1.The routes people already walk
A garden shows you its paths before anybody designs them. The worn line is evidence, and it is more reliable than anything decided at a table.
Walk the plot and note where the grass is worn thin or the soil compacted, because that line is the route people will take whatever is built elsewhere.
A path laid against an established route is walked around rather than along, and the worn line simply reappears beside it.
Record where the bins, the barrow and the mower already travel, including the awkward turn nobody thinks about until it has been surfaced.
Working routes are the ones that decide the surface, and they are usually left out when an owner describes a path.
Note which routes are walked after dark and which are only used in good light, since the two are chosen differently.
A route used at night has to be legible without thinking about it, which affects surface, edges and where it changes level.
Consider whether this path is meant to be the quickest way somewhere or a slower route that shows the garden off, and say which it is.
A path with two jobs usually fails at the practical one, and stating the intention early keeps the shape honest.
Write down where deliveries arrive and how far somebody then carries a parcel, a sack or a bag of fuel from that point.
The carrying distance from the gate or the kerb is a fixed fact about the property and belongs in the brief.
Record which routes visitors use and which only the household uses, because the two often want quite different surfaces.
The arrival route is walked by people in whatever shoes they came in, while the working route is walked in boots by someone carrying something.
2.Who uses the route and what they push or pull
The demands on a path come from its heaviest and least steady user, not its average one. Both are worth naming before any surface is discussed.
List everything with wheels that would travel along this route, including bins, barrows, bicycles, mowers, pushchairs and wheelchairs.
Wheels are unforgiving about surface and about the junctions at each end, and the list is usually longer than an owner first says.
Note the heaviest thing that would regularly be moved along it, and whether one person moves it alone or two people are needed.
A route that only works with two people is one that will be used badly, and it shows in how the surface wears.
Consider whether anyone using this route walks with a stick, a frame or uncertain footing, and treat their needs as the governing ones.
Access needs are individual, and only a qualified professional who knows the person can advise on whether a route works for them.
Write down whether children cycle or scooter along the path, where they would be building up speed and where they would be stopping.
Play routes want a continuous surface and a clear end point, which is a different brief from a route to a shed.
Record whether the path is used while carrying something with both hands, such as a tray, a log basket or a full watering can.
Carrying with both hands rules out anything that has to be negotiated, and it is the test that finds hidden steps and narrow turns.
Ask whether this route could ever have to take a vehicle, even once for a delivery or a piece of equipment, and raise it as a question.
What a path surface is able to carry, including any vehicle crossing it, is for a qualified professional to establish.
3.Width, passing places and where a route pinches
Paths are drawn as one width throughout and then lived with at their narrowest point. That point is usually visible on the ground today.
Walk the route beside another person and note every place where you would have to fall into single file.
The pinch points are what an owner can genuinely observe, and marking them gives a professional something specific to work with.
Note where planting would grow over the path in summer and reduce the width you actually walk on rather than the width that was built.
A route that works in winter and disappears in high summer is a common complaint, and it is a planting decision as much as a surface one.
Consider whether a gate, a corner or a step forces a turn that a full barrow simply could not be got around.
Turning space is what defeats working routes, and it is easier to test now with the barrow you already own.
Record where the path passes a door, a tap or a bin store, and whether somebody standing at any of them blocks the route entirely.
Paths that double as standing space need to be wider at those points, which is a modest change if raised early.
Write down whether the route needs to widen anywhere, such as at a gate, at a door or where people naturally stop to talk.
A path of one width throughout is easy to draw and rarely fits how a route is really used, so naming the wider points improves it.
Ask a professional what width suits the uses you have written down, rather than deciding it from what looks right on a plan.
Path widths, levels and any gradient on a route should be set by a qualified professional against the uses you have recorded.
4.The route after dark and in bad weather
Almost every path problem shows itself at night in the rain. Walking the existing route in those conditions is the most useful thing an owner can do here.
Walk the route after dark as it stands today and note every place you slow down, hesitate or reach out for something to hold.
Where you hesitate is where the design has to do something, and those points are never remembered from a walk in good light.
Consider how the route would be lit and record every part of that as a question rather than a decision you make yourself.
Nothing about lighting a route, including the supply feeding it, can be settled without a suitably qualified electrician.
Note where water already stands on the route after heavy rain, and mark each of those places on a sketch before anything is designed.
Standing water on a route is a symptom, and both its cause and its remedy are for a qualified professional to establish.
Ask each supplier to put in writing what is known about their surface underfoot in rain and frost, and keep those answers side by side.
What a surface does underfoot in rain and frost is for the maker and a qualified professional to state, and a dry sample shows none of it.
Record whether the route passes under trees that drop leaves, needles, blossom or berries onto it, and for how much of the season.
What falls on a path changes how it behaves underfoot, and a route under evergreens is a different case from one under a deciduous tree.
Write down whether the route is cleared in cold weather, by whom and with what, since some surfaces take a shovel or a spread material badly.
The clearing method is part of choosing the surface, and it is rarely mentioned until the first hard frost after the work is finished.
5.Edges, kerbs and holding the surface in
A path is defined by its two long edges. What sits against them decides how much upkeep the route needs and how well it holds its shape.
Note what sits along each side of the route for its whole length, whether that is lawn, planting, gravel, a wall or an open drop.
The edges usually change several times along a route, and each change is a detail somebody has to resolve.
Consider whether you want the path edge to be visible or to disappear into the planting, and say which before anything is set out.
A crisp edge is easier to keep and reads as more formal, and the preference is genuinely an owner decision.
Write down whether a mower could run cleanly along the edge or whether somebody would be trimming it by hand each time.
Hand trimming along a long route is the quiet upkeep burden that comes with a pretty edge, and it should be a knowing choice.
Record whether soil or mulch would wash onto the surface from a bed alongside it, particularly where the ground rises next to the route.
Material washing onto a path is what makes it green over and stay damp, and it usually comes from one identifiable stretch.
Ask what stops a loose or unbound surface creeping sideways at the edges, and record the answer rather than treating it as a choice of trim.
Edge construction is part of how a route is built, and it should be drawn by a qualified professional rather than picked from a range.
Note whether the route runs beside a drop, a pond or a raised bed, and raise that with a professional before anything is set out.
A route running past open water or a fall is a safety question for a qualified professional and for what applies locally, never an owner judgement.
6.Where the path meets steps, gates and doors
Routes rarely fail along their length. They fail at the junctions, which are also the places an owner can point at most precisely.
Record every place the route changes level, however slight, and treat each one as a question rather than a detail to be sorted out later.
Steps, ramps and changes of level on a route are for a qualified professional to design and to confirm against local requirements.
Note which way each gate along the route swings and whether the surface beneath it would foul the gate once everything has settled.
A gate that begins to catch on a path is a daily irritation, and the clearance question is easy to raise beforehand.
Consider what happens where the path meets the house, including the threshold, any covered area and the point where boots come off.
The last stretch before a door does most of the work, and it is often the piece that gets least thought.
Write down where the route crosses or meets a drive, and note that a crossing used by vehicles is a different question from a garden path.
Path and drive meet at a point that has to satisfy both, and keeping the two questions apart makes the conversation clearer.
Ask what happens where two routes meet, since junctions are where surfaces most often look unresolved and where wear concentrates.
The pattern, the edge and the drainage all have to turn a corner at once, which is why junctions deserve a drawing.
Record whether the surface should change at any point to signal that something is coming, such as a step, a gate or the end of the route.
A deliberate change underfoot is read before it is noticed, which is useful on a route walked in poor light.
7.Living with the surface afterwards
A path is walked in every condition and cleaned by whoever is willing. These prompts are about the stretch of time after everyone has gone home.
Decide who would sweep the route and how often, noting that a path under trees needs it many times more than one in the open.
Sweeping is what keeps a path behaving as intended, so an unassigned route ends up green in its shaded half.
Ask which cleaning methods each shortlisted surface tolerates, since a route tends to be cleaned by whoever is free with whatever is in the shed.
Take cleaning and treatment guidance from the maker of each surface, and involve a qualified professional where a route has already broken up.
Consider how the path would look with growth in the shaded stretch and none in the sunny one, since that contrast is normal rather than a failure.
Owners often read a green stretch as poor work, when it is simply the part of the route that never dries out.
Write down whether you would accept a route that settles slightly and moves with the ground, or want one that stays exactly as it was laid.
Different constructions behave differently over time, and stating a preference lets a professional explain what each involves.
Note whether the stretch that is out of sight has to match the arrival route, or whether something plainer would serve just as well there.
Splitting a long route lets the visible part be chosen for appearance and the working part for behaviour.
Note whether a small quantity of the surface material would be set aside for patching, and somewhere it could sit without spoiling.
A path is repaired in small patches, and a small quantity kept aside is what makes those patches invisible.

Having these to hand usually makes the first conversation shorter and more useful.
- A sketch of the plot with every walked route drawn on, including the worn lines
- Photographs of the existing routes after heavy rain and again after dark
- Notes on what travels each route and who moves it
- Anything the suppliers have published about how each shortlisted surface behaves in winter
- A list of every gate, step, threshold and junction along the route
- Notes on which stretches sit in shade and which are under overhanging planting

- Given what travels along this route, which surfaces would you rule out here?
- What width would you set for these uses, and where would you widen it?
- How would you deal with the place where water already stands on this route?
- What construction would a route like this need under it to behave in winter?
- How would you form the edges where the route runs beside planting and lawn?
- How would you handle the change of level partway along, and what applies there?
- Is there anything about this route that I should be raising with the local authority first?
- Where the route crosses the drive, what has to change there and who decides it?
Blind spots
Commonly overlooked items
- The worn line beside the path that shows nobody uses the route as drawn
- A turn that a full barrow cannot make between a gate and a corner
- Planting that halves the usable width for the whole of the summer
- The last stretch before the door where everything is carried and set down
- A hidden step partway along that only announces itself when both hands are full
- Nobody named to sweep the shaded stretch that greens over each winter
- No spare material kept, so the first repair patch never blends in
