1.Looking at soil without opening new ground
Most plots already offer several places where soil is visible. Using them avoids the one thing an owner should not do, which is dig into ground nobody has checked for buried services.
Use ground that is already open, such as a border edge, the gap left where a plant was lifted, an eroded bank or a molehill.
There is usually more exposed soil on a plot than people realise, and none of it requires anybody to break new ground.
Look at the soil clinging to the roots of anything you have recently moved, and note how it differs from the ground it was growing in.
The contrast between rootball and surrounding ground often shows how little the two have mixed, which matters for planting.
Check anywhere a slab, pot, timber or container has been lifted, since the ground beneath tells you what the surface has been hiding.
Ground kept covered stays compacted and pale, and it is a useful contrast with soil that has been open to the weather.
Note what sticks to boots and tools after wet conditions, which is a fair guide to how the surface layer behaves when it is saturated.
How ground behaves when wet governs when it can be worked and whether machinery can cross it at all.
Look at the cut face of any existing bank, ditch or step in the ground where a soil profile is already exposed to view.
An existing face shows the layers in order, which is far more informative than anything scraped from the surface.
Resist opening trial holes yourself, and instead write down where you would want somebody qualified to look and why.
A marked list of places worth investigating is genuinely useful to a professional and carries none of the risk.
Digging into ground whose buried services have not been established is work for a qualified professional to arrange and supervise.
2.Describing what the soil feels and looks like
Plain description in ordinary language is exactly what a professional wants from an owner. Attempting a classification is not, and it tends to obscure the useful part.
Take a small moist sample, work it between your fingers, and note whether it feels gritty, silky or sticky under the thumb.
Those three sensations are the vocabulary most horticultural conversations start from and they need no equipment at all.
Try rolling a moist sample into a ball and note whether it holds together, crumbles apart or smears when you press it.
How a sample behaves under pressure is descriptive evidence a professional can interpret, whereas your conclusion about it is not.
Note the colour of the surface soil and whether it changes sharply lower down, describing the change rather than putting a figure on it.
A sudden colour change usually marks the bottom of the workable layer, and that boundary shapes what can be planted.
Record how deep the darker surface layer appears at each place you looked, described in your own terms as shallow, moderate or deep.
Comparative depth across the plot is far more useful from an owner than any attempt at precision.
Note whether the soil smells earthy, sour or of very little, and whether it is full of roots and worms or of neither.
Smell and visible life are quick indicators that a professional will follow up, and they take moments to record.
Write down what stone content you can see, separating natural gravel from brick, mortar, clinker and anything that clearly came off a building.
Building fragments in soil change the conversation entirely, because they suggest the ground was made rather than grown.
3.How the ground changes from one corner to another
The most common mistake in an owner soil record is describing one hole as though it were the whole garden. Variation is the interesting part and it is easy to capture.
Look at the ground at several separate points rather than one, since the far end of a plot is frequently nothing like the ground beside the house.
Two contrasting descriptions tell a professional more than a single confident one, and they prompt the right follow-up questions.
Look particularly at the strip along the house, where ground is often disturbed, compacted or made up from earlier building work.
This is where most planting near a property fails, and the reason is usually what was left there rather than what was planted.
Ground close to a building involves foundations and drainage; ask a qualified professional before anything is dug or planted tight against a wall.
Note the ground beneath and around established trees and hedges, which is usually drier, more root-filled and poorer than open ground.
Planting proposed under a canopy competes for water and root space, and the soil record should say so plainly.
Check the strip along each boundary, which often carries a long history of tipping, burning and material dumped out of sight.
Boundary strips are where garden waste, rubble and bonfire remains accumulate, and they rarely resemble the middle of the plot.
Note where the ground feels noticeably harder underfoot, such as an old parking area, a former path line or a base that has been covered over.
Hard patches often mark something buried, and they are obvious to anybody who walks the plot deliberately looking for them.
Mark all of this on your sketch so the variation is recorded as a map rather than as a general impression of the garden.
A mapped record can be checked and argued with, which is exactly what makes it worth handing over.
4.How the ground takes water and how long it holds it
What the ground does with water is the observation an owner is better placed than anybody to make, because it requires being there when it rains rather than any expertise.
Watch where puddles form after heavy rain and note whether they appear in the same places every time or move around.
Puddles that return to the same spot point at the ground itself, while wandering ones more often point at where water arrives from.
Note how long standing water takes to disappear, described in your own terms and paired with the date it was seen.
Comparative persistence between areas is the useful part, and it is meaningless without the date attached to it.
Record where the ground stays soft when the rest of the plot has firmed up, and which areas dry out first.
This contrast is the clearest owner-visible evidence of how the ground varies, and it shows up after every wet spell.
Note whether the surface cracks, crusts or turns to dust during a dry spell, and where that starts happening first.
Behaviour in dry conditions is as informative as behaviour in wet ones, and it is far less often written down.
Check whether water in an existing planting hole sits rather than soaking away, and record where and when you saw it.
It is a simple observation that frequently changes what a professional proposes for planting in that area.
How water moves through this ground and what should be done about it is drainage design, which belongs with a qualified professional.
Note the dry strips beneath eaves, walls and dense canopies, where planting often struggles for reasons that have nothing to do with soil type.
Rain shadow is regularly blamed on the ground, which sends everybody looking for the wrong solution.
5.What the existing planting reports about the ground
Plants have been testing this ground for far longer than you have. Their behaviour is good evidence, provided it is recorded rather than interpreted.
Record which plants have thrived here without any attention, and which have been replaced more than once in the same position.
A spot that has killed the same plant twice is telling you something specific, and it deserves a note rather than a third attempt.
Note where moss dominates and where bare compacted ground has stopped supporting anything at all.
Both are visible from a distance and both mark areas where the ground rather than the planting is the issue.
Write down where growth is lush and where it is stunted, keeping the note descriptive rather than attributing a cause to it.
Descriptions survive scrutiny; owner diagnoses tend to be wrong in ways that quietly mislead the next person reading the record.
Note which plants have arrived and established on their own, since anything that seeds itself here is reporting what the ground supports.
Volunteers are a free indication of conditions and they are often more honest than anything that was deliberately planted.
Record any place where a plant failed suddenly rather than gradually, and what was done to the ground shortly beforehand.
The sequence of events matters and it is easily forgotten, particularly where work took place nearby.
Plant failure has many possible causes; ask a horticultural or arboricultural professional rather than concluding anything from the ground alone.
Note whether planting close to a wall behaves differently from the same planting further out into the open plot.
The strip beside a wall combines rain shadow, reflected heat and disturbed ground, and each is a separate question.
6.Signs the ground was brought in or worked over
A great many gardens sit partly on material that arrived with a builder rather than with the landscape. The surface usually gives it away if you know what to look at.
Look for a sharp change in soil colour or texture across a short distance, which often marks the edge of ground that was made up.
Natural ground grades gradually, so an abrupt boundary is usually the trace of something that was placed there.
Note any area that sits unnaturally flat or level within a plot that is otherwise uneven.
Flat platforms in sloping gardens are almost always man-made, and what they are made of matters to anything built on them.
Record construction material appearing in the soil, including mortar, brick, tile, ash, clinker and fragments of hard surfacing.
The mix of material hints at when and how the ground was formed, which is useful background for a professional.
Check whether the edge of a membrane, plastic sheet or geotextile is showing anywhere at the surface.
A buried membrane changes how water and roots move, and its extent is rarely known by anybody currently living there.
Note where the ground has settled into a line or a dip, since this often marks a filled trench or a feature that was covered over.
A settlement line is one of the clearest surface clues available, and it points at both ground history and possible buried runs.
Made ground, imported fill and settlement behave unpredictably and must be assessed by a qualified professional before anything is built on them.
Write down whatever you were told about the site history when you bought the property, in the words it was told to you.
Recollection is a lead rather than a fact, but it points a professional at what to check and where.
7.Earlier use of the ground and the questions it raises
What stood here before is often the most important thing about the soil, and it is nearly always known to somebody. These are questions to raise, never to answer yourself.
List whatever you know once stood on the plot, including a garage, an outbuilding, a greenhouse, a coal store or a pond that was filled in.
Each of these leaves a distinct footprint in the ground, and knowing about it saves everybody a great deal of guessing.
Note where a bonfire corner, ash heap or spoil pile appears to have been, since these leave a lasting mark on the soil beneath them.
Bonfire ground is common in older gardens and behaves quite differently from the soil surrounding it.
Record where a fuel tank, drum or machinery was kept, and raise it as a question rather than drawing any conclusion from it.
Position is a fact you can record; anything beyond that is a specialist matter and should be handed over as such.
Anything suggesting contamination is for a suitably qualified specialist, with local confirmation of what applies before ground is disturbed.
Note whether the plot was once part of a larger site, a field or an orchard, which sometimes explains what turns up in the soil.
Land history explains oddities that otherwise look inexplicable, such as buried hard surfaces or unusually rich strips.
Ask what the ground was used for during construction if the property is recent, since site compounds leave heavily compacted ground behind.
New gardens often fail not because of the soil type but because of what happened on that soil while the house was being built.
Write down anything a neighbour recalls about earlier use of the ground, keeping it clearly marked as their recollection.
Neighbours frequently remember what was taken out or filled in, and nobody else holds that information.
8.Turning scattered observations into a usable record
Soil notes accumulate quickly and become useless just as quickly. A little structure at the point of writing them makes the difference between evidence and a pile of impressions.
Date every observation and note the weather in the period before it, because ground behaviour depends heavily on what preceded the moment you looked.
The same ground reads as free draining after a dry spell and as waterlogged after a wet one, so the context is essential.
Photograph each sample beside something ordinary and recognisable so that stone size and structure can be read from the picture.
A photograph of soil with nothing beside it is almost impossible to interpret, however sharp the image is.
Bag and label a small sample from each area separately, noting exactly where on your sketch each one came from.
Unlabelled samples are worthless within a short time, and mixing them together destroys the variation you went to collect.
Keep the observations that contradict each other rather than tidying them into one answer for the whole plot.
Contradictions usually mean the ground genuinely differs, and smoothing them away removes the most useful finding.
Ask what soil testing would be worth arranging here, what it can answer and what it cannot.
Testing answers narrower questions than most owners expect, so knowing the limits before arranging any is worthwhile.
Ask what a professional needs from you before the ground can be discussed properly, and record the answer against your notes.
Finding out what is missing early avoids a second observation season being lost to a gap nobody mentioned.
Preparation
Documents and information to gather
Having these to hand usually makes the first conversation shorter and more useful.
- A sketch of the plot marked with every place you looked at the soil
- Dated photographs of soil samples and of the ground after heavy rain
- Labelled sample bags identifying which part of the plot each came from
- Any site history mentioned in the purchase paperwork or by neighbours
- Notes of earlier ground works, landscaping or building on the plot
- A record of planting that has failed and exactly where each failure was

Write these down in your own words, with the date, so everyone is working from the same version.
- Which parts of the plot you now treat as having different ground from the rest
- Whether testing or a professional ground assessment is being arranged
- Which areas you will leave undisturbed until somebody qualified has looked
- What you are prepared to change about the ground and what stays as it is
- Which soil questions must be answered before planting is chosen

- Construction rubble sitting a short way beneath convincing-looking topsoil
- Observations taken after a long dry spell and quietly treated as normal
- Samples collected carefully and then left unlabelled until nobody knows the source

- Handling soil, feeling its texture and describing its colour is observation only and replaces no form of testing.
- Nothing recorded here establishes whether ground is contaminated, stable or able to carry a structure.
- Do not open new ground to investigate soil until buried services have been established by a qualified professional.
- Where earlier use raises a question, confirm locally what applies and involve a suitably qualified specialist.
