1.What this household actually watches and listens to
The right screen position follows from how the room is really used, and that is worth establishing before any wall is chosen.
Write down what the screen is genuinely used for, whether that is background television, films watched properly, gaming or showing something to a room full of people.
Each of those uses wants a different distance, height and level of darkness, and naming them stops one being optimised for by accident.
Note how often more than one person is watching at once, and whether they take the same seats every time or spread across the room.
The number of seats that must have a good view is the single requirement that most often forces a layout to bend.
Consider whether anyone plays games with a controller, since that usually means sitting closer and needing somewhere for handsets and cables within reach.
Gaming positions are rarely mentioned in a brief and then become the reason a cable runs across the floor.
Record whether music is listened to seriously in this room or only kept on in the background, because that changes where sound equipment needs to sit.
Serious listening puts demands on seating position and speaker placement that background listening simply does not.
Note whether the room ever doubles as somewhere to work or take video calls, and what that would need beside the screen or instead of it.
A room that hosts calls needs a considered background and different lighting, and both are easier to plan now.
Ask everyone who uses the room what they would miss if the screen were smaller, higher or further away, and write the answers down before deciding.
Disagreements are far easier to settle in a conversation than in finished joinery.
2.Where a screen could go without the room bending around it
Most living rooms have only two or three honest options once the fixed features are taken into account.
Mark every wall a screen could physically occupy, then strike out the ones ruled out by a radiator, a window, a door swing or a projecting breast.
The shortlist is usually far shorter than owners expect, which makes the remaining conversation much simpler.
Consider whether the only available screen wall sits directly beside or opposite the main window, since that arrangement is fought against for most of the day.
A bright window in the same field of view as a screen is the most common reason a curtain gets closed at midday.
Note whether a screen above a fireplace would mean every seat looking upward, and ask the appliance installer and manufacturer what conditions they allow there.
Height above a fire is a comfort question and a heat question at the same time, and only one of them is yours to answer.
The appliance installer and the screen manufacturer are the only parties who can say what may sit over a heat producing appliance in this room.
Write down whether the screen must be visible from a dining table or a kitchen as well, because that requirement quietly reshapes the whole arrangement.
Screens asked to serve two rooms usually end up serving neither one comfortably.
Consider a position where the screen is not the first thing seen from the doorway, and note what that would take away from viewing comfort.
Owners often want the screen to disappear when it is off, and that wish competes directly with the most comfortable viewing position.
Ask whether the screen could stand on a low unit rather than be fixed to a wall, and ask a qualified trade which walls here could take a fixing at all.
Hollow walls, old plaster and hidden services all affect what is possible, and none of it is visible from the room.

3.Reflections, glare and a dark screen seen in daylight
A screen is a mirror whenever it is switched off and often when it is on, and the room decides what it reflects.
Sit in each seat during the brightest part of the day and note which windows appear reflected in a dark screen, a glazed picture or a television already in place.
This is the one test that needs no equipment and reliably eliminates a position before anything is ordered.
Note whether a lamp or a pendant would land in the screen reflection once the room is used after dark, since evening glare is a different problem from daytime glare.
Lighting and screen position have to be resolved together, and doing so late usually means moving the lighting.
Consider what window covering would be needed at the times the screen is unwatchable, and be honest about whether the household would actually close it.
A solution that depends on a daily habit nobody has is not really a solution.
Record whether the wall behind the screen would be light or dark, and note how strong the contrast around a bright screen feels in the evening.
A bright screen against a very dark wall tires the eyes, and a pale wall changes how the room reads when the screen is off.
Note whether the proposed position would sit in direct sunlight at any point, and confirm with the manufacturer what conditions their product is made for.
Heat and direct light affect equipment as well as viewing, and the maker is the only reliable source on that.
What conditions a particular screen tolerates should be confirmed with its manufacturer or supplier rather than assumed.
Ask whether any planned mirror, glass cabinet door or picture would sit where it reflects the screen straight back into the room.
Reflected screens in the corner of the eye are distracting, and they are almost never spotted on a drawing.
4.Cables, sockets and the boxes nobody wants to see
The equipment is easy to picture and the wiring behind it is what actually decides the joinery.
List every device that would need power near the screen, including the ones added since the last time anybody counted them.
The list is almost always longer than remembered, and the count is what an electrician will ask for first.
Note where the aerial, satellite or data connection currently enters the room, and ask what moving it would involve before assuming the screen can go elsewhere.
The existing entry point often decides the simplest and least disruptive screen wall without anyone realising it.
Moving or extending an aerial, data or power connection is work for the relevant qualified trade to advise on and carry out.
Ask a qualified electrician what they would need to know in order to discuss socket positions behind and beside a screen in a room like this one.
Bringing their questions to the first meeting shortens the conversation considerably.
Socket and circuit decisions in this room are for a qualified electrician to determine against the requirements that apply locally.
Decide whether equipment should sit behind a closed door, and ask the equipment supplier whether remote controls would still work through it.
Concealment and control are in tension, and suppliers can usually answer this immediately.
Consider where the router currently sits and whether moving the screen would strand it, since the two are more connected than they look.
Many media problems turn out to be network problems caused by a piece of equipment left behind in the old position.
Note the cable routes you would like inside walls or joinery, and record them as a request for the joiner and electrician rather than as a decision.

5.Sound made in this room and sound reaching the next
Evening viewing is heard well beyond the room it happens in, and that is worth raising before the layout closes.
Note which rooms sit beyond the proposed screen wall and directly above the living room, since those are the ones that hear the evening.
A bedroom on the other side of the screen wall changes what is reasonable to plan there.
Consider whether anyone sleeps within earshot at the hours the room is used, and note what that has meant in practice so far.
Existing household habits are the most reliable evidence available and it takes nothing to gather.
Record whether headphones already solve this in practice, and whether the household would accept that as the permanent arrangement.
Naming the current workaround stops an elaborate solution being designed for a problem already solved.
Ask a qualified professional what could reasonably be done about sound travelling through this particular wall or floor, and what it would involve.
Sound transfer depends on construction that cannot be judged from the room side.
Any measure intended to reduce sound transfer between rooms should be specified by a qualified professional for this construction.
Note whether the room echoes when it is empty of curtains and rugs, because a hard room makes speech on a screen noticeably harder to follow.
Soft finishes are often the simplest improvement to intelligibility and are decided at the same time as everything else.
Consider where separate speakers would stand or be fixed if they were used, and whether those positions conflict with the seating already settled.
Speakers need floor or wall that furniture usually wants, and the clash is easier to resolve on paper.
6.How far away, how high, and the neck that pays for it
Comfort here is personal, so the useful work is testing and asking rather than applying a rule read somewhere.
Sit where people really sit and note whether you would look level, upward or downward at the proposed position, since necks report the answer quickly.
An owner sitting in the actual seat learns more in a minute than a drawing can show.
Ask the supplier what viewing distance they consider suitable for the screen you are weighing up, rather than applying a rule you have read elsewhere.
Suitable distance varies with the equipment, and the supplier is the party who can speak to their own product.
Viewing distance and mounting height should be confirmed with the equipment supplier and installer for the specific product.
Consider whether the same height suits a deep sofa, an upright chair and a child on the floor, because one wall position rarely serves all three.
Households with mixed seating heights are the ones most likely to regret a fixed high position.
Note whether anyone in the household habitually watches lying down, which changes the comfortable height more than any other habit.
This habit is rarely volunteered and quietly determines whether a wall mounted position works.
Record whether a bracket that tilts or swings would rescue a compromise position, and ask what fixing that would need in this wall.
Movement in the bracket can reconcile two seating positions that otherwise cannot both be served.

7.Equipment that changes and a plan that has to outlive it
Joinery lasts far longer than the devices it is built around, which is an argument for tolerance rather than precision.
Assume the screen will be replaced long before the joinery is, and record whether a recess or shelf would still work with a different shape of screen.
A niche cut tightly to one product becomes the reason the next one cannot be bought.
Ask the joiner how much tolerance they would leave around equipment, and record what they say rather than specifying a snug fit yourself.
Makers have their own view on tolerance, and asking for it is more useful than dictating a gap.
Note which connections the household relies on today and ask suppliers whether they expect those to continue being supported.
Connection types change quietly, and a media wall built around one of them ages badly.
Consider whether the arrangement still works if the household stops using a separate receiver or box entirely, since many rooms already have.
Designing for fewer devices rather than more is usually the safer direction to be wrong in.
Ask the manufacturer what air space their equipment needs if it is to sit inside an enclosed cabinet, and pass that answer to the joiner.
Enclosed equipment is a common cause of trouble, and the maker is the party who can answer it.
Ventilation requirements for enclosed equipment must come from the manufacturer and the installer rather than from a general assumption.
8.What to put in writing before joinery is drawn
A media wall is easier to design from a short written brief than from a conversation nobody wrote down.
Write down the screen position you have settled on together with the reason for it, so a later revision has something to argue against.
Positions drift during design, and a stated reason is what makes the drift visible.
List the devices the joinery must accommodate today and mark which of them the household expects to stop using.
A joiner designing around a list can allow for the pieces that matter and ignore the ones on the way out.
Record which questions about power, aerial and data remain open, and note who you intend to ask about each of them.
Keeping the unanswered questions together stops them being quietly resolved by whoever is on site first.
Note the date of the cardboard test and what it changed about your thinking, since that note is the most persuasive part of the brief.
Evidence gathered in the actual room carries more weight in a design meeting than a preference stated in the abstract.
Keep the photographs taken from each seat alongside the brief, because they explain a position far faster than a written paragraph does.
Images from the real seats give a designer the constraints without needing them to visit first.
