This is general planning preparation. These situations need a qualified professional, and often the relevant authority.

1.The kinds of damage this material tends to show
Materials fail in characteristic ways rather than at random. Asking which way this one goes tells you what a repair conversation will eventually be about.
Ask which kinds of damage are common with this material, whether chipping, denting, scorching, staining or simply wearing thin, and which of those can be undone.
Every material has a typical failure, and knowing it early lets you compare shortlisted options on the same footing.
Walk the room and note the points where knocks actually happen, such as the corner nearest a doorway or the edge beside a bin.
Damage concentrates at a handful of predictable positions rather than spreading evenly across an area.
Ask whether damage tends to stay where it started or spread, for example a chipped edge that continues to break away once opened.
A spreading failure turns a cosmetic issue into a replacement decision, which is worth knowing before choosing.
Find out whether this material wears gradually across a whole area or fails suddenly in one spot, since that changes what repair even means.
Gradual wear is usually addressed by refinishing a whole area, while a sudden local failure raises a matching problem instead.
Ask what happens if water reaches the back or underside of this material, and how you would notice that from the visible face.
Hidden water damage is often advanced by the time it shows, and the early signs differ by material.
Suspected water behind a finish should be raised with a qualified professional rather than investigated by opening the surface up.
Describe plainly to the supplier what daily life here involves, including children, pets, wheeled furniture or work equipment, and ask how the material copes.
A supplier can only advise usefully against the actual use, not against a general idea of a household.
Whether a material suits your use is for the manufacturer and a qualified professional to confirm, not a showroom impression.
2.Mended in place or lifted out and replaced
This single question separates a minor inconvenience from a small building job. It is asked far more often after the damage than before the order.
Ask whether a repair to this material is normally carried out in position or by taking out and replacing the affected piece.
Some materials can be filled, sanded or refinished where they sit, and others cannot be touched without removal.
Find out what replacing one piece disturbs around it, including neighbouring pieces, sealant lines, trims and any fixings.
The area affected by a repair is usually larger than the damage, and that difference is the real disruption.
Ask whether the material is bonded, clipped, floated or mechanically fixed, and how that method affects lifting a single piece.
The fixing method decides whether a piece can be taken up at all, and what condition the background is left in.
Discuss whether the room stays usable while a repair is carried out, or whether the area has to be kept clear and untouched.
Living arrangements during a repair matter most in a kitchen, a bathroom or a single stair route.
Ask whether a repaired area has to be left alone before normal use resumes, and what the manufacturer states about that.
Adhesives, fillers and finishes have their own conditions, and ignoring them is a common way a good repair is spoiled.
Conditions for curing, drying and returning to use are set by the manufacturer of the products involved and should be obtained in writing.
Find out whether repair is impractical in certain positions, such as beneath a fitted unit, behind a fixed appliance or under a bath.
Some positions are effectively permanent once the room is finished, which is worth knowing while the layout can still change.
3.Getting at the material without wrecking its surroundings
Reaching a damaged piece is often the hard part. What sits on top of a finish, and what hides behind it, decides how difficult that will be.
Note which pieces would be trapped by something fitted on top of them, such as units, a bath panel, a fixed shelf or a heavy appliance.
A trapped piece cannot be exchanged without dismantling whatever holds it, which few owners anticipate at layout stage.
Ask whether pipework, wiring or ducting runs behind or beneath this finish, and who should be consulted before any part of it is opened up.
What is behind a finish is rarely visible afterwards, and the answer belongs in your written record.
Anything concealing pipework, wiring or ducting must be discussed with a qualified professional before it is disturbed.
Ask whether anything above or beside the material, such as a worktop, a trim or a coving, would have to come off to reach a damaged piece.
Items removed for access often cannot be refitted without marks, so the repair spreads outwards.
Find out what condition the background is left in when a bonded piece is taken up, and what preparation it would then need.
Removing a bonded piece frequently damages the background, which becomes a second job nobody planned for.
Consider whether an access panel or a removable section is worth discussing now, and where one could sit without being obvious.
Access provision is straightforward to design in and awkward to introduce once a room is finished.
Where access provision is needed, and how it is formed, should be settled with a qualified professional for your particular situation.
Ask for photographs of what lies behind or beneath the finish before it is closed up, and keep them with your project record.
A photograph taken on the day answers questions that would otherwise require opening the finish to answer.
4.Spare material and how long it stays obtainable
The most useful repair decision is made before installation, when material from the same production is still standing in the room.
Ask whether spare material can be held back from the same production, and what quantity makes sense for this material and this area.
Spare pieces from the original supply are the only ones certain to match what is on the floor.
Find out how long this product is likely to remain available in this colour and finish, and what the supplier does when a line changes.
Product ranges are revised regularly, and a colour that exists today may not exist in the same form later.
Ask whether a discontinued product usually has a close successor, and how close such matches turn out to be in practice.
A near match placed beside the original often reads worse than a deliberate difference would.
Ask what conditions spare material should be stored in, and whether a loft, a garage or a shed would alter it.
Temperature, damp and light can change stored material so that it no longer matches when it is finally needed.
Ask the manufacturer what conditions spare material needs in storage rather than accepting whatever space happens to be free.
Find out whether the fixings, adhesive, grout, sealant or finishing product used are also worth noting or keeping, not only the visible material.
A repair usually needs the same background products, and those are the details nobody writes down.
Agree at handover who holds the spare material, where it is kept and who in the household knows it exists.
Spare pieces are most often lost in the tidy-up rather than used, simply because nobody was told about them.
5.Who carries out a repair and who you call first
When something is damaged, the delay is usually spent working out who to contact. That can be settled while everyone is still on site.
Ask who you would contact first if this material is damaged after completion, and whether that is the installer, the supplier or the manufacturer.
Supply, fabrication and installation are often three separate businesses, and each will point at the others.
Find out whether repairing this material is specialist work or something a general trade would handle competently.
Some materials have a small pool of people who work on them, which is worth knowing before you depend on one.
Ask whether the person who installed the material would come back for a repair, and how that would be arranged.
An installer who is willing to return is worth more than a marginal difference in the original arrangement.
Ask whether an attempted repair by anyone other than an approved party affects the manufacturer guarantee on this product.
Well-meant filler or polish applied early can close off a proper repair later.
What a guarantee covers, and what voids it, is set out in the manufacturer terms and should be read in full before any repair is attempted.
Collect the contact details of the supplier, fabricator and installer while the work is still going on, and store them with the product information.
Contact details are easy to gather during the work and surprisingly hard to reconstruct afterwards.
Ask what evidence a manufacturer usually wants when damage is reported, such as photographs, the batch reference or proof of who installed it.
Knowing what will be asked for lets you keep it from the start rather than search for it under pressure.
6.Repairs that show and repairs that disappear
Repairability is often described in absolute terms. What matters is how the repaired area looks and behaves next to material that has been in use.
Ask to see an example of a completed repair in this material, in daylight, rather than a description of how good repairs can be.
Repairs photograph much better than they look in the room, and daylight is where the difference shows.
Find out whether a repaired area behaves the same afterwards, for instance whether it takes a seal, a polish or a cleaner in the same way.
A repair that looks right but reacts differently to cleaning becomes visible again once the surface has been cleaned a number of times.
Ask whether a new piece set among older ones will stand out because the surrounding material has aged, faded or worn.
Matching to the original reference is not the same as matching to material that has lived in the room.
Consider whether a whole section, run or panel would be replaced rather than a single piece, and what that would mean for the room.
For some materials the honest answer is that a run is replaced, which changes how you weigh the choice now.
Ask whether matching a repair depends on the surrounding material being cleaned first, and whether cleaning changes the comparison.
A match judged against a dirty surface is a match that stops working after the next deep clean.
Ask whether the repair being described is intended to make the damage disappear or simply to stop it getting worse.
Both are legitimate, but they are different promises, and owners often hear the more optimistic one.
7.The record a future repair depends on
Most repairs are delayed by missing information rather than by the work itself. A short record made now removes that delay entirely.
Write down what each material is, where it was supplied from and what was used to fix it down, and keep those three things together.
The fixing method is as important as the material when someone has to take a piece up.
Keep offcuts labelled with the room and position they came from, rather than as a general pile of leftovers.
If more than one batch or finish was used in the house, an unlabelled offcut is of little use.
Record any manufacturer instructions about repair, including anything they state should not be attempted on this product.
Manufacturer repair guidance is often the shortest and most useful document in the whole handover pack.
Repair guidance issued by the manufacturer takes precedence over general advice and should be obtained for the specific product.
Photograph the finish while it is new and undamaged, in ordinary daylight, so any later comparison has a starting point.
A before-damage photograph settles arguments about whether something was always like that.
Note which products were applied on site to seal, oil, wax or finish the material, since a repair often needs the same ones.
Site-applied finishes are the detail most often forgotten, and the one that makes a patch obvious.
Tell everyone who lives here what to do first if something is damaged, including what not to apply to it in the meantime.
The first well-intentioned response to damage frequently makes the professional repair harder.

- Manufacturer care and repair information for each shortlisted material
- Written guarantee terms, including anything about who may carry out a repair
- Contact details for the supplier, fabricator and installer kept in one place
- Photographs of what lies behind or beneath a finish before it is closed up
- A note of the fixings, adhesives, sealants and site-applied finishes used
- Product references, finish names and batch information for every material
Records
Decisions to record before work begins
Write these down in your own words, with the date, so everyone is working from the same version.
- Which spare pieces are being kept, in what quantity and where they are stored
- Who the household contacts first if a particular material is damaged
- Whether any access provision was designed in, and where it sits
- What the household has agreed not to apply to a damaged surface before advice
- Which materials were accepted knowing that a whole run would be replaced
- Who holds the written product and guarantee information after handover

Blind spots
Commonly overlooked items
- The area disturbed by a repair is nearly always larger than the damage itself.
- Pieces trapped beneath fitted units or fixed appliances cannot be exchanged without dismantling.
- A new piece may not match surrounding material that has aged, even when it matches the original reference.
- Site-applied oils, waxes and sealers are rarely recorded, yet a repair usually needs the same product.
- Spare material is more often lost in a tidy-up than used, because nobody was told it existed.
- The first well-meant attempt to fix damage can rule out a proper repair afterwards.
