This is general planning preparation. These situations need a qualified professional, and often the relevant authority.

1.What the fitting is actually hanging over
A hung fitting is judged by its relationship to the thing below it. Record what that thing is before anything else is discussed.
Write down what sits directly beneath each proposed hung position, and say whether that object is fixed in place or something the household moves.
A pendant over a fixed island is a different decision from a pendant over a table that gets pushed aside for guests.
Note whether the table or worktop below is centred in the room or sits off to one side, since a fitting cannot usually be centred on both at once.
Choosing which one the fitting lines up with is a decision the owner should make rather than discover after fixing.
Record the shape of what sits below, and consider whether a single round fitting suits a long surface or whether the arrangement needs rethinking.
Mismatched shapes are obvious once the fitting is up and were usually visible on paper long before that.
Mark any position where nothing in particular sits below and the fitting is wanted mainly as an object, and record that intention honestly.
A fitting hung for its appearance is a legitimate choice, but it should not be expected to light the space beneath it as well.
Note where a hung fitting would sit over a route people walk, carry things along or open a door into, and write down who passes there.
Circulation under a low fitting is the most common reason a pendant is later shortened or removed altogether.
Ask someone to hold a rough stand-in at the proposed position, photograph it from the doorway and note how it read from where people enter the room.
A crude mock-up settles arguments about scale and position that catalogue images never will.
2.How far it hangs and what has to pass beneath
The drop is the decision most often left to the day of fixing. Bring it to the conversation with the passing traffic already listed.
List everything that has to pass under the fitting, including people standing up from a chair, a tall guest, a door leaf and anything carried across the room.
The list is usually longer than expected and turns the drop from a taste question into a practical one.
Sit where people face each other beneath the position and note whether a fitting hanging there would sit in the line between their faces.
Conversation across a table is the thing a low pendant interrupts, and it is only visible from a seated position.
Ask the supplier what range of drop the fitting allows and whether the flex, chain or rod can be altered, and by whom.
Some fittings are adjustable on site and some arrive at a set length, which changes when the decision has to be final.
Any alteration to how a fitting is suspended or supplied is a matter for a suitably qualified electrician rather than the household.
Note where ceiling heights differ between parts of an open space, since one drop rarely suits two heights and the difference is easy to miss on a plan.
Open-plan rooms often have a change of ceiling level that only becomes obvious when matching fittings are hung across it.
Where a ceiling slopes, ask whether the fitting is made to hang true from a slope or whether something additional would be needed.
Not every suspension arrangement copes with a sloping ceiling, and the answer determines whether the position is possible at all.
Record any door, window or rooflight opening that swings or slides near the position, and note how close it comes to the proposed drop.
A pendant near an inward-opening window is a problem discovered on the first warm evening rather than during design.
3.What the ceiling has to hold and who decides that
Everything about fixing belongs with a qualified professional. Your job is to gather the facts they will ask for and to raise the question early.
Ask a suitably qualified professional to establish what the ceiling at each position can support, and record what you are told before ordering anything.
Heavier fittings are frequently chosen first and questioned later, which is the wrong order for everyone involved.
What a ceiling can carry and how a fitting should be supported must be determined on site by a suitably qualified professional.
Note anything visible from below that suggests the ceiling has been altered, such as a patched line, a filled hole or a change of surface texture.
Previous alterations tell a professional where to look and often explain why an existing point sits where it does.
Ask the supplier what the fitting weighs and pass that figure to the professionals rather than describing the fitting as light or heavy yourself.
Owner impressions of weight are unreliable, and the supplier figure is the thing the fixing conversation actually needs.
Mark where the existing ceiling point sits in relation to where you want the fitting, and ask what moving it would involve before assuming it is simple.
Moving a ceiling point can mean opening a ceiling or a floor above, which changes the scope of the work considerably.
Whether an existing ceiling point can be moved or reused is for a qualified electrician to determine against the requirements that apply locally.
Record any cornice, beam, ceiling rose or decorative detail at or near the position, and photograph it before the discussion.
Existing detail often dictates where a fitting can sit and is regularly forgotten between the showroom and the room itself.
Note whether anything sits immediately above the position that people need to reach, such as a hatch, a tank or a service run.
A fitting placed under an access point creates a problem for whoever has to get up there afterwards.
4.How several fittings read together across a space
Multiples behave differently from a single fitting. Decide what governs their spacing before the number is settled.
Decide what the number of fittings is being driven by — the length of the surface below, the rhythm of the joinery, or simply an even look.
Stating the governing logic makes the arrangement defensible when something below it changes later.
Note the other lines the eye will compare a row against, such as window mullions, cabinet joints, beams or the edge of an island.
A row that is very slightly out of step with a nearby line looks like a mistake even when nobody can say why.
Decide and record whether fittings in a cluster hang at one height or at different heights, and what that decision is meant to achieve.
Staggered clusters read as deliberate only if the difference is clear; small differences usually read as an error.
Weigh a single larger fitting against several smaller ones, and note which option suits the way the surface below is actually used.
Several small fittings give more even light along a long surface but create more objects in a small room.
Ask the supplier what happens if one of a matched row is damaged or fails later, and whether the same finish can be obtained again.
Rows are hard to repair discreetly, and knowing this in advance may change how many you order.
Any replacement or alteration to a fitting in an existing row should be arranged through a qualified electrician.
Look at the position from the neighbouring room or hallway and note what part of the row is visible from there.
In open layouts a row is most often seen at an angle rather than square on, which is not how it is drawn.
5.The shade, the visible lamp and where the glare goes
A hung fitting sits in everyone's eyeline. Work out who sees into it before the shape is chosen.
Note whether the shade is open at the bottom, and consider who would be looking up into it from a seated or reclined position nearby.
An open shade that works over a worktop can be uncomfortable over a table people sit low at.
Sit in each usual seat and note whether the lamp inside the fitting would be directly visible, and at what angle.
Fittings are chosen standing in a showroom and lived with from a chair, which is where the disagreement starts.
Record whether the shade material is meant to glow, block light or do both, and note what the fitting is expected to light as a result.
A glowing shade adds presence but often puts very little usable light onto the surface below it.
Ask what the inside of the shade is finished in, since that surface decides much of the colour and spread of what comes out.
A metallic or coloured lining changes the character of the light more than the outside finish ever does.
Note where the fitting would appear in a window, mirror or glazed door after dark, and whether that reflection sits in anyone's eyeline.
A pendant near glass is effectively two pendants at night, and the reflected one is rarely where you want it.
Ask whether the fitting can be seen lit somewhere before you decide, and note what it looked like rather than what you expected.
Photographs of fittings are taken in conditions that have very little to do with a domestic room after dark.
6.Finish, colour and how the fitting looks switched off
A hung fitting spends much of its life unlit and fully visible. Judge it in that state as carefully as the other one.
Look at the position in daylight and decide what you want the fitting to do when it is off — recede quietly or read as an object.
Most hung fittings are seen unlit far more often than lit, which is the opposite of how they are chosen.
Write down every other metal finish that will be visible from the same spot, including handles, taps, sockets and door hardware.
Metals that seem close in a photograph often clash in a room, and the list is easier to compile before ordering.
Note the colour and finish the ceiling will have, and consider how the fitting and its ceiling plate would read against it.
A dark fitting on a dark ceiling can disappear entirely, which may be exactly right or a waste of the piece.
Ask what the visible flex, chain and ceiling plate look like, since these are frequently the least considered part of the fitting.
A carefully chosen shade hung on an unconsidered cable is one of the most common disappointments at handover.
Consider whether the finish shows dust, fingerprints or water marks, particularly over a table or a worktop where hands reach up.
Some finishes need attention far more often than others, which matters most in the rooms hardest to reach.
Decide whether fittings across the property share a finish family or are deliberately different, and record the reasoning either way.
Consistency by accident tends to look indecisive, while difference by decision usually reads as intended.
7.Settling the practical points with the supplier first
Several questions can only be answered by whoever supplies the fitting. Ask them before a decision is treated as final.
Ask whether the light source inside the fitting can be replaced by an electrician later, or whether the whole fitting is replaced when it fails.
This single answer changes how the fitting should be judged, particularly in positions that are difficult to reach.
Ask the supplier whether this particular fitting is made to be turned down at all, and hand that answer to the electrician without drawing conclusions from it.
Dimming is where fitting choice and electrical work meet, and the two conversations are usually held separately.
Whether this fitting can be turned down, and by what means, is for a qualified electrician to settle for your installation rather than for the household to arrange.
Ask what fixings and components come with the fitting and what the electrician is expected to provide separately.
Missing parts tend to be discovered on the day of fixing, which is the most disruptive moment to discover anything.
Ask how the fitting arrives, who opens it, and what the process is if a glass or ceramic part is damaged in transit.
Fragile fittings should be opened and looked at while everyone is still involved rather than on the day they go up.
Ask where the fitting should be kept before it goes up, and note who is responsible for it while it waits on site.
Fittings stored loose on a working site are damaged often enough that responsibility is worth agreeing in writing.
Keep everything supplied with the fitting, including the reference, the finish description and any information sheet, with your room records.
This paperwork is what allows a matching piece or a replacement part to be found long after the project ends.

Having these to hand usually makes the first conversation shorter and more useful.
- Photographs of each proposed position taken from the doorway and from the usual seats
- A note of what sits beneath every hung position and whether it is fixed
- Supplier information for each fitting, including finish description and reference
- A sketch of the room with existing ceiling points and proposed positions marked
- Notes on any cornice, beam or ceiling detail at or near the positions
- The list of everything that has to pass beneath each fitting in normal use
Records
Decisions to record before work begins
Write these down in your own words, with the date, so everyone is working from the same version.
- Which object each hung fitting is aligned to when the room and the surface disagree
- Whether each position carries a single larger fitting or several smaller ones
- What the fitting is expected to do when switched off as well as when lit
- Which finish family the fittings across the property belong to, or why they differ
- Whether a cluster hangs at one height or at deliberately different heights
- Which positions are settled and which are still open to advice
Professional review
Questions to discuss with qualified professionals
Bring these to the relevant qualified professional, supplier or authority. Requirements vary by project and location.
- What can this ceiling support at this position, and what would you need to establish that
- What would moving the existing ceiling point here actually involve
- Is this fitting intended to be dimmed, and what would that require in this installation
- How would this fitting be reached for cleaning or replacement once everything is finished
- At what point does the drop have to be final, and who decides it on the day
- Would you hang this at the height I have suggested, and if not, why not
- What would you like me to send you about this fitting, and by which stage of the work
- Which parts of this fitting are replaceable later and which are not
Blind spots
Commonly overlooked items
- The visible flex, chain and ceiling plate, which are rarely chosen with the same care as the shade
- How the fitting reads when seen at an angle from the neighbouring space
- What appears in the window reflection once it is dark outside
- Whether the surface below is likely to move or be replaced during the same project
- The change of ceiling height that runs through many open-plan spaces
- Who is responsible for a fragile fitting while it waits on a working site
