Keeping the Hoist Beam, the Rail, the Loading Door

Keeping the physical traces of the former use rather than tidying them away, and accepting that a hoist beam or a rail sits where the work put it, so the plan bends around the object instead of the object being removed to suit the plan.

  • These are not decorative features: a hoist beam is usually in the wrong place for a room, and keeping it costs something in the plan
  • What the object is fixed to, and what it can still carry, is a question for a structural engineer before anything is hung from it or built against it
  • A loading door can stay a door, become a window, or become a shutter in front of new glazing, and each choice reads differently from outside
  • Retained items in circulation or at head height have to be safe to live with, which may mean moving the route rather than the object
