This is general planning preparation. These situations need a qualified professional, and often the relevant authority.

- Locating pipes or cables inside a wall, which is work for the relevant qualified trades
- Judging whether covering a meter, valve or vent is acceptable, which is a matter for the responsible authority
- Specifying materials, hardware or construction, which belongs with the maker

1.What the wall and floor are already doing
Fitted storage takes its shape from surfaces that are rarely as flat or as level as they look. Record what is there before anybody is asked to work to an idea.
Look along each wall from one end and note where it bows, leans or steps, since a fitted run reveals every one of those movements as a gap or a taper.
A maker plans for wall movement by scribing and filling, and needs to know it exists before proposing an approach.
Note whether the floor rises or falls across the length of the proposed run, because a fitted unit set on an uneven floor shows the difference at the top rather than the bottom.
Older floors often move enough to change how a tall run has to be built and packed.
Decide whether the floor covering goes in before or after the storage, and raise the sequence with both trades rather than assuming either will wait for the other.
This single sequencing question determines whether a unit sits on the covering or the covering stops at it.
The order of trades and what each expects to find on arrival should be agreed with the maker and the flooring installer together, not decided by whoever turns up first.
Note whether the wall is an external one and whether it ever feels cold, musty or damp, and raise that before joinery is planned tightly against it.
Enclosing a wall changes how air moves across it, which matters for what can safely be kept there.
Cold, damp or condensation on a wall is a building question for a qualified professional to look at before fitted work is planned against that wall.
List anything already fixed along the intended run, such as a radiator, boxed pipework, an alarm panel or a wall-mounted screen, and ask who is responsible for moving each item.
Ownership of removals is one of the most common gaps between an owner and a maker.
Ask the maker what they need to know about how the wall is built, since fixing into different constructions is a different conversation with different consequences.
Makers usually establish this on site, but knowing it is a question saves an assumption being made in the meantime.
What a wall is made of, and what may be fixed into or removed from it, has to be established by suitably qualified people rather than assumed from tapping it.
2.Where the run starts, stops and turns a corner
Most disappointment with fitted storage comes from the edges rather than the middle. Decide the edges deliberately.
Decide whether the storage runs from wall to wall or stops short, and note what would sit in the leftover space if it stops.
Leftover slivers beside fitted runs collect clutter unless something is deliberately put there.
Decide whether the run continues to the ceiling or leaves a gap above, and be honest about whether anybody would ever clean or use that gap.
The gap above fitted storage is either useful, decorative or a dust shelf, and it is worth choosing which.
Note whether the run has to turn a corner or continue over a doorway, since these are the points where fitted schemes become complicated to build and to use.
Corner and over-door sections often hold far less than their volume suggests.
Where there are alcoves either side of a chimney breast, decide whether both are treated the same way, and note any difference between them in width or depth.
Paired alcoves are rarely identical, and symmetry has to be designed rather than assumed.
Note whether the run has to stop clear of a window reveal, curtain track, blind fitting or opening casement, and record what is fitted there now.
Window dressings are usually forgotten until the storage is already built up to them.
List anything behind or beneath the intended run that has to remain reachable, such as a stopcock, meter, gas point, consumer unit or floor hatch.
Access requirements shape the run and are far easier to accommodate now than to work around later.
Whether a meter, valve, hatch or panel may be enclosed at all is a question for the responsible supplier or authority and the relevant qualified trades, never an owner decision.
3.Fronts, openings and the space in front of them
How the storage opens depends less on taste than on what is standing opposite it.
Measure roughly how much clear space there is in front of the run and note what is opposite, because a hinged front needs room that a sliding one does not.
This measurement usually decides the front type before any style discussion begins.
Open the room door fully and note where it lands, then say whether it strikes or shadows the proposed run at any point along its swing.
A door that fouls a front is easy to establish now and awkward to resolve after making has started.
Mark which parts of the run have to be opened with hands full, in poor light, or by somebody who cannot pull hard, and say who that person is.
This rules out some otherwise attractive front and catch arrangements before they are drawn.
Note whether the run faces a bed, sofa, dining chair or radiator, and how far a front would travel into that space when open.
Rooms that work with the storage shut sometimes fail entirely with it open.
Ask the maker what front and catch options suit this run, how each is adjusted over time, and what happens when one stops working properly.
Adjustability and replacement matter more over the life of fitted storage than the initial feel.
Say whether anything inside the run would need power, and ask early where a cable would have to come from and at what point that must be decided.
Provision for power is a pre-construction decision rather than something added once fronts are hung.
Any power or lighting inside joinery has to be agreed with a qualified electrician before construction, and what is possible varies by location.
4.How the new work meets the existing room
The junctions are where owners and makers most often discover they assumed different things.
Ask what happens to the existing skirting where the run meets it, whether it is cut back, scribed to or removed, and who does that work.
Skirting treatment changes both the appearance and the depth the storage can achieve.
Look along the ceiling line above the run and note whether it dips or rises, then ask how any difference would be handled where the storage meets it.
A ceiling that is out of level shows immediately against a straight top rail.
Agree who makes good the wall and floor where anything is removed, and record that agreement in writing rather than leaving it to goodwill.
Making good sits in the gap between trades more often than any other item.
Establish where the maker stops and decorating begins, including whether fronts arrive finished and whether the surrounding wall gets painted afterwards.
Owners frequently expect a finished room and receive finished joinery in an unfinished one.
Note any architrave, dado or picture rail the run would meet, and ask whether it is cut, returned or left, since each looks quite different.
Trim junctions read as either deliberate or accidental, and there is no neutral option.
Ask how filler pieces and scribes will be handled where nothing is square, and where those will be visible from the usual position in the room.
Every fitted run has scribes somewhere, and knowing where they will fall avoids surprise.
5.Services, meters and what runs out of sight
Fixed storage puts fixings into walls and enclosures around things that may need reaching. Route each of these questions properly.
Ask what will be done to establish where pipes and cables run before any fixings are placed, and note what the maker expects you to arrange in advance.
Knowing whose responsibility this is prevents both parties assuming the other has handled it.
Locating pipes and cables within a wall is work for the relevant qualified trades using proper methods, not something to judge from socket positions.
List every socket, switch and outlet the run would cover, and ask who is responsible for moving them or making them reachable again.
Covered sockets are one of the most common late discoveries in fitted work.
Moving or altering any electrical point is work for a qualified electrician, and what applies to it depends on where the property is.
Note any radiator, pipe run or heating control within the intended storage, and ask who would reroute or relocate it and at what point in the sequence.
Heating alterations usually have to happen before joinery rather than around it.
Altering heating pipework, radiators or controls is work for a qualified heating engineer and should be discussed with them separately.
Note any air brick, grille, extract terminal or trickle vent on or near the wall, and raise how the storage would affect it.
Enclosing a ventilation path is easy to do accidentally and hard to detect afterwards.
Whether any ventilation opening may be covered or diverted is a question for a qualified professional and the relevant local requirements.
Note any loft hatch, service panel or bath panel above or beside the run that must still open fully, and say what it gives access to.
Hatches that no longer open properly become a problem only when something urgent needs reaching.
Ask which preparatory work must happen before the maker arrives, and agree who arranges each item and confirms it is done.
Sequencing failures usually appear as a wasted visit rather than as a design problem.
6.Living in the room while fitted work happens
Fitted storage is made in one place and finished in another, and the room has to absorb both.
Ask what has to be emptied out of the room and how far in advance, then decide where those contents will actually go in the meantime.
Contents with nowhere to go tend to be redistributed through the house and never fully returned.
Walk the route from the front door to the room and note every tight turn, low ceiling, tight stair and narrow landing along the way.
The delivery route often determines whether a run arrives in sections or is built entirely on site.
Ask whether the storage is made in a workshop and assembled here or built largely on site, and what each approach means for noise, dust and time in the room.
The two approaches feel completely different to live with and produce different finishes.
Agree who protects floors, doorways and adjoining rooms, and what standard of cleaning is expected at the end of each visit.
Dust travels far beyond the room being worked in and is easier to prevent than to remove.
Say whether the room has to stay usable while work is happening, and note which uses cannot be interrupted, such as sleeping or working.
This constraint changes how work is staged and should be stated before dates are discussed.
Ask what will be left for you to arrange afterwards, such as decorating, floor finishing, door adjustment or waste removal.
A clear handover boundary avoids a room that is nearly finished for a very long stretch.
7.Agreeing what the maker is and is not doing
The scope conversation is more valuable than the design conversation, and it is usually shorter.
Agree in writing what is included, naming removal, making good, decorating, hardware, lighting provision and waste, and note anything explicitly excluded.
Written inclusions turn later disagreements into a matter of reading rather than remembering.
Ask which drawings, samples or setting-out you will see before anything is cut, and what you are being asked to confirm at each point.
Knowing what you are confirming is what makes a confirmation meaningful.
Ask when the final measuring happens, what has to be finished in the room before it, and whether ordering follows that measurement rather than the drawings.
Measuring too early against unfinished surfaces is a frequent source of fit problems.
Agree how changes after drawings are handled and who must be told, so a small request does not quietly become a large one.
Change handling agreed in advance is far less strained than change handling invented mid-project.
Establish who is responsible for the dimensions the storage is made to, and record what you were asked to provide as against what was measured on site.
Owner-supplied measurements and site surveys carry different responsibility, and the distinction matters later.
Ask which parts of this discussion the maker will not cover, and note which trade or adviser each of those belongs with instead.
Makers usually know exactly where their scope ends, and asking directly saves a gap opening there.
Anything touching structure, services, ventilation or the relevant local requirements belongs with the appropriate qualified professional rather than with the joinery scope.

- Photographs of the wall including sockets, radiators and trim junctions
- A written list of what has to remain reachable behind or beneath the run
- Any existing drawings, service records or previous work information for the room
- Notes on the delivery route from the street to the room
- The written scope, inclusions and exclusions once agreed with the maker
Records

Write these down in your own words, with the date, so everyone is working from the same version.
- Whether the run goes wall to wall and whether it reaches the ceiling
- Which fronts open which way and what stands opposite them
- Who removes existing fixtures and who makes good afterwards

- What has to be emptied from the room and where it goes meanwhile
