Forming a Door or Hatch Opening in a Partition

An opening is the point where a partition stops being repetitive. The framing changes, the boarding pattern changes from full sheet to short pieces, and a swinging mass is introduced that works on the wall thousands of times. Cracking so often begins at a door head corner because that is where a wall's stiffness changes abruptly.

The same opening means two different things depending on the construction. In a framed partition it is a matter of trimming — additional members taking forces around the void and giving the lining something square and stiff to fix to. In masonry it is a small structural arrangement, because a wall that carries no building load still has to carry itself over a hole.

Where the stiffness changes

Boards and framing are not independent. Boards stop slender studs buckling and twisting, and studs keep boards flat; weaken either and the other stops working. An opening removes both at once over a local area, which is why cutting a large opening into a finished face changes the wall rather than just the surface.

That is also why a partition boarded on a single face behaves differently from the same framing boarded on both, and why the effect of an opening is not proportional to its size alone.

Trimming in a framed wall

What a doorset does to the wall

A door frame is subject to repeated dynamic loading in a way a window frame is not. The door's weight acts through the hinges, the forces of use act on the frame at the hinge side, and any looseness there shows quickly. Frames working loose in the opening are at least as common a cause of door problems as hinges.

A frame has to be fixed square and plumb, because a distorted frame is not correctable by adjusting the door. Where a door is required to resist fire, the leaf, frame, seals and hardware are one assembly and the certification applies to the whole of it.

Hatches and small openings

Whether a small opening needs trimming depends on what it interrupts, not on how it looks. A hatch through a partition still breaks the board face, still interrupts whatever the cavity contains, and still has to be closed at its edges.
