What a New Finish Inherits From the Wall Behind It

Almost every complaint about a decorated room is a complaint about the wall underneath it. Patches that reappear as ghosted rectangles. Colour that reads unevenly across one plane. A sheen that flashes where a repair was made. A coating that lifts. A texture that shows through a thin finish. In each case the product performed as it does, and what it was applied to decided the result.

What passes through is a short list. Suction, which is how thirstily the background drinks the binder out of whatever is applied. Soundness, meaning whether the surface is stable enough to carry a coating that bonds into it. Contamination, from old adhesive, residues, staining and salts. And the existing coating, which decides what will bond at all.

This guide sets out how each of those reappears across the finish families, so the question can be asked before a product is chosen rather than afterwards. It diagnoses nothing. Suction is the property that decides most outcomes

A thirsty wall drinks the binder out of a film and leaves a patchy, chalky result; a sealed or glossy surface gives the film very little to grip on. Suction also has to be consistent across a plane, because patchy absorption shows as patchy colour, and that is most visible in exactly the deep matt finishes people choose for their evenness.

This is why patch repairs reappear. A repaired area and the wall around it rarely share the same absorbency, and priming the repairs is what stops them showing through the finished colour once light falls across the wall.

A thin finish hides nothing, and often exaggerates

Some finishes level a wall and some decorate one that was already flat. Lining paper evens out minor variation and follows the plane of the wall; it will not straighten a background that is genuinely out of true. A thin burnished decorative layer conceals nothing and can exaggerate what is underneath, because the background does the levelling and the finish only decorates.

The practical consequence is that the standard of preparation expected is set by the finish. A deeply matt mineral coating makes wall flatness more visible, not less, so plastering standards matter more under it than they would under a sheened paint.

What is already on the wall decides what can go over it

This is the question people skip. A mineral coating that bonds by reacting with the surface cannot bond into a surface already sealed by a film. A film-forming paint applied over a soft, water-soluble historic coating is a recognised route to adhesion failure. A sealer applied over unidentified existing coatings is a compatibility gamble rather than preparation.

So the honest first step is establishing what is there rather than assuming. How that was established, and recording the answer, is worth as much as the answer itself, because the next decorator will otherwise assume the ordinary case and prepare accordingly.

Preparation coatings are substrate-led, not a default extra

Sealers reduce and equalise absorbency on thirsty or variable backgrounds. Bonding primers give adhesion on smooth or difficult surfaces. Stain-blocking products hold back discolouration that would otherwise bleed through. They are different intentions, and the correct product on plaster is not the correct product on timber, glossed joinery or masonry.

They are also part of a system. Where a finish manufacturer names a preparatory product, mixing brands or families across the build-up introduces a compatibility question nobody wants to meet later, and uneven priming shows through as patchy sheen or colour once the finish is on.

A sealer manages absorbency and does not manage damp

Applying a sealer over a wall with a moisture problem conceals a symptom while the underlying problem carries on behind it. Lining paper hung over an unresolved cause simply moves that cause behind a fresh layer. Neither is preparation; both are postponement.

Peeling, blistering or staining can indicate a wider problem, and covering the surface addresses nothing underneath. Where damp is suspected, the sequence is investigation first and finish selection afterwards.

New plaster, and the condition a finish expects

Painting new plaster before the wall is ready produces problems that are then attributed to the paint. Wet toppings and screeds introduce a great deal of water into a building and take time to leave it, and laying an impermeable finish too early is a recognised cause of failure on floors for the same reason.

What condition a given finish expects, and how that is judged, belongs to the product documentation and to the person applying it. It is one of the few places in decorating where the programme has to follow the material rather than the other way round.

What to record so the next scheme is easier

Which primer went on which surface, what the existing coating was found to be, what grade of lining paper was used, and which batch of finish. Nobody records any of it, and the next decorator pays for the omission, usually by discovering the same problem in the same place.

Where a surface carries a finish that cannot simply be overpainted, that fact belongs in the handover information in plain words. A future occupier will otherwise treat every painted surface as an ordinary one.
