Planning Fixings and Backing in a Framed Wall

Every framed wall reaches a moment when the linings go on and its inside becomes unknowable. Before that moment, putting solid backing wherever something will later be hung costs almost nothing. After it, the finished face tells you nothing about what is behind it, and a heavy fixing becomes guesswork.

This guide is about getting ahead of that moment. It sets out where fixings actually land in each kind of framed construction, what has to be decided before the cavity closes, and why the record made at that point behaves as part of the wall rather than as paperwork.

It states no fixing capacity, spacing or section. What any fixing will carry in a given wall is a matter for the fixing manufacturer's documentation and the designer, and nothing here indicates that anything may be hung anywhere.

The window closes once, and it closes quietly

The framed partition entry puts it plainly: the moment the cavity is closed governs everything that can be put into it, so infill, services and concealed backing all compete for the same window, and anything unresolved by then becomes either a change to the programme or a permanent omission that nobody can see.

That last phrase is the important one. An omitted piece of backing does not fail an inspection, does not look wrong and does not announce itself. It is discovered by somebody with a drill, years later.

What a noggin actually is, and its three unrelated jobs

A short member fixed between two parallel framing members does one of three things depending on where it is: it stops slender members twisting, it gives a board edge something to fix to, or it provides solid backing for something attached later. The published entry notes the three jobs are unrelated to each other.

The consequence is direct. A wall can have plenty of noggins and still lack one where a heavy fitting needs support, because the ones already there were put in for the other two reasons.

Timber and light steel frames: backing is fabricated, not added

In a timber platform frame, fixings for kitchens, sanitaryware, guarding, stairs and heavy wall-hung items land back on framing members whose positions were set for structural reasons, so where they need to go is worth establishing before the linings close the frame in.

Light steel framing makes the point harder still, because heavy fixings cannot rely on a thin section: backing or noggings are added during fabrication, and where those are needed has to be known before the panels are made. The fabrication model then records where every stud, hole and piece of backing sits.

Structural insulated panels: the fixing question becomes a zone question

Because the panel is structure and insulation at the same time, services have nowhere neutral to go, which is why the inboard batten zone exists. A chase cut into a panel removes facing, core and sealing at the same place, so the service zone is not an extra layer added for convenience.

The fixing question therefore splits in two. Light items go to the zone; the entry asks directly which fixings will be too heavy for the service zone, and where they will reach the structure instead. That is a question with a deadline, because the panel layout is settled before manufacture.

Insulating concrete formwork: the ties are the map

In an insulating formwork wall the internal ties hold the faces apart during the fill, and afterwards those same positions become the map of where a handrail, a kitchen run or a cladding rail can be attached, because the faces have no holding power of their own.

The entry is explicit that the layout has to be established and recorded before the fill, since the finished building is planned to it and a fixing decided late has nowhere to go except into the core. A fixing into the face is not a fixing into the structure, and only the product's documentation says what a face can carry.

Mass timber and precast: the hole was part of the manufacturing information

Where the structure is a manufactured plate, penetrations and recesses belong to the model rather than to the site. A hole that was drawn is made in a controlled way within a plate designed for it; a hole that was not drawn is cut on site through a load-carrying element, and in mass timber often through a surface intended to remain visible.

Precast is the same argument with the added point that fixings are cast in. The entry records that kitchens, sanitaryware, services and guarding all have to be known before production, and that late requirements are met by cutting into units rather than by adjusting them.

Linings over an existing wall: what a fixing reaches depends on the support

A lining held off a wall behaves differently again. A shelf screwed to a bonded lining loads the adhesive and the wall behind it; the same shelf on a framed lining loads the frame; on a battened lining it loads whichever batten it happens to catch. The finished face announces none of this.

The batten entry adds the design consequence: anything later fixed through the lining can only be fixed where a batten is, and that is decided before the lining goes on. A folded metal channel gives a fixing thin metal rather than solid material to land in.

The record is the component

The published partition entry makes an unusual claim and means it: concealed backing turns an ordinary partition into one that can actually be used, and its value is destroyed as easily by omitting it as by installing it and never recording where it went. The record made at boarding stage therefore behaves as part of the assembly in a way no other component does.

Photographs of each wall before boarding, keyed to the room and the elevation, are the cheapest version of that record. A drawing marked up with backing positions is better. Either is worth more than remembering.

  • Fixing into the face of an insulating formwork wall as though the face were the structure.
  • Deciding a kitchen layout after panels have gone into fabrication or units into production.
  • Recording nothing at boarding stage, so a wall with backing and a wall without look identical.
  • Treating a chase as finishing work, when cutting into a wall is a change to the element.

  • What any fixing will carry in a given wall is a matter for the fixing manufacturer's documentation and the designer, and nothing here states a capacity.
  • Whether a member may be notched, drilled or cut is a determination for the structural designer and, in manufactured construction, the supplier.

Why can I not just add backing later?

Because reaching the cavity means taking a finished face off. The lining, the jointing and the decoration all sit over it, and in panelised or manufactured construction the backing was part of what was made rather than something fixed on site, so there is nothing to add it to.

From a record made before it was closed, which is why that record matters so much. The finished faces of a partition with concealed backing and one without are identical, and nothing about the surface distinguishes them once the jointing and decoration are complete.
