table in the middle of the room instead, since a table can be moved and an island never can.
Flexibility is worth naming as a benefit, because it disappears permanently the moment the island is fitted.
Test whether a longer run of units along one wall would solve the same problem the island is meant to solve.
If the problem is preparation surface, a longer run often delivers more of it for less disruption to the room.
Note what you would lose with no island at all, and be specific about the task that would suffer as a result.
If you cannot name the task, the island is probably being chosen for its appearance, which is worth admitting.
Ask the designer to show the room both with and without an island before either version is settled on.
Seeing the alternative drawn properly is the only fair way to judge what the island is taking.
Record which alternative you would accept if the island turns out not to work in this room.
Having a fallback already agreed keeps the project moving when the answer about services or space is unwelcome.

Documents and information to gather
Having these to hand usually makes the first conversation shorter and more useful.
- A floor plan or sketch of the room with the island outline marked on it
- Photographs of the room with the island footprint taped out on the floor
- Notes on what collides when doors and drawers are opened around that outline
- A written list of the tasks the island is expected to take on
- Details of any appliance intended for the island and its own requirements
- Notes on where existing services appear to enter and leave the room
Records
Decisions to record before work begins
Write these down in your own words, with the date, so everyone is working from the same version.
- What the island is primarily for, named in order of importance
- Whether the island is to carry a sink, a hob, both or neither
- How many people would realistically sit at it in ordinary use
- What the perimeter of the room gives up in exchange for the island
- Which alternative you would accept if an island proves unworkable here
- Whether an island with no services at all would still be worth having

Commonly overlooked items
- The dishwasher door that blocks the walkway beside the island when it is open
- The route people habitually take through the room to a door or the garden
- Knee space under the island quietly removing storage from that whole side
- The noise of an extraction unit running directly above where people sit
- The dead centre of a deep island that nothing can be reached into
- Where the wall storage went that the island was meant to replace
- Whether the room still has space for a table once the island is in it
