This is general planning preparation. These situations need a qualified professional, and often the relevant authority.

- Working out whether the layers you want can be separately controlled, which the professionals involved determine
- Assessing whether what is already installed here could carry the layers you have described, which is a matter for a qualified professional on site
- Settling lighting for a room where sight or health needs are a factor, which needs professional advice

1.Naming the separate jobs the light has to do
Layering only makes sense once the jobs are named. Write the jobs before considering how many kinds of light might serve them.
For each room, write a short list of the jobs the light has to do, phrased as things people are trying to see rather than as moods.
Jobs are testable and moods are not, and a room usually turns out to have more jobs than the owner expected.
Mark which of those jobs are about seeing something clearly and which are about how the room feels when nothing in particular is being done.
These two demands often pull in opposite directions, and naming which is which prevents one quietly overriding the other.
Note where two jobs in the same room conflict, such as somewhere used both for close work and for sitting quietly in the evening.
A conflict stated in the brief gets solved by separation; a conflict left unstated gets solved by a compromise nobody likes.
Identify rooms that genuinely have one job only, and resist adding layers there simply because other rooms are getting them.
Not every room benefits from being layered, and saying so protects the parts of the scheme that do.
Note any job that does not stay in one place, such as tidying, cleaning or looking for something, since it needs light across the room rather than at a point.
Roaming jobs are the reason a room of well-aimed pools of light can still be unusable for half its purposes.
Add the unglamorous jobs to the list, such as finding a plug behind furniture or checking whether a floor is actually clean.
These are the jobs a finished scheme most often fails at, precisely because nobody puts them in writing.
2.What a single central fitting is being asked to carry
Most rooms start with one light in the middle of the ceiling. Understanding what that arrangement does badly is the honest starting point.
Watch what the existing central fitting does well and what it does badly over an ordinary evening, and write both down rather than only the complaints.
General light from overhead does some jobs perfectly well, and knowing which ones stops the new scheme discarding something useful.
Note where you end up working in your own shadow when the central fitting is the only light on, and what you are doing at the time.
Overhead light coming from behind a person is the most common single complaint in existing rooms.
Mark the corners the central fitting never really reaches, and note what happens in each of those corners.
A dark corner holding a bookcase is not a problem; the same corner holding a chair somebody reads in certainly is.
Sit where people actually sit and note whether the fitting is uncomfortable to look towards, since that is not obvious while standing.
Fittings are judged standing up and lived with sitting down, which is why so many rooms have an unused ceiling light.
Record whether the room is effectively all-on or all-off, and how often you would have chosen something between the two.
Wanting less light without wanting darkness is the demand layering exists to answer, and it should be stated as such.
Note which portable lamps you already switch on instead of the ceiling light, since each one describes a layer the room is missing.
The household has usually already built an informal second layer, and it is worth reading before designing a formal one.
3.Deciding which layers each room genuinely needs
This is the central decision. It is made room by room, against the job list, and it should be written down with reasons.
Decide and record whether each room needs a general layer that lights the whole space, or whether it can work from several local pools instead.
Some rooms are better without an overall wash, but that choice has to be deliberate rather than an accident of fitting placement.
Record which rooms need light aimed at a specific working position, and mark on the sketch exactly where that position is.
A task layer without a marked position becomes a fitting somewhere near the right area, which is not the same thing at all.
Decide whether a room needs any light aimed at something for its own sake, and name the thing rather than describing the effect.
Accent light without a named subject drifts during a project and ends up pointed at a blank wall.
Consider whether any room needs a very low layer for moving about at night, and record which rooms and which routes that would apply to.
Night movement is a distinct demand and is usually solved badly by dimming a layer designed for something else.
Note where a fitting is wanted mainly as an object in the room, and record that as a separate intention from any light it happens to give.
Treating a decorative piece as though it were also the general layer is how rooms end up both under-lit and over-decorated.
Write down how many layers you have decided each room needs, and check whether the number is driven by the job list or by habit.
Layer counts tend to spread evenly across a property when they should vary sharply between rooms.
4.How the room reads when only some layers are on
A scheme is judged by its combinations, not by each layer alone. Decide now what the useful settings are.
Name the two or three settings you actually want in each room, describing each by what is happening rather than by which layers are on.
Settings described by activity survive the project; settings described by fittings change meaning as the design develops.
Describe the lowest setting a room needs to remain usable, and what still has to be visible at that point, such as a step or a door.
The lowest setting is where most schemes fail, because it is designed last and tested only after everything is finished.
Note any layer that would be unpleasant on its own, and record that it should be expected to work in company rather than by itself.
Strongly directional light without any surrounding light is uncomfortable, and this is easier to say now than to discover later.
Where rooms open into one another, note which layers will be seen from the neighbouring space and whether that is wanted.
In open-plan arrangements you are always looking at somebody else's lighting, and that governs how separate the settings need to be.
Record which layers are visible from outside the property after dark, and whether that changes what you want left on in the evening.
Rooms are often lit for the view in and not only the view out, and it is a decision worth making deliberately.
Try approximating a setting with portable lamps for an evening before committing to it, and note what you found rather than what you expected.
A rough physical test contradicts an owner assumption often enough to be worth the inconvenience.
5.Layers that depend on the furniture staying where it is
Any layer aimed at a point assumes that point stays fixed. Some of those assumptions are safe and some are not.
Mark which pieces of furniture the scheme is being planned around, and say honestly which of them could realistically move.
A layer planned around a sofa that gets rearranged twice a season is a layer that will be wrong most of the time.
Note where a layer depends on joinery that has not been built yet, and treat both as one decision rather than two.
Lighting integrated into joinery has to be agreed with whoever is making the joinery, and the gap between the two is where it goes wrong.
Coordination between joinery and any integrated lighting is for the qualified professionals involved to agree, including how it is powered and reached.
Identify rooms that are regularly rearranged, and decide whether their lighting should be tied to positions at all.
Rooms with moving furniture are usually better served by flexible arrangements than by beautifully aimed fixed ones.
Note rooms whose furniture will change as the household changes, and record what you would want to remain useful through that change.
The layers that survive a change of use are usually the general ones, which is an argument for not abandoning them entirely.
Record where a layer depends on light bouncing off a wall, ceiling or floor, and note what finish that surface is expected to have.
Reflected layers change completely if the finish changes, and the two decisions are usually made by different people at different times.
Note where a planned layer relies on a portable lamp, and record where its power would come from and how the cable would run.
Where power can be provided for a lamp position is a matter for a suitably qualified electrician working to the requirements that apply locally.
6.Where the layers meet the surfaces of the room
A large part of what a layer achieves is done by the surfaces it lands on, and those are usually chosen by somebody else entirely.
Note the colour and finish of each ceiling, and whether it is being changed, since a layer aimed upwards depends entirely on what it meets.
A dark ceiling absorbs a great deal of an upward layer, which turns a planned wash into a faint glow nobody expected.
Record which walls are to be smooth and which textured, and note where a layer is intended to graze along a surface rather than land flat on it.
Light skimming a wall shows every irregularity in it, which is either the point or a serious problem depending on intent.
Whether a wall finish will look acceptable under grazing light is a question for the decorator or supplier before the layer is committed to.
Note how reflective each floor finish is, and whether a downward layer would bounce off it into the eyes of somebody seated nearby.
Floor reflection is rarely considered at the layering stage and is very hard to correct afterwards.
Record where glass, mirrors or a large window sit in relation to each planned layer, and what would be reflected in them after dark.
A window becomes a mirror at night, and any layer facing it appears twice, usually at an angle nobody intended.
Note where soft furnishings, curtains or heavy textiles will absorb light, particularly in a room whose layers are being kept deliberately few.
A room finished in soft dark materials behaves very differently from the bare room the layers were imagined in.
7.Recording layer decisions so they survive the project
Layer intentions are lost faster than any other part of a lighting brief, because they live in conversation rather than on drawings.
Write each layer down as an intention, naming the job and the position, rather than as the fitting you imagine achieving it.
Intentions can be met in several ways, while a named fitting forecloses the advice you were hoping to receive.
Mark the layers on a room sketch with the furniture on it, using nothing more than labels and arrows for direction.
A crude annotated sketch communicates layering better than several paragraphs, and takes far less time to produce.
Put the layers in order of importance for each room, so that any later reduction removes the least important rather than the least visible.
Reductions happen, and the layer removed is usually the one nobody had argued for in writing.
Mark which layer decisions you hold firmly and which you are offering as a starting point for advice.
A professional will improve on a stated starting point but will rarely challenge something presented as settled.
Ask at what point each layer decision becomes difficult to change, and record the answer against each room.
Different layers become fixed at very different moments, and knowing which are urgent focuses your attention correctly.
When a decision has to be final depends on how the work is being carried out and should be confirmed with the professionals doing it.
Record the reason beside each layer decision, not only the decision itself, so that a later change can be judged against the original purpose.
Decisions without reasons get reversed by whoever is in the room at the time, usually without anyone realising what was lost.

Having these to hand usually makes the first conversation shorter and more useful.
- A written list of the jobs the light must do in each room
- A sketch per room carrying the layer intentions, each labelled with the direction it points
- Notes from an evening spent observing what the existing lighting does badly
- A list of the portable lamps already compensating for missing layers
- Photographs of the room at each of the settings you can currently produce
- Notes on any finish or joinery a planned layer would depend on

Decisions to record before work begins
Write these down in your own words, with the date, so everyone is working from the same version.
- Which rooms need a general layer and which can work from local pools alone
- Where each task position sits, marked on the sketch rather than described
- What each accent layer is actually aimed at, named as an object
- Which rooms need a very low setting for moving about at night
- The order of importance of the layers in each room
- Which layer decisions are firm and which are offered for advice

- The unglamorous jobs, such as finding something behind furniture or checking a floor
- Whether a layer would be unpleasant when used on its own
- What the room looks like from the neighbouring space it opens into
- Layers that depend entirely on a wall or ceiling finish that is still undecided
- Rooms that are rearranged often, where aimed layers will usually be wrong
- The reason behind each layer decision, without which it gets reversed casually
What this checklist does not do
- Deciding what the light in a room should do is as far as this goes; it settles nothing about fittings, output or how any layer would be achieved.
- How any layer is wired, grouped, controlled or powered must be determined by a suitably qualified electrician for your property.
- Where lighting is integrated into joinery, the coordination and access arrangements belong with the qualified professionals building it.
- If anyone using a room has particular sight or comfort needs, the layering should be discussed with a qualified professional advising that person.
